The Ancient World we will study refers to the Middle East, North Africa and Western Europe. The course asks three broas questions: First, how can we find out about life and thought in the ancient world? Second, by asking how, to ask what was it like to liver during ancient times? And third, by finding out what it was like, to work out why they thought in this particulr way. A 15 week course cannot cover every detail of 3500 years of civilization, although we will be discussing the significance of individula figures and events. Rather this course compares and contrasts the culotures of different civilizations. To this end we will explore how humans created concepts or constructs of five major themes: Divinity, Cosmology, Humanity. Polity, and Creativity (see last page of syllabus).

    ACCESS PROGRAM

Students interested in the field of Late Antiquity may approach the field from a variety of angles, focusing on ancient or medieval history, with additional coursework in the departments of Classics Near Eastern Languages and Civilization Art History or the Comparative Religion Program . At least one graduate field course is offered each year, sometimes co-taught with faculty from other departments. Recent courses have included: "Introduction to the Historiography of Late Antiquity (150-750)"; "Jerusalem and the Holy Land in Late Antiquity"; "The Age of Justinian"; and "Heresy and Orthodoxy in the Early Church." Reading courses on Syriac literature and language, Sasanian history, and Anatolian archaeology can also be arranged.
To study Late Antiqutiy as their primary field, students should be prepared to learn at least two ancient languages (e.g. Greek, Latin, Syriac), as well as the requisite modern European languages (in most cases, French and German). Study of Late Antiquity as a secondary field requires only one ancient and one modern language. The range of possible topics for a secondary field in Late Antiquity is also much larger, ranging from Late Roman North Africa to the historiography and consequences of the early Islamic conquests.

'Haram-Yemen' offers a surprising look at women's lives and gender roles in contemporary Yemen. This astonishing film presents the affecting personal narratives of individual women struggling for self-determination, including Aisha, who defies both tribal law and her imposing father to sneak off to school and educate herself. When she is discovered, an entire village comes to her aid, convincing her father to drop his threats to kill her for the 'crime' of being educated. Aisha, now a doctor with her own NGO, is an inspiring model of resistance against tradition, and her family's experience suggests with profound poignancy that change is possible.
'Search for Freedom' traces the dramatic social and political history of Afghanistan from the 1920s to the present through the personal stories of four remarkable women. Stunning archival footage from the early 20th century captures a time of remarkable freedom for women that belies most Western perceptions. Other historical footage reveals women's realities and resilience under the near constant occupations, first by the Soviets, then the Mujahadeen and more recently under the repressive Taliban. Defying the image of Afghan women as mere victims, the film offers a nuanced portrait of women who find choices where none are offered and who continue to find hope in the face of exile and isolation.

    Near Eastern Languages and Civilization
229 Denny Near Eastern languages and civilization focuses on the languages and civilizations of the Near East with an emphasis on the ancient and medieval roots of these civilizations as well as more recent cultural developments. Each language offered represents a major literary tradition. Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Central Asian Turkic are the languages of the most significant literary manifestations of Islamic civilization. Hebrew and Aramaic are the languages of the Bible and are central to Judaism and Jewish culture. Egyptian languages (Coptic, Hieroglyphic) and other Mesopotamian and Mediterranean languages (Akkadian, Ugaritic, Phoenician) are important to the ancient and Christian cultures of the Near East. These languages are taught in conjunction with courses on the social, cultural, and religious history of the Near East, providing students with a broad understanding and solid foundation for more advanced studies or professional career development.
