Mythology of the Near East
The genre of Near Eastern mythology encompasses a rich history of myth and legend from a variety of ancient civilizations, including the Assyrian, Babylonian, Canaanite, and Hebrew traditions. For the purpose of this web page I chose to focus primarily on the intriguing myths of ancient Mesopotamia; however, the links at the end of the page provide a wealth of information about the literature, religious beliefs and history of various other cultural regions of the Near East.
Myths and Legends of Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia is a fertile, alluvial plain which lies between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in what is now modern day Iraq. Since 3000 BC, Mesopotamia has been the heartland of numerous civilizations throughout time. The ancient societies that flourished there were largely urban communities supported by agriculture and pastoralism. Two of the most prominent civilizations of Mesopotamia were Assyria which was in the north-east and Babylonia in the south.
Most of what we know about the peoples of these ancient lands we have learned from studying the vast collection of clay tablets that they left behind. On these tablets they recorded everything from the number of livestock a farmer owned to popular stories of the time. The telling and writing of stories and myths was an essential part of everyday life for the people of Mesopotamia. Stories were told as a means of entertainment in the courts of kings and as a way to pass the time during long caravan rides. It was the job of scribes, people who record stories in writing, to get the oral forms into written texts. These texts were often used for ritual and incantation. Many of the famous author/scribes were also priests. The tablets are written in Akkadian which is wedge-shaped (cuneiform) script.

Baal
In Biblical Canaan "on the hillsides are grown vines and lives, which, with natural pine and cedar forests in the Lebanon and Amanus, were the main products of the land. Moreover, soil which is eroded builds up fertile pockets of earth and even considerable plains. Such cultivable land was regarded as 'Baal's land', that is to say, land where cultivation depends on the activity of the god manifest in the autumn and winter rains. These rains are heralded by thunder, and 'the lord' (Baal) was known to the Canaanites by his proper name Hadad, 'the Thunderer', or Rimmon, which means the same. The term 'Baal-land' as distinct from irrigated land has survived down to the present day in Muslim law when making tax assessment for poor relief."
- John Gray, Near Eastern Mythology "Baal, one of the sons of El [the chief god of the Canaanites], was the executive god of the pantheon, the god of thunder and winter storms, the dynamic warrior god who champions the divine order against the menacing forces of chaos. He is also identified with vegetation and the seasonal fertility cycle. There is little evidence in the Ras Shamra texts of the sexual license, the sympathetic magic aspects of the cult to secure the productivity of Nature, that the Bible writers found so abhorrent. On the contrary there is ample evidence that some of the aspects of Yahweh reflected aspects of Baal as the Divine King, in the destruction of the sea-serpent Leviathan and the concept of everlasting kingly dominion; even some of the liturgical language is strikingly similar, like the wording of Psalm 68: 'To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, 'his strength in the clouds', and so on.

The Worship of Baal This bronze figurine of Baal reveals a haughty look, given to him by a Canaanite craftsmen. Baal the Life Giver
Baal (ba'al) was an ancient Canaanite and Mesopotamian deity associated with agriculture. He was believed to be the "giver of life" and mankind was dependant upon him for providing what was necessary to sustain the farms, flocks and herds. He was also called the "son of Dagon" (who was in control of the grain), and "Hadad" the storm god who would provide plentiful rains after hearing his voice (thunder). The Canaanites The land of Canaan was devoted to the worship of Baal. The Semitic word Baal means "lord" or "master" and the Canaanites believed that Baal was in absolute control over nature and over people. They believed that the only god who was superior to Baal was his father El, but Baal was the principal deity of the land. It was he who was in charge of the rain and the weather, and man's survival was dependent upon Baal's provision. "One may question that those ancient enemies of Israel were as evil as the Bible claims that they were, but even a superficial glance at Canaanite religion alone ably demonstrates their iniquity. Base sex worship was prevalent, and religious prostitution even commanded; human sacrifice was common; and it was a frequent practicein an effort to placate their godsto kill young children and bury them in the foundations of a house or public building at the time of construction: Joshua 6:26 "In his days did Hiel the Bethelite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn..."

Ancient Near Eastern Mythology
by Shalom L. Goldman
The ancient myths of the Near East are the foundation stones of both Western and Middle Eastern cultures. These stories originate in the period before the development of writing systems and tell how people made sense of the world through tales of gods, animals, men, women, and combined human/divine beings. These myths—among them the Epic of Gilgamesh , the Descent of Ishtar to the Netherworld, the Babylonian Creation Epic, the Tale of Innana—have great literary merit and reveal much about the development of historical writing and the evolution of religious systems.

Author : GWENDOLYN LEICK Edition : New ed Format : Paperback ISBN : Publisher : Publication Date (AUS) : January 1999 Pages : Imprint : Routledge Usually ships within 7 to 10 days Web Price AUD$66.00 Description Since the spectacular discovery of Nineveh 150 years ago, countless excavators have been searching for the lost civilizations of the ancient Near East. We now know the names of thousands of gods and goddesses, the words of hymns and litanies, the daily procedures of the Babylonian cult, as well as a growing number of mythological tales. A substantial number of the texts discussed in this volume originate from the archives of such ancient cities as Nineveh, Ur, Babylon and Hattusa. Through a collection of accessible entries, which provide sufficient detail and cross-referencing to be of use to the more specialist reader, Gwendolyn Leick has produced a scholarly guide to this complex and little-known world of ancient mythology. There is a wide-ranging bibliography which makes use of a particularly interesting and possibly unfamiliar collection of sources, and an extensive index for ease of reference.

Myths of the Gods
Many myths do not directly concern human beings, but focus rather on the activities of the gods in their own realm. In many mythologies the gods form a divine family, or pantheon (from the Greek pan, meaning “all,” and theos, “god”). The story of a power struggle within a pantheon is common to a large number of world mythologies—for example, the Babylonian Enuma elish centers on Marduk’s struggle for supremacy and his eventual victory over Tiamat. Greek mythology features a similar story of struggle between generations. In Greek mythology, the earliest gods were

This commentary was written by two very competent, knowledgeable scholars, a fact reflected in the quality of the comments. No doubt other scholars will get a new perspective or learn something that they were unaware of if they consult this book, but it was not written with the scholarly community in mind. As the fly-leaf notes, "Pastors, teachers, Sunday-school teachers, college and seminary students, and everyday readers of the Bible" are the target audience. It certainly will serve that audience well. Keith N. Schoville

While we shall closely consider what the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament can contribute to our knowledge of history of the Ancient Near East, and also consider the literary aspects of the individual biblical texts, neither the “Bible as History” nor the “Bible as Literature” will be the central focus in this course. Rather, we will focus upon the Bible as a religious document out of which emerged those basic theological concepts that decisively shaped western civilization. Our particular concern will therefore be biblical ideas about the nature of God, the relationship of the Deity to mankind, and the overall human condition.

We know from Egypt and Mesopotamia that it was common to seal important documentsincluding theological documentsin the masonry or foundations of a palace or temple in order to inform a future king who might undertake restoration of the building. What might the psalmist have had in mind when praising God for removing our transgressions "as far as the east is from the west" (Ps 103:12)? In an Egyptian hymn to Amun-Re, the deity is praised for his judgment of the guilty. As a result of the god's discernment the guilty are assigned to the east and the righteous to the west. What is meant by God "weighing the heart" (Prov 21:2)?
