Near-Death Experiences
[This is from the 1993 edition. For the latest version of this book order the Natural Death Handbook (4th ed).]
Accounts from past centuries
Throughout life, preparations are made for the various rites of passage, from weaning a baby, to preparing for retirement, by listening to the voices of those who have already passed through those various stages. Yet the voices of those who may have undergone at least a temporary death are only now beginning to be taken seriously by mainstream society and mainstream science. This is despite the fact that the written descriptions of changes in consciousness during Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) have been available for centuries. The earliest English account comes from the Venerable Bede in the eighth century, who tells the story of a man who was thought to be dead:
An eighth century account
He came back to life and suddenly sat up - those weeping around the body were very upset and ran away. 'I was guided by a handsome man in a shining robe,' he said. 'When we reached the top of a wall, there was there a wide and pleasant meadow, with light flooding in that seemed brighter than daylight or the midday sun. I was very reluctant to leave, for I was enraptured by the place's pleasantness and beauty and by the company I saw there. From now on I must live in a completely different way.' He later left all his wordly responsibilities and entered the Melrose monastery.

Stories from patients, other medical professionals and personal experience round out the sample from which this information on near-death experiencers have been taken. Methodology Dr. Morse uses personal experiences that have been reported to him by patients, as well as reports by other medical professionals to provide him with the research tools that he uses to write this book. He suggests too, that because these stories have been reported to him and he has a biased belief in the near-death experiences that are reported to him in this book, that this may give the material a “bent” toward his beliefs. Abstract In this book, Dr. Morse reports on experiences considered by some to be “mystical” in nature. He reports on dreams that patients have had that have foretold their deaths to themselves and family. He tells of near-death experiences where the experiencer actually meets long-ago-deceased family members and then come back with verifiable detail to support their case. He also reports on cases of SIDS and how, often, the mother or father will have a “feeling” or “dream” that tells them that the infant is going to die even before it happens. Most importantly, Dr. Morse presents ways to make the end of a loved-ones life full of dignity and love rather than full of doubt and shame. The chapters covered in the book include:

SUMMARY: Elaborating themes first introduced in Kaballah and Criticism Agon , and The American Religion: The Emergence of the Post-Christian Nation , this "spiritual autobiography" explains Bloom's own religious identity as a Gnostic. The book traces the history of " Gnosis , or knowledge of the God within" from its roots in Zoroaster through its early developments in Christian Gnosticism, Jewish Kabbalism, and Muslim Shi'ite Sufism and then into modern expressions in imaginative literature. The books is organized by Bloom's argument that today's popular obsessions with angels prophetic dreams , and "near-death" transcendence as omens of the millennium are actually debasements of ancient Gnostic images. His discussion of primary Gnostic texts restores these images to their ancient meanings and rescues their original spirituality from both New Age commercialization and orthodox rationalization.

Science and Religion: Near-Death Experiences and Belief in the Afterlife April 16, 1992 INTRODUCTION Belief in an afterlife has been with us for centuries. The Egyptians made elaborate preparations for the journey of the dead to the afterlife. The Tibetan’s have their Book of the Dead which gives instructions and guides one through the perils encountered on the journey from death to new life. Christian’s may believe in a life in Heaven or Hell after death. Some Buddhists believe in a life after death in the Pure Land of Amida Buddha. In fact most cosmologies throughout the ages have had some belief in an afterlife. This paper reviews beliefs regarding the time after death and proposes that near death experiences may be a way to scientifically study and validate a belief in life after death. We begin by looking at what happens at death. Davis (1989) presents four possible answers to that question. He defends the resurrection model where the physical body dies, but is later raised form the dead by God to live again (pp.viii-ix). Kelsey (1982) presents data in support of a belief in the afterlife from various sources such as Swedenborg and other persons with near- death experiences including Carl Jung. Russell and Nielsen present the belief that there is no God, therefore no afterlife. From here we go to the actual accounts and research of near- death experiences. First Kenneth Ring (1980) validates Raymond Moody’s (1975) original reports of NDEs with a focus on the core experience, religiousness of the subject, and the changes that occur after the NDE. Gibbs (1985) then evaluates recent research by Ring and Sabom to support Moody’s interpretation that NDEs represent a separation of the mind from the body at death rather than Siegel’s assertion that NDEs are a dissociative hallucination (pp. 72-78). Next C-reyson presents a psychodynamic explanation of NDEs that may be heuristically valuable in prompting more research.

Near Death Experiences: Dying to Live
Gordon Jacobs Those readers of Outlook with only a little knowledge of Swedenborg will have been made aware, especially in recent issues, that he wrote comprehensively on angels and life in the spiritual world. But it is quite likely that some will have doubts about his claim to write about another world from experience; some, perhaps, will be keeping an open mind on it. It is not uncommon, even for those who have studied Swedenborg's writings for some time, to have difficulty in accepting this claim, despite the discovery that what he maintains are otherworldly experiences are all so logical. Many who are strongly attracted to his comprehensive teaching on religion and various aspects of Christianity find this claim of his a stumbling-block. As regards material evidence that he did have extraordinary psychic gifts, there are several well-authenticated cases. One of the most well-known was his detailed report of a fire in Stockholm whilst in the company of fifteen people, although he was three hundred miles away in Goteburg. As this occurred in 1759, before rapid communication was possible, it was some days later before a messenger arrived with full particulars which tallied in every respect with Swedenborg's own account, even to the exact time that it had been extinguished.

Associate Professor, Religious Studies,College of Charleston, Charleston, SC ( IrwinL@CofcC.Edu In an earlier work ( The American Religion Bloom gives an ideosyncratic history of gnosticism preceding its American incarnation, tracking from ancient Egypt through Zoroastrianism to Greek and Hebrew religious thinking, synthesized in early "gnostic" Christianity, and spun out in the classic Hermetic texts, strongly influencing Greek Neoplatonism, Merakabah mysticism, and Iranian Sufism. These currently were then turbulently united in Renaissance revivalism and passed on through European ecstatic preachers and esotericists to America. He focuses on Zoroastrian dualism as the prophetic origin of all later Euro- Bloom then tackles angels, first by dismissing much of what is written as superficial, holding up Milton's Satan as a great as primal sources of revelatory, prophetic dreams imaged as "the man or woman of all light" (p. 122). Freud's bondage to the past, to childhood and trauma, is overturned in the gnostic paradigm to a visionary future of cosmological growth and development, a turn that Bloom sees as a liberation of the spiritual imagination.

A Spiritual Approach to Out-Of-Body Experience
This site introduces the concept of spiritual travel . Spiritual travel is a form of out-of-body experience done voluntarily to achieve a spiritual goal. In order to have an out-of-body experience, the soul or consciousness of the individual must temporarily leave the physical body. During out-of-body experience, the physical senses shut down. When this occurs, an entirely new world opens up to the individual. Spiritual travel is a special type of out-of-body experience where the individual's awareness is heightened, and he or she is able to make decisions and direct the experience. The spectrum of experience afforded by spiritual travel is very broad and can include a wide variety of psychic and spiritual states. In most cases, the spiritual traveler is able to clearly remember the experiences and learn from them. Spiritual travel is sometimes called transcendent or ecstatic experience because it deals with the "inner" senses rather than the physical senses. It also deals with states of being seemingly independent of the physical world. The Purpose of Spiritual Travel The goal of spiritual travel is mystical or transcendent religious experience. The reason for an interest in spiritual travel is that it provides a unique means of approaching these distant and extraordinary states of religious awareness. It does this by exposing the spiritual seeker to a series of lessons about the nature of identity, and the freedom of the soul to travel in various non-physical environments. These lessons gradually introduce the spiritual traveler to a variety of psychic and spiritual states containing increasing degrees of individual freedom, and spiritual awareness. In addition, spiritual travel provides an inner laboratory where the seeker can experiment with techniques and methods of moving through the more limited psychic states of awareness and into these distant spiritual realms.

"Western" in this case includes Christian, Jewish, and Islamic mysticism, as well as non-religious mysticism from sources in modern Europea and North America. I have not included links to the extensive resources on non-Western traditions of mysticism. This is mostly because the course that this page is a resource for is limited to Western mysticism. It also reflects my own lack of experience with non-Western mysticism. In no way does it suggest that Western mysticism is somehow better, more worthy of study, or anything like that.
