Introduction
"...There is rebirth of character, but no transmigration of a self. Thy thought-forms reappear, but there is no ego-entity transferred. The stanza uttered by a teacher is reborn in the scholar who repeats the words.
Only through ignorance and delusion do men indulge in the dream that their souls are separate and self-existent entities. Thy heart, O Brahman, is cleaving still to self; thou art anxious about heaven but thou seekest the pleasures of self in heaven, and thus thou canst not see the bliss of truth and the immortality of truth." Strange Encounters:
Near-Death Experiences and Birth Memories By John A. Speyrer
O n one day in the summer of 1994, my mailbox contained notices of two interesting upcoming conferences. One will be better known to readers of this newsletter than the other. That notice concerned the International Primal Association's convention which began at the end of August of that year. The second conference was to be held in Seattle during the month of June and was sponsored by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), who are publishers of the Skeptical Inquirer magazine. The conference theme was "The Psychology of Belief.'' This was an apt theme since discussions were planned on various topics including, Alien Abductions, The Reliability of Memory, Conspiracy Theories and A History of UFOs. If the past conferences are any guide, the convention participants will spend their time critically and skeptically analyzing these subjects. It would have been more rewarding if the committee, in studying how belief systems are formed and how memory cannot be relied upon, would also have examined what possible commonalties exist between the UFO abduction experience and another experience which all of us have undergone at our beginnings Astronomer Carl Sagan gave the keynote address at the CSICOP conference last year. To avoid possible embarrassment, I am sure that no mention was made that Sagan had earlier proposed a theory to explain another bugaboo of the committee, the near-death experience. Dr. Sagan presented his theory in a book on neurology which he entitled

The mystical experience is a transient, extraordinary experience marked by feelings of being in unity, harmonious relationship to the divine and everything in existence, as well as euphoric feelings, noesis, loss of ego functioning, alterations in time and space perception, and the sense of lacking control over the event.
Incidence of Mystical Experiences
Numerous studies assessing the incidence of mystical experience (Back and Bourque, 1970; Greeley, 1974, 1987; Hay and Morisy, 1978; Hood, 1974, 1975, 1977; Thomas and Cooper, 1980) all support the conclusion that 30-40% of the population do have such experiences, suggesting that they are normal rather than pathological phenomena. In addition, a recent survey (Allman et al., 1992) has demonstrated that the number of patients who bring mystical experiences into treatment is not insignificant. Psychologists in full-time practice were asked to estimate the percentage of their clients over the past 12 months who had reported a mystical experience. The 285 respondents indicated that of the 20,670 clients seen during the past year, the incidence of mystical experience was 4.5%. This clearly challenges the GAP report on Mysticism, which claims that "mystical experiences are rarely observed in psychotherapeutic practice" (Group for Advancement of Psychiatry, 1976, p. 799).

Out of Body and Near Death Experiences Given By Paula Thomas, D.D. and Dr. Lee Warren Plim Report
Introduction Paula Thomas and Penny Warren co-lectured a session on out-of-body experiences (OBE) and near-death experiences (NDE). They explored the possibility of consciousness existing separate from the body by reports from people who attained an out-of-body state. In spite of the fact that all cultures’ history, myth, anthropology, and religion have reported this universal occurrence, scientists have not been able to provide proof of these incidences. Researchers wondered whether they could demonstrate that man has a soul and that a realm exists for souls to reside after they leave the physical body. Prior to the advent of medical technology’s ability to resuscitate people on the verge of death, OBE appeared historically in non-scientific literature. (See p. 13, “Does the Bible mention OBE?” In “Is Spirit Calling Modern Man to an Inner Journey?”

ABSTRACT:
The recent scientific concept of "dark matter" suggests that we should seriously reconsider the timeless mystical perception of the physical universe. This paper will show that the traditional physical description provided by mystics for subtle bodies and subtle matter would today be categorized as "dark matter," and that by taking these mystical concepts literally we can utilize this excellent mystical model as a physical basis for the understanding of numerous mystical and psychic phenomena.
INTRODUCTION
Serious scientific investigations have been put forth in an effort to study phenomena such as subtle energies (qi or prana), psychic healing, clairvoyance, hands on healing, healing through prayer, near-death experiences, and out-of-body experiences to name a few. The accumulating scientific evidence has generated various models in an effort to account for each phenomenon independently. However, these modern scientists have overlooked the traditional comprehensive physical explanation which mysticism has provided for these and other related phenomena. Traditional mystical teachings assert that the creation of the universe is divided into several major planes of matter or consciousness, and that man, in addition to his visible body, has interpenetrating subtle bodies which are made up from each of these planes of matter. Most, if not all, of the spiritual writings and teachings that have emerged from every culture contain this concept.

A Glimpse of Death
By Jean B. Crabbendam When Dr. Raymond Moody wrote Life After Life in 1974 and coined the term near-death experience (NDE), most people had never heard of such a thing. The author was amazed by the worldwide public response to his book and the discovery of thousands who claimed to have had such experiences. The subject was taken up and popularized by the media, and there is now an active International Association of Near-Death Studies. Among Moody's readers was a young pediatrician, Melvin Morse, who later cared for a young drowning victim. He feared she would either die or suffer brain damage, but after days in a coma she awakened, bright as a button, and told him where she had been and what she had seen. Intrigued, the doctor began a serious study of NDE that has continued for a decade. He decided to record NDEs of children since it had never been done and he had access to documents listing youngsters who had undergone near-fatalities. His best-selling Closer to the Light (1990) recorded the results and, like Moody, he was astonished by the volume of letters and interview requests that poured in.

Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey
co-authored with Dr. Jane Goodall
(Warner Books, 1999) Jane Goodall's destiny has been blessed with faith, resolve and purpose. From a toddler entranced by all living things and a little girl inspired by Tarzan and The Jungle Book , she became the woman who, through a "chance meeting," landed a job with famed paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey, accomplished scientific breakthroughs in Gombe, and ultimately became a champion of the environment.
The journey has not been without its crises: She endured the horrors of the Blitzkrieg and World War II, postwar hardships, vicious rumors and "establishment" assaults on the integrity of her work, a terrorist attack and hostage-taking at Gombe, and her husband's slow, agonizing death. But throughout, her religious convictions, although tested, have helped her survive - and Jane Goodall's pursuit of science has enhanced, not eroded, her belief in the Divine.
In this book, co-authored with Phillip Berman, she candidly shares her life - talking of the love and support of her mother, her son, her late husband, of friends and strangers - as well as the Gombe chimpanzees she introduced to the world nearly forty years ago. And she gives us convincing reasons why we can and must open ourselves to the "saints within our souls."

Despite the incredible nature of this belief and a lack of credible supportive evidence, a cult has grown up around it.
