Home Comics Robots Humans ... Account US Navy ROV to Help Trapped Russian Sub Posted 5 Aug 2005 at 09:42 CDT by steve A Russian AS-28 mini-sub with a 7 man crew is trapped on the sea floor 200 meters below the surface after becoming entangled in an abandoned fishing net. The vessel carries only enough air for 24 hours. Japanese rescue ships are on the way but aren't expected to arrive in time. Russia has asked for help from the US Navy's Deep Submergence Unit which will attempt to air lift in the Super Scorpio ROV on an Air Force C-5 in time to free the sub from the net and save the crew. The Super Scorpio robot can reach depths of 5,000 feet and includes a cable cutter that cuts up to 1 inch steel cable. The ROV also includes two manipulator arms capable of lifting 250lbs. The NavSource Submarine Photo Gallery includes several photos of the Super Scorpio ROV . For updates on the story, see Google news
Update , posted 6 Aug 2005 at 09:15 CDT by steve (Master)
As of 9am central time the sub is still stuck. The Russians have managegd to attach lines to the sub and drag it about 60 towards shore but it's still too deep. A Russian ROV has obtained video and it turns out the sub is not caught in a fishing net but on antenna cabling that's part of Russia's coastal monitoring system. A second Super Scorpio ROV was sent from the UK and arrived a couple of hours ahead of the US Super Scorpio. Both ROVs have arrived and were being offloaded to ships at the last report. There are several conflicting reports from the Russians on how much air is left in the mini-sub.

With aircraft carriers deployed all over the world, equipment repair and maintenance can be a huge challenge. Creating a TeleMaintenance service using Microsoft® NetMeeting®, provides real-time multimedia communications to enable the U.S. Navy’s Shore Support Infrastructure to resolve more repairs without having to send for a “tech assist.” It also better prepares the technicians that do have to travel to the deployed ship to repair the problem. This saves time and travel and labor costs, and reduces downtime. Solution Overview
Profile

The U.S. Navy operates more than 300 ships all over the world, including a fleet of 12 aircraft carriers. Situation
The Navy has been downsizing for the last several years while maintaining the same high degree of readiness to respond to a crisis anywhere in the world. Because it has a limited number of technicians and engineers to respond to technical problems that occur all around the world, it needed a way to maximize its existing technical personnel. Solution
Benefits

The TeleMaintenance system saves the travel costs and time required for technical experts to go to the ship, minimizes downtime, and increases the number of repairs that can be handled by the technicians aboard the ship.

RIAA orders US Navy to surrender
By Andrew Orlowski in San Francisco Published Sunday 24th November 2002 22:44 GMT In a timely reminder of who's really in charge here, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has mounted a daring raid on the US Navy. Acting unilaterally at the behest of the RIAA, Navy officials confiscated 100 computers on suspicion of harboring illegally downloaded MP3s, The Capital , an Annapolis, MD daily reports. A Naval official quoted confirms the raid, adding that punishment ranges from "court martial to loss of leave and other restrictions". For the RIAA, there are no half measures: you're either with them, or against them. So even if you're risking having your ass blown off for your country, there's no mercy.

ONR Summer Faculty Research Program and Sabbatical Leave Program The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors the Summer Faculty Research Program and the Sabbatical Leave Program for U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who hold teaching or research appointments at U.S. colleges and universities. These programs provide an opportunity for faculty members to participate in research of mutual interest to the faculty member and professional peers at U.S. Navy Laboratories. The Summer Faculty Research Program is a 10-week program, beginning in May 2006. There are three levels of appointment: Summer Faculty Fellow, Senior Summer Faculty Fellow, and Distinguished Summer Faculty Fellow. Stipends range from $1,400 to $1,900 per week for the summer program. Each fellow will be reimbursed for expenses incurred on an optional pre-program visit to the sponsoring laboratory and one round-trip encompassing travel to the sponsoring laboratory at the beginning of the program and travel back to their home residence at the end of the program. Relocation assistance is provided to qualifying participants. At the discretion of the Navy lab, fellows may be allowed to bring a student (undergraduate or graduate) to the lab to assist with the summer research. The studnets' stipends will be comparable to those in the NREIP Program.

    Abstract
Though an enduring fiscal crisis imperils the future of all U.S. Navy libraries, one small, but dynamic project demonstrates the resilience of library scientistseven when they are confronted with the specter of library closings. In the post-cold war era of reduced defense budgets, there are fewer Navy libraries available to support the missions of geographically distributed users. Since 1991, the number of special Navy librariesmedical and academichas declined by 25%. This number could be headed for an even steeper decline. Call it consolidation, realignment, or right-sizing, the result is that most sailors, marines, and federal workers are no longer within a lunch-time commute of professional library services and a locally-developed collection. Yet, the Navy's voracious appetite for information continues to grow, particularly for technically-oriented reports, journals, and publications. While this article will examine the underlying technologies, including the middleware that parses user queries and monitors user activity (statefulness), it is the emerging library business process model, its implications, and potential scalability that the authors find most provocative.

    Sudhir Chadda
Mar. 12, 2005 The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is on the move in Atlantic Ocean and is possibly headed towards the Mediterranean Sea. The convergence of three carrier groups in the corridor of the Middle East will send very strong message to the Syrians and Iranians. There are indications that soon US is moving two more aircraft carrier battle groups to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. This will spell a formidable strike force for Iran and Syria who are in defiance on issues of Lebanon and Nuclear weapons development. Outbound from Singapore, the USS Carl Vinson is currently crossing the Indian Ocean headed towards Middle-East. This will be the first time since February 2004 that US will have three major carrier groups stationed on and around Middle East. Each of these carrier groups carry nearly 85 aircrafts and is capable of deliver precision-guided munitions. In addition there are anti-submarine aircrafts, airborne-early-warning and rotary-wing aircrafts. Because in the air refueling capabilities these aircrafts can operate from a long distance. The carrier groups are independent and can operate indefinitely.
