National Indian Education Association. The National Indian Education Association held its annual conference in Billings, Montana in October 2001. USGS participation included a booth, staffed by employees from the EROS Data Center and the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center. For the first time, USGS Rocky Mountain Mapping Center staff presented a workshop on using geographic information systems technology in the classroom, showing how this technique can make a variety of subjects, including history, geography, economics, and science, more relevant to Native students. NOAA and the USGS, through its support of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), presented an annual training session on GIS/metadata and coastal issues for American Indians at the NOAA Coastal Services Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Topics included the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, water quality, and flora and fauna monitoring. The training session helped assure Tribal investment in data collection and maintenance and provided Tribal access to public data catalogs and clearinghouses. Native Americans
in World War II
by Thomas D. Morgan
[Excerpted from Army History: The Professional Bulletin of Army History , No. 35 (Fall 1995), pp. 22-27]
In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, "This generation has a rendezvous with destiny." When Roosevelt said that he had no idea of how much World War II would make his prophecy ring true. More than fifty years later, Americans are remembering the sacrifices of that generation, which took up arms in defense of the nation. Part of that generation was a neglected minority, Native American Indians, who flocked to the colors in defense of their country. No group that participated in World War II made a greater per capita contribution, and no group was changed more by the war. As part of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of World WarII, it is fitting forthe nation to recall the contributions of its own "first citizens." The Vanishing American At the time of Christopher Columbus ' arrival in the New World, the Native American population living in what is now the United States was estimated at about one million. By 1880, only 250,000 Indians remained and this gave rise to the "Vanishing American" theory. By 1940, this population had risen to about 350,000. During World War II more than 44,000 Native Americans saw military service. They served on all fronts in the conflict and were honored by receiving numerous Purple Hearts, Air Medals, Distinguished Flying Crosses, Bronze Stars, SilverStars, Distinguished Service Crosses, and three Congressional Medals of Honor. Indian participation in World War II was so extensive that it later became part of American folklore and popular culture.

Pottery Zuni Fetishes Storytellers Sandpaintings ... News
In the Best of New Mexico issue of the Crosswinds Weekly , the Penfield Gallery of Indian Arts was named one of the Best Reasons for Locals to Spend Time in Old Town , especially for the huge fetish collection. The Penfield Gallery has hundreds of Zuni fetishes carved by the best artists from Zuni Pueblo available in their Albuquerque store. A considerable number of these can be seen on this website, the most extensive selection of Zuni fetishes available on the Internet. The gallery carries pottery made by the artists of the New Mexico Pueblos, as well as those of Hopi and the Navajo Nation. There is a large collection of miniature pottery, especially from Acoma and Santa Clara Pueblos, as well as the more traditional forms. The Navajo rugs carried by the gallery are all hand-woven, many of hand-spun wool, and come mainly from the western part of the Navajo Nation. A specialty is sandpainting rugs from the Shiprock area. Navajo sandpaintings are also found here, with large and highly detailed sandpaintings being available. A large selection of Pueblo storytellers is carried, including pottery masks. Navajo folk art and Zuni beaded figures are also available. We have recently added the gourd art of two non-Native artists, Robert Rivera and Tony McGregor. For over 100 years the Penfield Company has been a tradition in New Mexico, carrying only the finest Native American arts and crafts. Since 1975 they have been located in Albuquerque's Old Town on South Plaza. We invite you to browse through our online display. Orders may be placed by email or telephone. If you are in the Albuquerque area, we invite you to visit our gallery on South Plaza in Old Town. We also have a

Native American Legends, Myths and Lore
December 19, 2002 " In ages past, our old ones were the storytellers. This was the way things were passed along to the generations that followed. For this reason the aged people made it a point to remember every detail so they could relate it at a later time. They were the word and picture carriers making history and spirtual values alive and important. In recent times we have made our old ones think they are not so important. We spoof their stories and make them feel foolish. The truth is that we are ignorant of what is precious and how to 'a da li he li tse di appreciate age. Rigidity can creep in and set even the young mind if there are no soft memories, no laughter, no times too deep for tears. Age is grace a time too valuable to waste."

Radio Cornplanter Chronicles by Harold Thomas Beck Cornplanter Chronicles is a story unlike any other story about a Native American nation and its war chief. The Seneca, a member of the Iroquois League of Six Nations, is the only tribe to survive intact to this day on their ancestral land. They are the only tribe in the United States that was never defeated by American armies and forced to accept the white man's terms. They fought on the losing side several times (The French against the British in the French and Indian War, and the British against the United States in the Revolutionary War), but in each case the war was lost elsewhere and they fought on. When it finally came in 1791, it was Cornplanter, head chief of the Seneca, who negotiated the terms and brought peace to the Alleghenies.

The history of Navajo rugs Manufactured Southwestern rugs and Native American blanket designs began to replace true Native American Indian rugs and blankets around the turn of the century. Indeed, prior to 1900, it could be said that Native American Indians did not weave rugs, but wove blankets exclusively. The shift from Navajo blankets to rugs was necessitated by the times and facilitated by the traders. Because the native market for Native American blankets was disappearing, trading posts began to encourage Navajo rugs from the weavers; a heavier product than the Native American Blanket incorporating popular designs among Eastern tourists, No Indian trading post or Indian lodge was complete without a sprawling Southwestern area rug on the floor as part of its Southwestern decor.
