    Early history
The first Nauruans were Polynesian and Melanesian explorers. In 1798 John Fearn, a British captain of the whaling ship 'Hunter', became the first European to land on the island, naming it Pleasant Island. Nauru had little contact with the outside world until whaling ships and other traders began to visit in the 1830s. The whole island was governed by kings. When the Europeans, especially the Germans, came to Nauru, a local chieftain called Auweyida was the king of the land. He kept to be Nauru's king, although the Europeans took over-hand. edit
    European control
In the nineteenth century the first Europeans came to Nauru. Many Nauruans blame the Europeans for breaking up the social structure of the island with its traditional 12 tribes. A ten-year internal war reduced the population from 1400 to 900.
The 1886 Anglo-German Convention led to the annexation of Nauru by Germany in 1888. In around 1899, the massive phosphate resources on the island were discovered. Beginning in 1906, the Pacific Phosphate Company started exploitation of the rock.

    http://www.wetlands.org/inventory&/OceaniaDir/Nauru.htm
A Directory of Wetlands in Oceania NAURU Area: Published figures range from 20.7 to 21.3 sq.km. Population: The climate is tropical with daily temperatures ranging between 24.4°C and 33.9°C, and average humidity between 70 and 80%. The average annual temperature is 27°C, with a seasonal variation of 1°C. Annual rainfall averages about 2,000 mm, much of it occurring during the monsoon season from November to February. However, the annual rainfall is subject to wide fluctuations, ranging from as little as 104 mm to over 4,572 mm. Droughts are not uncommon, and several lasting more than 12 months have occurred this century. Streams are non-existent. The tidal range is about 2.0 m. Nauru was under German administration from the 1880s until 1914, and then under Australian administration (on behalf of Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.) until the 1960s. In 1966, the Nauruans were given self government, and in January 1968, full independence was achieved. Indigenous Nauruans, of mixed Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian descent, make up about 60% of the population, the rest being a mixture of Australians, New Zealanders, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders. There is no capital city as such, although Aiwo and Yaren Districts contain the bulk of the island's governmental and commercial structures. The inhabitants live in small settlements scattered throughout the island, but mostly in the coastal belt. Nauru's economy is based mainly on the phosphate mining industry. Except for interruptions during World War I and World War II, the phosphate deposits have been mined continuously since 1906. Mining activities were taken over by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation in 1970, and the industry now produces in excess of two million metric tonnes per year. However, it is estimated that the phosphate deposits will be exhausted around the year 2000. The phosphate revenues bring the island one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. Since independence, over 60% of the revenue from phosphate exports has been invested in long-term trust funds, designed to provide the inhabitants with a future income when the phosphate deposits are exhausted. Agriculture is very limited, with a few fruit trees, coconuts

See also Australia Melanesia Polynesia , and Southeast Asia The twentieth century represents a tumultuous period of cultural, political, and artistic upheaval for the peoples of Micronesia. In 1900, Germany controls the vast majority of the region, including the Marshall, Caroline, and Northern Mariana Islands as well as Belau and Nauru. Britain holds a protectorate over Kiribati, which later becomes a formal colony, while the United States has political authority over Guam. The presence of larger numbers of Westerners and the continuing activities of Christian missionaries have an increasingly profound impact on many Micronesian cultural and artistic traditions Of all the cultural regions of the Pacific, Micronesia is the most severely impacted by World War II. Between 1941 and 1945, Allied and Japanese forces fight many of the major battles of the Pacific campaign on Micronesian islands. These include Tarawa in Kiribati, Chuuk (then known as Truk) in the Caroline Islands, Peleliu in Belau, and Saipan in the Mariana Islands. In 1945, the aircraft Enola Gay takes off from Tinian in the Marianas to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. After the Allied victory, control of Japan's Micronesian possessions is transferred to the United States, which administers them as a Trust Territory. In 1946, the U.S. begins the first in a series of nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands when it detonates an atomic bomb on Bikini Atoll. The testing program ends in 1958.

PM Pleads To Nauru: Take Our Aborigines Too
In the wake of Nauru's acceptance of the Tampa refugees, Australian Prime Minister John Howard has struck a new deal with the small island nation to take our Aborigines as well.
The Chaser The deal follows a recent poll which found that the majority of Australians don't think Aborigines should be allowed in Australia. Mr Howard however denied that he was playing politics when he ordered a military evacuation of the entire indigenous population. The Prime Minister said his government was committed to doing everything it could to stop Aborigines from stepping foot on Australian soil, even where the land is "technically" theirs. He said he thought the Nauru deal had struck the right balance between meeting the humanitarian needs of the Aborigines and the populist, electoral needs of the government. Opposition Leader Kim Beazley has supported the deal, to ensure the Labor Party doesn't itself disenchant the bigoted electorate in the lead-up to the federal poll. Both parties believe that Nauru, an island all but stripped bare by phosphate mining, will be a suitable home for our Aborigines, who are used to mines destroying their local environs.

    Nauru goes bankrupt
Remember Nauru ? That small Pacific island that got rich off phosphates? The BBC narrates: Nauru's rich reserves of phosphates - an ingredient for high-grade fertiliser - created enormous wealth during the 1970s and 1980s. The island's 10,000 inhabitants enjoyed one of the world's highest standards of living, as well as exemption from tax and immigrant labour to perform all menial jobs.

Joining up is hard to do
Professor Helen Hughes, a member of an Australian right-wing think tank who has previously suggested that Nauruans resolve their financial crisis by selling their country , has once again proposed that Nauru go out of business. In a report entitled "From Riches to Rags," Hughes argues that Nauru "should consider surrendering independence or adopting free association with either Australia, New Zealand or Fiji:" She proposes, among other things, that Nauru replace its parliament with an unpaid local government council, withdraw from all international organizations and ultimately consider association with a more prosperous Pacific nation. Thus far, Australia has refrained from adopting such a radical solution, preferring to assume partial control of Nauru's government while providing economic aid and helping restructure its debt. At this point, though, Australia is developing severe donor fatigue, and its sense of responsibility as Nauru's former colonial master is becoming attenuated. If a future Australian government cuts the purse strings, Nauru may yet have to choose between accepting a catastrophic decline in its living standard and becoming the first post-colonial nation to formally surrender its independence. In that event, the most obvious country for Nauru to associate with is Australia, with which it has a long association and which is already home to a significant Nauruan diaspora. It isn't clear, however, that Nauru would
