The inhabitants of Nauru wear the usual tropical clothes: short trousers and light shirts. Fishing still follows a traditional method: the island anglers wait in small light boats for fish to arrive. The custom of fishing has been preserved by trained Fregattvoegeln Radio Nauru has collected numerous recordings of local people's music. But even old Nauruans can rarely understand the contents of these songs. Whilst the traditional culture rapidly gives way to the contemporary, as elsewhere in Micronesia, music and dance still rank among the most popular art forms. Rhythmic singing and traditional reigen are performed particularly at celebrations and at Craftsmen make articles of clothing and fans of Kokosfasern and the sheets of the screw tree and use geometrical samples, which resemble those of the Indonesian culture. What’s Left for Nauru
URL: http://www.sprol.com/?p=213 The South Pacific island of Nauru has been strip mined for the past 100 years, leaving the remaining arable land subject to rising sea levels. The 13,000 inhabitants are now entirely dependent on imports and face an uncertain future. I first heard about Nauru in January of 2003 from an NPR article. Following the collapse of their telecommunications system, the Nauruans showed their anger with the government by burning the presidential house, rioting and looting. I like to think that this is an aberration in the Nauru culture. After all, “mountain people are wise, island people are happy.” But these islanders seemed distinctly unhappy. In a January 31 speech President Dowiyogo made an impassioned plea for help to the international community, but it was several weeks before anyone in the outside world heard the speech. Australia responded by sending two telephone technicians. Originally posted by Tricia Schmidt from Sprol: The Worst Places In The World , ReBlogged by Gavin on Aug 2, 2005 at 02:25 PM

Nauru
The Republic of Nauru, with a coastline of 30 kilometres, is an island situated north of the Solomon Islands and just south of the equator. The population is just 10,200 with the majority being Nauruan and the remainder being Asian and European. Nauruan is the main language, however English is widely spoken and understood. Nauru became an independent (and the world's smallest) Republic in 1968. The country's economy has traditionally been based on phosphate exports, although more recently tourism and the development of Nauru bas an offshore centre have become relatively more important. The Australian dollar is the currency of Nauru.

The Republic of Nauru (pronounced / n¦Ëˆuː.ɹuː /), formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island republic in the South Pacific Ocean . It is one of the world's smallest independent countries both in terms of population and land area and the smallest independent republic in both terms. It is also the smallest non-European country (in terms of land area). Much of its past prosperity derived from the large amount of phosphate deposits on the island, believed to be either of guano or of marine origin. Superphosphate is used as a fertilizer around the world in aerial topdressing and the majority of it has been exported to Australia . With the exhaustion of the phosphate supplies, Nauru faces an uncertain future. In the 1990s, it tried to gain new sources of income by introducing itself as a tax haven , but this story came to an end in July 2004. The clan was the traditional building block of Nauruan life, and today's electoral boundaries roughly represent traditional clan areas. Junk food is widespread, and diseases of affluence - diabetes, obesity and heart disease - are common. Most of the country's food has to be imported, so don't go expecting traditional Pacific feasts. The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. NAURU PICTURE GALLERY The island of Nauru is well known for the phosphate mining that took place there. Perhaps less well known are the Nauru people who have a very distinct and beautiful history, culture, customs, rituals and lifestyle. They were at one with their island and its surrounds. The images on this Web site are both historical and rare and show the people of Nauru as they existed before 1921. This was a time when their culture, customs and lifestyle had not been excessively disrupted by the phosphate mining and the brutal Japanese occupation during World War 2. This Web site is an important historical and anthropological statement about the Nauruan people.
