We focus on two main culture areas: The North West Coast Indians such as the Kwakiutl and Haida, and the Indians of the Plains such as the Lakota Sioux and the Cheyenne. The Native Peoples of North America have a history rich in legend and culture, which still survives today despite the actions of the US Government. A good place to start is First Americans a site created by US students. The Plains The Indians of the Plains are possibly the most well-known of all the culture areas because of the Hollywood movies. However not many people know that before the European invaders introduced the horse to North America, the Plains peoples lived in a settled, agricultural lifestyle.
Their nomadic lifestyle meant that they lived in temporary homes called tepees . You can read short history of the Sioux nation, the most well-known of the Plains tribes, and visit other nations such as the

Other groups came into the continent when the seas allowed, until the ancestors of the Inuit and Aleut groups, about 5000 years ago.
The peoples of the North Pacific Rim provided the source of native American groups. The ancestors of the Inuit and Aleut were more closely related to the Siberian Kamchatkans than they were to the Inca and Amazonians of South America.
Canadian Northwest coast groups went to sea for their food- salmon, whale and seal. The first nations of the plains hunted bison seasonally and moved frequently. The Inca knew nothing of tipis nor the Inuit of buffalo.
Natives of the Americas believe in a range of spirits - in human beings, other animals, plants and natural phenomena (such as thunder), all requiring respect to be paid to them. Contact with the spirit world is made by shamans or priests, through visions. They are also the healers, possessing detailed knowledge of medicines.
There was very infrequent contact with other continents until the Spanish arrived in central America in 1492CE. They introduced horses into the plains of North America and the greed for gold into Mexico and Peru. British and French contact began 100 years later on the east coast of North America, gradually spreading inland, while Russians and East Asians made contact in the far north.

Native American Indian art in the American southwest is dominated by the magnificent pottery and jewelry in the region. When it comes to the Pacific Northwest region which covers the states of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia (Canada) and the southern part of Alaska, the Native American art here is mostly wood carvings. This is not surprising since unlike the southwest desert, the Pacific Northwest is abundant with forests which have provided the wood as raw material for the region’s Native American Indian art. The wood carvings of the Pacific Northwest Native American art come in many different forms. The huge totem poles which are carved on entire tree trunks are probably the most famous. Certainly the most common form of contemporary Pacific Northwest Native American art is the plaque wood carving. The entire range of Pacific Northwest Native American Indian art subjects including eagles, ravens, thunderbirds, bears, killer whales and salmons are carved as plaques to be hung on the wall. A more complex project and usually higher priced would be the masks which are also carved out of wood. The Pacific Northwest Native American artists make some of the most striking aboriginal masks in the world.

    http://www.civilization.ca/aborig/stones/toys/tymenu.htm
Historically, games were an integral part of traditional Native culture. Some games were restricted to men, others to women, but a few were open to both men and women. The outdoor activities in which men engaged included running, wrestling, archery, hoop and stick, and lacrosse (eastern groups). Ball games such as "shinny" (a form of hockey) were mainly women's pastimes. For indoor amusement, games of chance, juggling, "cat's cradle" and the "ring and pin" game were popular among young and old. Toys were known from ancient times and served not only as amusement, but also as learning aids. Miniature tools, weapons and watercraft were used in role playing and to instruct in their construction. (IC)

Prologue to Period IV (1,000 B.C. to A.D. 500) B y 1,000 B.C. environmental conditions in Canada were similar to those encountered by European colonizers. Native populations in the country were well established in their various territories with their cultures, in most instances, being clearly derived from the preceding period. Diffusion of technology, cosmological beliefs, and other cultural systems was the major stimulus to cultural change. Much of this diffusion, however, was in the form of stimulus diffusion whereby a regional population not only adopted an innovation but modified it in order to accommodate their particular cultural needs, thus complicating the process of tracing diffusion routes.
