The policy was to "kill the Indian and keep the man." The aim of a boarding school system established by U.S.officials in the 19th century was to assimilate Native American children into the dominant White society, speakers told a panel discussion at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on May 12. That meant forbidding their languages, clothing, hair stylestheir culture, in factusing as much violence as was needed, they said.
And now they are demanding restitution on their own terms.

A linguistic family inhabiting the north portions of Washington, northern Idaho, western Montana, a small strip of the north west coast of Oregon, and in Canada the south east part of Vancouver Island from Thurlow Island to Sooke Bay, and all the south mainland of British Columbia as far as Bute inlet and Quesnelle Lake, with the exception of that portion held by the Kutenai, although within the Kutenai area, at the Columbia lakes, is a small settlement of Salish. An isolated division of the family, the Bellacoola, had established itself farther north on Dean inlet, Burke channel, and Bellacoola River. The name Salish was originally applied to a large tribe in west Montana popularly known as Flatheads, thence it was finally extended to cover all those speaking a similar language.

Indigenous People THE PEOPLE Inuit are a people who live near the Arctic. Their homeland stretches from the northeastern tip of Russia across Alaska and northern Canada to parts of Greenland. Inuit refers to the people formerly called Eskimos . The term Eskimo comes from a Native American word that may have meant 'eater of raw meat'. They prefer the name Inuit , which means 'the people' or 'real people' and comes from a language called Inuit-Inupiaq. The singular of Inuit is Inuk , which means 'person'. As the Inuit spread eastward, they modified their way of life to suit the Arctic environments they encountered. They caught fish and hunted seals, walruses and whales. On land, they hunted caribou, musk oxen, polar bear and other small animals. They used animal skins to make tents and clothes. They crafted tools and weapons from the animals' bones, antlers, horns and teeth. In summer, they traveled in boats covered with animal skin, called kayaks and in winter, on sleds pulled by

History
The Native Americans are widely believed to have come to the Americas via the prehistoric Bering Land Bridge . However, this is not the only theory. Some archaeologists believe that the migration consisted of seafaring tribes that moved along the coast, avoiding mountainous inland terrain and highly variable terrestrial ecosystems. Other researchers have postulated an original settlement by skilled navigators from Oceania , though these American Aborigine people are believed to be nearly extinct. Yet another theory claims an early crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by people originating in Europe . Many native peoples do not believe the migration theory at all. The creation stories of many tribes place the people in North America from the beginning of time. Mormon tradition holds that some Native Americans are descendants of the lost tribes of Israel Based on anthropological evidence, at least three distinct migrations

They prefer the name Inuit, which means 'the people' or 'real people' and comes from a language called Inuit-Inupiaq. Most Inuit lived in tents in the summer and in large sod houses during the winter. When traveling in search of game in winter, they built snowhouses.
    THE LAND
The Inuit live in one of the coldest and harshest regions of the world. Inuit lands include the northeastern tip of Siberia , the islands of the Bering Sea , and the coastal regions of mainland Alaska . They also include the north coast and islands of the Canadian Arctic and most of the west coast and part of the east coast of Greenland . The region is often called the Land of the Midnight Sun because at a certain point of the year the sun can be seen for twenty-four hours. At the North Pole, the sun never sets for six months from about March 20 to September 23. Around the Arctic Circle , however, such a period of uninterrupted sunlight lasts for only a few days around June 21.
