AMUNDSEN, ROALD

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer who was the first person to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible (May 11-13, 1926) and was the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen and his small expedition reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, traveling by dog sled. Amundsen was also the first person to sail around the world through the Northeast and Northwest passages, from the Atlantic to the Pacific (in 1905). He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. Amundsen died in a plane crash attempting to rescue his friend, the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile who was lost in an airship. For more information on Amundsen, click here ANZA, JUAN BAUTISTA DE
Captain Juan Bautista de Anza (1736-1788) was a Mexican-born trailblazer and explorer. He was the first person of European descent to establish an overland trail from Mexico to the northern Pacific coast of California (then called New Albion). He found a corridor through the desolate Sonoran Desert. His expeditions brought hundreds of settlers to California. He founded the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose. De Anza was the commander of the presidio at Tubac.

Spanish and English ships first reached the Northwest Coast from the south in the late 1500s. However, Europeans did not stake territorial claims in the area until the 1770s. In the Nootka Convention of 1790, Spain surrendered its land claims to Britain. Most early contacts between non-Indians and Indians were peaceful and fostered trade relations. The arrival of fur traders to the Northwest Coast in the late 1700s—first Russian, then British and American—initiated a period of extensive trade with indigenous peoples. The Russians, who explored the region from the north, established trading posts along the Gulf of Alaska. Contacts between Indians and non-Indians further increased with the U.S.-sponsored

Other descriptions of Native American language Native American languages are the indigenous languages of the Americas , spoken by Native Americans from Alaska and Greenland to the southern tip of South America . The Native American languages consist of dozens of distinct language families as well as many language isolates . Many proposals to group these into higher-level families have been made by some linguists, but several of these have not been generally accepted. The Americas (sometimes referred to as America) is the area including the land mass located between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, generally divided into North America and South America. ... Introduction
This page contains very brief biographies of some significant figures in US and Canadian history, plus a few entrepreneurs and current personalities. It also includes some well known fictional characters. I have not included figures such as television and film stars and politicians who are likely be well known to British and other foreign visitors. This list is obviously far from complete and ranges from the sublime to the, well, shall we say... rather less sublime. In most cases more detailed information on an individual person is readily available from a variety of sources such as encyclopedias. Where no dates are given, I have so far been unsuccessful in my attempts to discover them.

    Native Spirituality
Description Native spiritual traditions are passed down orally through generations. Although North American Indian traditions vary considerably across the continent, they still have much in common. Central to many cultures is a belief that the Great Spirit created the Earth and its people. Others believe that humans came from a sky-world, that the Earth is the Mother of all life, and that plants and animals have spirits that must be respected, honoured and cared for. It is a holistic concept of not only human life but also the life of the world and all things in it, both animate and inanimate, wherein all things are related and interconnected through a “circle of life.” The concept is reflected and explained by the shaman’s medicine wheel. The medicine wheel demonstrates how all life is interconnected and embarked on in a circular journey. The four cardinal directions, each of which has a guiding spirit and unique attributes, symbolize the stages of the life journey. The East, direction of the daily birth of the sun, represents a child’s birth and first few years of life. The South relates to childhood and intellectual growth. The West is symbolic of adulthood and introspection. And the North represents the elder phase of life and the spiritual aspects of it. The centre of the wheel is symbolic of Mother Earth and the Creator and their role in the beginning and continuation of life. Many North American Indian traditions revolve around spiritual and personal development, an understanding of the Great Spirit and Mother Earth, and an appreciation of the nature of life and surrounding environment. The rituals and ceremonies described in the following sections provide a broader base for understanding the means through which Native Spirituality is practised.

    The Surprising Silents
(Race in Contemporary American Cinema: Part 4)
    By Angela Aleiss
Cineaste v21, n3 (Summer, 1995):34 (2 pages). Every decade, Hollywood studios announce that they have 'reinvented' the Native American genre. Finally, studios say, Indians will be portrayed as accurately as possible; they will now play themselves in major roles and their non-Indian antagonists will be seen in a less than positive light. In short, the old saying that the only good Hollywood Indian is a dead Indian will no longer be valid. This line of reasoning contains several faulty assumptions. During the silent era, the many 'reforms' so grandly proclaimed by contemporary filmmakers were commonplace. Unfortunately, these silent Indian-theme films failed to change dominant cultural values, and they could not withstand the demand for the cowboy-and-Indian attacks by the late 1930s in Westerns like The Plainsman Texas Rangers (1937), and Stagecoach (1939). While numerous books have already discussed these silent films, many have not been readily available to scholars, much less the general public. Now that situation has dramatically changed. The Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress has recently identified more than two hundred fiction and nonfiction films with substantial Native American content.(*) This treasure trove allows us to rethink that early era and to speculate realistically on what later brought about more negative Indian images.
