Creation stories teach that Native Americans have been where they are since the world was created. It is also thought that First Americans migrated from Siberia over the Bering Strait about 14,000 years ago, or perhaps even earlier. The land bridge was dry ground for several thousand years before the sea level rose again and stopped migration. The hunters would have followed the migrating herds of large mammals as they moved south. As the glaciers melted, the First Americans spread to the North American coasts and across the entire continent. Native Americans adapted to the climates and terrains in which they lived and used whatever natural resources were available. The arrival of the Europeans in the 1500's began a change in the lives of the Indian people that continued through the next centuries. Sometimes the changes were good. The horses brought by the Spanish made bison hunting much easier and safer. But Vikings, Spanish, English and French explorers, colonists and missionaries spread diseases, made slaves of the people, forced relocations, claimed ownership of natural resources and land, and tried to stamp out the native cultures. Some of the Indian people survived, but not without making drastic changes in their life styles.

Native American Folktales Lesson Plan
Castlebooks has sold over one thousand lesson plans on
since 1998. Teachers from across North America, Europe, and Australia use our lesson plans everyday.
Name Price Native American Folktales The Native American Folktales Unit is a complete lesson guide for teachers. After an introduction to several aspects of Native American daily life, students read a folktale followed by a discussion of the structure, purpose and plot of the folktale.
Worksheets are provided with most of the answers given to familiarize students with the genre and the ideas.
Students then read a second folktale followed by the same exercises as the first, except only half of the answers are given. Students are given the opportunity to think carefully about the story and the plot and fill in the answers. All answers are provided at the end of the workbook.
In Part II, Students are guided through the process of writing their own folktale. After an initial discussion students answer multiple choice questions for the first sentence, the setting, who is the main character (etc. etc.) until they have outlined the basic structure of a folktale (following the examples they have just studied in the folktales presented).

Third Grade Social Science: Continuity and Change

Students in grade three learn more about our connections to the past and the ways in which particularly local, but also regional and national, government and traditions have developed and left their marks on current society, providing common memories. Emphasis is on the physical and cultural landscape of California, including the study of American Indians, the subsequent arrival of immigrants, and the impact they have had in forming the character of our contemporary society. Students describe the physical and human geography and use maps, tables, graphs, photographs, and charts to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context.

CEC is a consortium of teachers from 14 western states dedicated to improving the quality of education in the rural, western, United States, and particularly the quality of math and science Education. CEC uses Big Sky Telegraph as the hub of their telecommunications network that allows the participating teachers to stay in contact with their trainers and peers that they have met at the Workshops. Date: May 1994 Grade Level(s): Subject(s):
  • Interdisciplinary Social Studies/US History
Description: The Native American has for hundreds of years been stereotyped. To help children understand that what they see in movies and television is not always historically accurate, I teach this unit. Goal: The purpose to this unit and activities is to motivate and to make learning fun and interesting, while covering most subjects and concepts required by the district's curriculum. This unit can be taught at any time of the school year. I've done it in October and ending it at Thanksgiving, when the parents join us for a Thanksgiving dinner, and also in January and ending it at the end of February or the middle of March where we culminate it with a play for the parents, community and student body.

Slavery and Native Americans Lesson Plan: 1600-1865
By Tori Austin Overview Native American slavery is a topic that garners very little, if any, attention in history classrooms. Native American tribes, on a small scale, practiced some form of slavery. The circumstances for Native Americans in subjugation varied from tribe to tribe. Using the essay, Slavery and Native Americans in British North America and the United States: 1600 to 1865 , students will investigate this lesser known area of history. Students will be actively engaged in reading and processing the historical essay and will develop an electronic presentation related to the topic.
