Native American Myth and Legend
Web Quest by Claudia Z. Williamson Introduction:
Every animal, lake, and mountain have a story connected with them. Native American storytellers speak of times long ago when animals could talk, men could live in the stars, imaginary beings populated the air, the wind, thunder and cloud. Storytellers entertained the people and taught important lessons. The stories were passed from generation to generation linking the ancient ones to the people who live today. Often the stories explained some part of the natural world: how the raven came to have black feathers, how the stars of Big Dipper came to live in the sky. The history and traditions of each tribe were passed on in the stories told on cold winter nights long ago by a warm fire glowing, reflected, dancing in the wide eyes of children gathered around the old storyteller. Through the stories, the hearts of the people are linked forever.
The Task:
You will be using the computer to learn about Native American stories. By traveling the internet you will discover many tribes, their history, and culture as passed from generation to generation. Each of you will choose a Native American tribe and find out where they live. You can use the map in class which lists all of the tribes and shows where they live. You will find a story from the tribe of your choice and print it. Each student will create a booklet which contains the following items: 1. The name and location of the Native American tribe which

... Native American Native Californians General Northern Southern Missions ... Nevada There were hundreds of small tribes of Native Californians, with diverse cultures and languages. Most Native Californian tribes were decimated by disease and the stress of their virtual enslavement by the Spanish Missionaries. Later the Americans hunted down and exterminated many of the remaining tribes without mercy. Some were completely wiped out with little trace, such as the Esselen of Big Sur. Others survived adversity and remain active today, particularly some of the tribes in the Northwest coast. However, a great volume of detailed and accurate information on their culture, mythology and religion is available. This is thanks to pioneering anthropologists at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Many of these scholars were affiliated with the University of California.

Probably the most intelligent of birds, the raven is central to the mythology of Pacific Northwest coast Native Americans.
Known as "Raven", this spirit-being was a powerful, supernatural creator and trickster. To break the monotony of his day, Raven created the first people by coaxing them from a giant clamshell found on the beach. Because the people were helpless, he made for them the sun, moon, stars, salmon, and cedar.

The cedar that was used as the model for the framework of Rand Jack's 14K gold Raven Pendant came from the ancient Canyon Lake Creek Community Forest in northwest Washington, where the 1,000-year-old yellow cedar trees predate the Crusades.

This book is a wonderful introduction to the general mythologies of North America. After explaining the importance of Native American myths, Leeming and Page give a wonderful introduction to Native American culture, pointing out shared traits and beliefs (such as the earth-diver creation story) that can be found from Siberia and northern Eurasia to North America down through Central and South America. I found this book to be extremely easy to read and understand. Bobby Lake-Thom incorporated Native teachings and stories with Western Scientific theories. I especially found it interesting when he discussed right and left brain thinking and how it relates to comprehension of Native signs and symbols.
He provides us with valuable insite into the stories and legends of many tribes. He shows us how important our oral culture is and was

Wolf Legends and Mythology
Pro-Wolf One of the earliest and best known legends involving wolves is the story of Romulus and Remus, twin sons of a Vestal Virgin who were banished to the wilderness and, before their rescue, were raised by wolves. The most popular version was written in A.D. 70 by Plutarch. The story however, originated around the fourth century B.C. and details how the twins went on to become the legendary founders of ancient Rome. The photo at right, from The Wolf Almanac by Robert H. Busch, is of a statue at Musei Capitolini in Rome, Italy. It depicts Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf. Wolf mythology is filled with stories about wolves raising orphaned children. The earliest accounts are probably related to the wolf's early status as a symbol of fertility. The oldest recorded story, by Rousseau, is that of the German wolf-child of Hesse in 1344. In 1758 Linnaeus wrote about nine animal children, including ones raised by wolves, and classified them as Homo ferus It is interesting to note that most wolf-child stories originate after 1894, when Rudyard Kipling introduced the character of Mowgli, an Indian orphan raised by wolves, in The Jungle Book. The illustration at right, of Mowgli the wild wolf-child, is by Stuart Tresilian for the World Book Society and is taken from Robert H. Busch's
