  • Paper #050841 :: Taoism and Native American Religions - Buy and instantly download this paper now An analysis of the parallels between Taoism and Native American religious beliefs. 979 words, 8 sources, APA, $ 35.95 USD Paper Summary: This paper examines how, out of the three Chinese religions of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, the one religion that most closely relates to the Native American religions is unquestionably Taoism. It looks at how Taoism, sometimes referred to as "Naturism", involves observations of and attitudes toward the world of nature similar to the mannerisms and philosophical beliefs of most Native American religious ideology. It discusses how Taoism is also very involved with the Cosmos and Heaven and the manner in which it can be related to the world of nature. It also shows how Native American religious beliefs and Taoism are quite analogous when dealing with the ways in which they are polytheistic and several other religious aspects. From the Paper: "Native Americans also believe they should be directed by nature, but for a different reason. A "Vision Quest" is often completed by Native Americans who want to attain a special ability. Usually, a young person on a vision quest lives without food, sometimes without water, and with little possessions. This is done to make the person appear materially poor and spiritually humble before the spirits. This is very similar to the Taoist idea that when an infant comes into the world, it knows no craft and has no ambitions to live yet is cared for, fed, and clothed (Hopfe & Woodward 178). In much the same way, the Native Americans believe that the spirits of nature will assist them, guide them, feed them, and protect them in their journey through earthly existence."

Do non-Native Americans have a right to practice Native American religions? This question not only brings to light concerns regarding how much freedom a religion has concerning who it allows to practice it, but it also arises issues about the travesties inflicted upon the Native American people by the people who now wish to practice their religions. Should they be allowed to keep their religion to themselves, and only themselves, because it is the last bit of their culture that hasn't been stolen from them by the white man? Both sides of these issues have been more-or-less well represented in the assigned readings and, from these readings, we can see that there is no clear answer to questions. "True spiritual leaders do not make a profit from their teachings, whether it's through selling books, workshops, sweat lodges, or otherwise. Spiritual leaders teach the people because it is their responsibility to pass what they have learned from their elders to the younger generations. They do not charge for their services." (p. 44)

    American Indian Religious Freedom Act
The American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA), passed in 1978, clarifies U.S. policy pertaining to the protection of Native Americans' religious freedom. (In spite of its title, the law explicitly states that it includes "the traditional religions of the American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut, and Native Hawaiians.") The special nature of Native American religions has frequently resulted in conflicts between federal laws and policies and religious freedom. Some federal laws, such as those protecting wilderness areas or endangered species, have inadvertently given rise to problems such as denial of access to sacred sites or prohibitions on possession of animal-derived sacred objects by Native Americans. AIRFA acknowledged prior infringement on the right of freedom of religion for Native Americans. Furthermore, it stated in a clear, comprehensive, and consistent fashion the federal policy that laws passed for other purposes were not meant to restrict the rights of Native Americans. The act established a policy of protecting and preserving the inherent right of individual Native Americans to believe, express, and exercise their traditional religions. AIRFA is primarily a policy statement. Approximately half of the brief statute is devoted to congressional findings. Following those findings, the act makes a general policy statement regarding Native American religious freedom:

Native American Religions Some of the main obstacles to the understanding of Native American Religions includes the fact that accurate information concerning Native American Religion has not always been easy to come by, even for scholars. Much of our early information was provided by Christian missionaries who probably distorted picture they presented. They began with the presupposition that the Indians were heathens and nature worshipers. Also they assumed that there was a common Religion that focused on a great spirit. Another problem was the 19th century romantic notion of the "noble savage." This is the idea of that these people lived in a state of innocents and harmony with nature although this was not the case. There are also many different tribes. On the North West Coast there are the Tlingit and Haida tribes. On the West Coast you have the Nez Perce and Ute tribes. In the Southwest are the Hopi, Navajo and Apache Indians. On the Great Plains are the Sioux and Pmaha. In the Eastern woodlands there are Cree and Miami Iroquois. Finally, in the Southeast, are the Creek and Natchez Cerokee. In general, the Native American Religion includes a belief in a

    Course Perspective and Goals
In this course we will study the religious culture of Native Americans. While the focus is on the culture, we will also note the historical developments and changes within traditions over time. The indigenous people of North America inhabited this continent for millennia prior to the European invasion, beginning in the 16 th century. Native American thought, history, and religious beliefs are under-represented in surveys of American thought, history, and religion. This survey of North American Religious beliefs will begin by looking at the more adequately documented beliefs of Meso-Americans. Building on that foundation, we will compare and contrast their beliefs with those of other American Indians north of the Rio Grand River. We will only be able to sample a few of these religious traditions. However reduced in number from disease and conquest, there are still, as of March 2000, 556 tribes that the Bureau of Indian affairs recognizes as eligible for Federal funding and services. While this number does not include the many tribes who are not officially recognized by the U.S.

    Indexes
An index is a specialized database that organizes information about the locations of articles in journals/magazines, reports and newspapers; and book chapters, papers in conference proceedings, and book reviews. Indexes provide the complete bibliographic citation of an article, including the title of the article, author, name of the journal, volume number, the pages of the journal in which the article can be found, and a short summary, or abstract, of the article. Some indexes are in book form, and some are electronic databases. Some electronic databases do NOT provide the complete text of articles.

    Not Available Book Review:
The power of religion to preserve individual and group identity is perhaps nowhere more evident than among Native American peoples. In Becoming and Remaining a People , Howard Harrodshows how the oral traditions and ritual practices of Northern Plains Indians developed, how they were transformed at critical points in their history, and how they provided them with crucial means of establishing and maintaining theirrespective identities. This book offers a bold new interpretation of anthropological studies, demonstrating how religious traditions and ritual processes became sources of group and individual identity for many people. Harrodreconstructs the long religious development of two village peoples, the Mandans and the Hidatsas, describing how their oral traditions enabled them to reinterpret their experiences as circumstances changed. He then shows how these andother groups on the Northern Plains remained distinct peoples in the face of increased interactions with Euro-Americans, other Indians,.and the new religion of Christianity.
