The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international stylistic movement that turned everyday objects into artistic statements, valued hand-craftsmanship and rejected the industrial ideals of economy and profit. Inspired by an eclectic mix of English, Native American and Spanish arts and principles, the Movement promoted honesty, purity, simplicity of design and materials, and craftsmanship. At its peak between 1890 and 1920, the Movement influenced decorative arts, architecture, and book and textile design. "Advocates strongly believed that through handicraft, either by making it or living with it, people would attain and enjoy a better life, " said Curator Karen Blanchfield. INTRODUCTION We believe that the original inhabitants of North America arrived thousands of years ago. Many names have been used to describe these people. We will refer to them as Native Americans or Indians. During the last several hundred years, these Native Americans have suffered many hard times, often, unfortunately, when coming into contact with the "newly" arrived European Immigrants. As you explore the various activities included in this webquest, try to get a sense of where the Indians were in their beliefs, what caused differences in their lifestyles, how important the earth and nature were to them, and their interactions with other groups of people.
YOUR TASK
During your Native American study you will explore various areas of the Indian culture from the past.

Native American Art In Cyberspace Alex Traube, New Mexico CultureNet, USA Abstract Along the south side of the Palace of The Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, sit Native American artists and craftspeople who sell their handmade goods to tourists and locals almost every day of the year, rain or shine. The over 900 vendors represent forty-one tribes, pueblos, chapters and villages in New Mexico, the Navajo Nation, and some parts of Arizona. Each morning the Vendors Committee conducts a lottery to see who will occupy the eighty spaces available under the portal that day. The Vendors Committee creates and enforces rules for those who sell their work under the portal. The rules emphasize authenticity (a maker's mark is required on all goods), traditional materials (sterling silver is permitted; silver plate and commercial liquid silver is not), and handmade work made as generations of Indian artisans have made it. Because of space limitations, the distances that many of the vendors must drive to participate in the lottery for a space under the portal, and the vagaries of clientele and weather, the Portal Program has sought alternate venues to sell their goods.

One can find plenty of web sites which maintain a calendar of pow wows. The difficulty is that the job can be so overwhelming, since there is no central database, they must rely on organizers and participants to submit updated information. As a result, most listings are incomplete or outdated. By limiting this page to Maryland and Washington, DC, I hope to stay as current as possible by using a 12-month rolling www.BrokenClaw.com Maryland has no federally recognized tribes. Neither does the State of Maryland currently provide any such official designation. Nevertheless, there are several communities of indigenous people who maintain an identity, including the Piscataway, the Nause-Waiwash, the Lenape, and the Lumbee. These events are inter-tribal celebrations, intended to bring together all descendants of America's native people with those who wish to learn and share the experience. Incidentally, in March, 2002, the Maryland House of Representatives passed House Bill 342 which would provide for Maryland Indians to apply to the Commission on Indian Affairs for official state recognition. Although it passed the House by a majority of 128-7, Governor Glendenning vetoed the bill. He cited his concern that such provisions would open the door for Indian casinos within Maryland. 2005 Calendar Aug 26-28 Baltimore Pow-Wow

This use of lights and darks differs dramatically from the means by which artists had traditionally manipulated these elements to create seemingly three-dimensional forms on the picture plane. Dow and his students rejected the then accepted concept that painting and sculpture were of a higher level than the applied arts, such as ceramics, furniture, jewelry, and photography. Native American Art
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-243

Carol visits one of the country's most respected museums of Native American art, the Southwest Museum of Native American Art in Los Angeles, and gets a lesson in making authentic pottery and a Native American rattle.
We are taken through the four regions featured at the museum - Plains, Northwest, Southwest and California tribes - and we learn about the history and craft-making of the different nations and tribes. Four states - Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona - are also represented. Docents Rose Figueroa and Bobbie Molina narrate our tour. They discuss how the California indians specialized in baskets, while the New Mexican indians were known for their pottery.
In the Southwest Museum's garden, Rose Figueroa demonstrates how to make an Indian wedding pinch pot from clay:
  • Make a ball of clay.
