Native American Arts and Crafts
We get a lot of mail asking us to recommend websites where people can buy authentic American Indian arts and crafts. There are many imitations of Native American artwork out there, and it can be hard to tell the wheat from the chaff. It doesn't help that most Native American artists don't have websites, whereas every marketer of Chinese-made dreamcatcher knockoffs has at least twenty different URLs trying to sell their stuff.
So if you're looking for arts and crafts that were actually made by Native Americans, either because it's important to you to have the real thing or because you want to support native people with your purchase, here is our directory of American Indian artists whose work is available online. If you have a website of Native American art (traditional, contemporary, or mixed) to add to this list, let us know . We gladly advertise any individual native artist or native-owned art store here free of charge, provided that all arts and crafts were made by tribally recognized American Indian, Inuit, or First Nations artists.
Thank you for your interest in American Indian art!

American Indian Masks
Masks have been part of dance regalia and traditional ceremonies in many Indian tribes since ancient times. The most renowned native mask-makers were the Northwest Coast Indians, who carved elaborate cedar dance masks. The most impressive of these could be opened at a pivotal point in the story to reveal a second face carved within the first one. The Hopi and other Pueblo Indians carve and paint wooden kachina masks for their traditional dances the Iroquois create sacred "false face" masks from wood and cornhusks, the Navajo and Apache make leather masks for dancing, and the Cherokee would craft gourd masks for storytelling. Cherokee mask art has fallen into decline since the forced removal of the Cherokees to Oklahoma, where their traditional mask materials were not available, but some artists are working to revive the tradition Southwestern and Northwest Coast mask carving remain a vibrant part of contemporary native culture. Today most American Indian masks are used for dances, cultural drama, decoration, and as crafts for sale. The exception is Iroquois false faces, which are used only for internal religious ritual. The Iroquois consider it sacrilegious to sell, publicly display, or mimic a sacred false face mask, and they have been petitioning museums to return false faces from their exhibits. There is some debate among Iroquois traditionals about whether it is unacceptable to sell or display

Several years were required to select a location, design team and plan for the Center. The Center will be located on about 300 acres of land to be donated by the City of Oklahoma City at the intersections of I-35 and I-40 in downtown Oklahoma City with a target opening date of 2006. A master plan and conceptual design has been completed by an exceptional group of architects, designers and museum and exhibit specialists. This plan includes many aspects that reflect Native American culture and traditions of water, wind, fire and earth, the circle, sun cycles and places of gathering for social and sports events. Phases I and II are now complete. Phase I included the site selection process and overall feasibility study. Phase II included the program brief with Building Concepts and Master Plan.

Top 10 Things to Remember When Buying
    Native American Art
What should you buy? How do you know what's authentic? Which artists are most collectible? Visitors to the Heard Museum Shop and Bookstore frequently pose these and other questions when they're looking to buy Native American art. So, from the home office in Phoenix, Arizona, Heard Museum Shop Director Bruce McGee offers these tips. Number 10
Visit Museums. To find the best objects, go to the best places ... and where better to find the best-quality objects than in a museum? Places like the Heard Museum display thousands of exemplary objects ranging from historical to contemporary, traditional to avant garde. Number 9
Compare Styles. What makes the object you're considering desirable? When you're looking at museum objects, read the labels, study the materials and analyze the designs and styles. Number 8
Read and Research. Myriad books provide insight into collecting different art forms. Choose from books by and about Native Americans that provide guidance.
