FORREST CARTER Forrest Carter.
The Education of Little Tree. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1986.
Call Number: PS 3553 .A777 Z464 1986 c.2 This charming memoir is ostensibly about Carter’s childhood in the Tennessee mountains with his Cherokee grandparents. His publisher reported that he was "Storyteller in Council to the Cherokee Nations," and that "he uses the council storytelling method of the Indian in passing on the history of his people." Many years after the publication of his "memoir," it was discovered that Carter was not a Cherokee, but a white man from Alabama who had once been a propagandist for George Wallace. This revelation raised the question of "authenticity"in Native American literature: whose experience as a Native American is authentic enough to bestow the proper "authority?" Memoir or fiction

Reading into Native American writers
Simon Ortiz is one of a number of Native American authors working to establish a body of literature about their culture. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Literature Arts, Culture and Entertainment or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? NEW YORK (AP) The words of Simon Ortiz mingle with the muffled sounds of city traffic that have drifted into an art studio where dozens have gathered to hear his poetry. He closes his book and takes a deep breath. He scans his audience, searching for understanding and acceptance and is immediately greeted with warm, enthusiastic applause. People begin to cluster about him, eager to talk, eager to learn more about Indians in America. Things weren't always this way for Ortiz, who grew up during a time when he had to fight just to be able to speak in his own language. Now, his poems, written in both English and Pueblo, allow him to keep his culture alive. "It's a form of resistance," Ortiz says after his reading at the American Indian Community House in downtown Manhattan. "If there was not a body of literature, then Native people would be invisible. Sometimes the term 'Indian' is an abstract idea. But when we express ideas in literature, then we have a valid body of expression that's totally ours."

Native North American Literature
page: Non-Indian Writers and the Male Two-Spirit Tradition Long before the emergence of lesbian and gay Native writing, the two-spirit tradition captured the imagination of non-Indian writers. Two of the most frequently cited passages from the genre of "contact literature" include George Catlin's account of the "Dance to the Berdashe" (in Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Conditions of the North American Indians [1841]) and John Tanner's description of the two-spirit Ozaw-wen-dib's attempt to seduce him in his A Narrative of the Captivity and Adventures of John Tanner The influence of accounts like these is apparent in the portrayal of Little Horse, a Cheyenne hemaneh , in Thomas Berger's Little Big Man (1964) and in its subsequent screenplay (1970). (By contrast, over 20 years later, Kevin Costner's film epic, Dances with Wolves , although acclaimed for its authenticity, made no mention of the Lakota winkte tradition.)

At present, as of the last update here, less than 1/2 of the ADULT reading level book, and none of the art-craft-cookbooks have been entered in the database from which these index lists are generated. All reviews are (in no particular order) in the long textfiles, but only the indexed ones hav individual reviews. The thumbs-down icon marks a book which is disrecommended, generally for some form of racism, factual inaccuracies, misleading. Thumbs-up books are very highly recommended, a school library must-have if possible, though this is far more subjective for children's books than the thumbs-down. See SYMBOLS page for more. Often there's a longer review-essay accessible on these indexes to individual review-files than the paragraph or 2 in the long text age-level files. (See the illustrated review of COLONIALISM ON TRIAL for example.) The primary users of these reviewed books are seen as Native schools or students (and their teachers). Secondarily, we believe that good, rather than (often popular) bad books should be used for non-Indian students. A major objective here is to educate readers of all the reviews who (one hopes) will get and read some of the best books to learn more about native history, culture, values (and facts) and become able to make good book selections with limited book budget funds. Native Americans
This article by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in the Library Corner column of Teaching K-8 Magazine The study of Native American people and their cultures is a challenge because of the stereotypes that exist, not only in the literature, but in our own minds and in those of the children we teach. Not long ago I was working with children in a school on the east coast and told them I had just come from working with Indian children in North Dakota. They were sure I was telling another story since, they said, "There aren't any more Indians. We killed them all." Hard to believe such things in today's world of television and world wide communication, but I'm sure these children were not unique in their ignorance. Many studies of Indians leave students convinced that all Indians lived in tepees then and still do or that they were all wiped out, not that our ancestors didn't try.

CLSCLR is currently under complete redesign. We plan to relaunch in early fall 2005. At the moment, updated author interviews, publishing news, links, and reading recommendations are being posted to cynsations . Those applicable will be duplicated on the main site as part of the updating and redesign process. See cynsations for the latest! contemporary historical native authors/illustrators teacher/librarian resources ... links Overall, children's and young adult books with Native American Indian characters and themes have improved dramatically since I was a kid. We have a lot more to pick from than the Sacajewea and Pocahontas biographies, the tales of "savagery" on the Prairie.
Looking at those writers who've focused a significant portion of their work in this area, Native authors as well as non-Native authors with strong community ties (or those who did their homework), it's clear that there are some quality books now available. And Native authors and illustrators are represented in very low numbers (factoring out of the numberous books by Abenaki author-poet Joseph Bruchac, community representation is slight, especially in trade books).

The CDL METS Repository
The California Digital Library (CDL) is developing a digital object repository to support collections managed by the CDL. The repository conforms to the following criteria:
  • Metadata for the objects (digital images, encoded texts, etc.) and associated content files in the repository are encoded using the Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS) schema. Objects in the repository are assigned persistent identifiers according to a naming scheme called the Archival Resource Key (ARK) . The ARK scheme was developed at the National Library of Medicine and is currently in production use at the CDL.
As of May 2005, the CDL provides access to more than 215,000 METS records and provides key infrastructure for several of the CDL's services, including CaliforniaDigitalLibrary.org , the Online Archive of California (OAC) , and eScholarship Editions Over time, the CDL plans to make many of the components of its repository available to the digital library community. Some CDL partners are already beginning to deploy services using the CDL repository. In September 2003, Musems and Online Archives Collaboration (MOAC) launched its redesigned service, using a beta version of CDL's
