Listening to Native Americans:
Making Peace with the Past for the Future
John Barry Ryan
John Barry Ryan is Professor of Religious Studies and a member of the Peace Studies faculty at Manhattan College. His research interests include liturgical studies and American Indian religions. It is a Native American tradition to introduce oneself before one speaks. In that spirit, I begin with some steps in my own journey of listening to Native Americans. I acknowledge at the outset that for most of my life I did not listen, maybe could not listen. But for a decade now, I have been attempting to listen to Native Americans. "Attempting" is the appropriate word because I am very much aware that I bring preconceptions, hardheadedness, and lack of attention to the conversation. Even worse, Native Americans have taught me that I carry a much heavier burden. I view the world from the conqueror's point of view, which informs everything I do. I knew this intellectually, but in listening to Native Americans I understand more concretely and in some detail what it means. I only dared propose a course on Native American Religions because I had researched Navajo prayer forms for two papers that I presented, one in 1985 at the annual meeting of the North American Academy of Liturgy and the other in 1991 at the biannual meeting of

    Native American Literature
Stop the judging! Stop the stereotypes, and read! Native Americans literature shows life, logic and informative backgrounds of the life of a Native American. Native American literature is important, and there are numerous reasons why. The study of Native American literature has opened the minds of many people. Native American literature is not only informative but entertaining, whether the literature is a wise tale to a contemporary perspective non-fiction piece. Most of the stories were told orally also, so by having a story documented and written it is much more significant and needed to be remembered. The Literature can also portray a different prospective o

Print Preview of Section American Literature: Prose , fiction and nonfiction of the American colonies and the United States, written in the English language from about 1600 to the present. This literature captures America’s quest to understand and define itself. From the beginning America was unique in the diversity of its inhabitants; over time they arrived from all parts of the world. Although English quickly became the language of America, regional and ethnic dialects have enlivened and enriched the country’s literature almost from the start. Today American prose encompasses a variety of traditions and voices that share a common context: the geographical region now known as the United States. Native American literatures, which were largely oral at the time of colonial settlement, stand apart as a separate tradition that is itself strong and varied.

    About the exhibit
Celebrate the new collection of fiction, poetry, short stories and drama by Native American writers now preserved in the John Wilson Room, Special Collections of Multnomah County Library. The Library Foundation , with support from many generous individual donors, raised the funds necessary to ensure this founding of one of the finest publicly-held Native American literature collections in the western United States. The library intends to expand the collection by acquiring all that is published in these genres by American and Canadian authors. The exhibition features highlights from this rich collection, including some of the earliest works of fiction; inscribed and presentation copies such as an important rare 1850 Ojibwe poetic narrative by Kah-Ge-Ga-Gah-Bowh (George Copway); the first book of poetry by a Canadian Indian woman, Emily Pauline Johnson (Mohawk) from 1895; and rare and unusual works by major contemporary writers, including Pulitzer Prize winner N. Scott Momaday (Kiowa), Leslie Silko (Laguna Pueblo), Joy Harjo (Muscogee/Creek), Gerald Vizenor (Anishinaabe) Sherman Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d'Alene), Simon Ortiz (Acoma Pueblo) and others. Other items in the exhibit include original and informative holographic (handwritten) manuscripts and correspondence by native writers; beautiful and unusual fine-press books and broadsides with original illustrations; and works important to mainstream American culture, including
