Local politicians take stand on Native American issues at UW rally
Native American dancers performed tradional dances during Friday's Tribal Sovereignty and Treaty Rights Rally.
Kathleen Belew The Daily
Native American political groups rallied at Red Square on Friday to raise awareness on sovereignty issues and to encourage Native American students to vote. The rally, staged as a effort to reinvigorate the native voting population in the face of a recent Republican resolution to dissolve tribal self-rule featured prominent political speakers, UW President Richard McCormick, as well as traditional drumming, singing, dancing, voter registration and a salmon feed. Rally organizer and UW American Indian Student Commission director Ryan Sense Wilson began the rally with a speech about why people do not take political action. "People are scared," Wilson said. "They say,'What is going to happen to us if we stand up against those who wish to oppress us?' And the fear comes from 'What if we lose? What happens if we lose? We're going to get hurt even worse,' But you can't think that way, because we are the Indian people and we're not losers."

Native Americans at Princeton
Welcome to the Native Americans at Princeton home page! This installment is the first for the 1998 year. It is about time that this page receive a face-lift. We are going to start updating this page on a regular basis, blah blah blah blah blah... As many of you have noticed, these were famous last words, or rather, famous first words. Also, I thought we might get a new page editor person after elections, but there is a large psychological impediment to learning HTML, and I have yet to train my possible replacements. Nevertheless, there must eventually be new blood taking over this project, unless for some inexplicable reason, Princeton keeps me here a while longer. Until then, we reiterate our apologies. Our email has again been piling up, and although we have been responding to it more often than we update this page, it may be a while before we sift through it all. It works on a kind of priority system that I won't explain here because it's unfair. Just bear with us while we start the new semester, and we sincerely hope that the people who replace us are more thorough electronic correspondents. :-) You are user number since February 3, 1996
