"A Seat At The Table is a valuable and insightful film about a too long overlooked topic, the right of Native American people to have their sacred sites and practices honored and protected. Let's hope it gets shown far and wide, enough to bring about a real shift in policy and consciousness".

Kifaru Productions
Kifaru Productions has been producing documentaries on contemporary Native American issues since 1990. Our programs have garnered both educational and film industry awards and raves from reviewers as diverse as International Variety and The Washington Post. While one of our titles, "Wiping The Tears Of Seven Generations," was broadcast on The Disney Channel as part of Disney's American Legacy Series, another, "The Peyote Road," was instrumental in overturning a United States Supreme Court decision. The mandate of our work has been to amplify the efforts of Native spiritual leaders including urgent religious freedom issues, "A Seat At The Table," as well as the health of the people, "The Red Road To Sobriety."

Native American Issues Montana's tribes bring a rich history and culture full of long-standing traditions to our state. I'm committed to boosting the economic health of our reservations and in our Indian communities while also protecting their heritage. It's important for the entire delegation to work together with our tribal leaders and the Interior Department to provide the needed resources to help our Native American communities flourish. In 2001, I was proud to co-host a Tribal Economic Development Summit with Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming. The summit focused on strengthening education and training opportunities on the reservations and increasing availability of needed services. The summit also focused on creating partnerships between tribal and non-tribal entities, on and off the reservation. I'm dedicated to ensuring that no community is left behind as we move our economy forward, especially the Native American community that has given and continues to give so much to our state. SPEAKER TO FOCUS HUMOR ON NATIVE AMERICAN ISSUES By Stephen Swanson, 541-737-0789
SOURCE: Native American Longhouse, 541-737-2738 CORVALLIS - Native American writer, poet and filmmaker Sherman Alexie will lace a talk about contemporary Native American life with humor on Thursday, May 19, at Oregon State University. "Without Reservations: An Urban Indian's Comic, Poetic, and Highly Irreverent Look at the World" starts at 7:30 p.m. at OSU's LaSells Stewart Center at 26th Street and Western Boulevard. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be sign language-interpreted. A Spokane/Coeur d' Alene Indian, Alexie wrote the screenplay for the 1998 motion picture "Smoke Signals," which was based on one of his stories. Alexie grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, about 50 miles northwest of Spokane. He received his bachelor's degree in American studies from Washington State University in Pullman in 1994. Two of his poetry collections - "The Business of Fancydancing" and "I Would Steal Horses" - were published just one year after he graduated from WSU. He is a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowship. His book, "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," earned the Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award, founded by the late Mary Hemingway - wife of Ernest Hemingway - in 1976 to honor her late husband and draw attention to first books of fiction.

A Minneapolis, Minn. native, Dr. Markstrom first worked with Native Americans while a student at the University of Minnesota. In the 1980s, she served as a family counselor in tribal social service programs in South Dakota and an instructor at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe’s community college. As a faculty member in the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences, Markstrom’s current work focuses on the education and development of Native American children and youth. She was recently invited to present a workshop, "Enhancing the Learning Experience of the American Indian Child," at the First Annual Conference on the Education of the American Indian Child held in Arizona. Markstrom, an associate professor of child development and family studies and member of the WVU Native American Studies Program, is currently conducting research for a book, "The Significance of Coming-of-Age Ceremonies for Contemporary American Indian Girls." The work documents the parallels found in puberty ceremonies across Native American tribes and the implications for positive youth development of contemporary adolescents.
