From the environment to e-trade, Native Americans are taking great strides in the United States. In November, we celebrate the culture and contributions of the first Americans.
"As keepers of a rich and ancient cultural heritage, Native Americans share with all of us the beauty of their art, the power of their songs and the grace of their people," President Clinton said in a National American Indian Heritage Month proclamation on November 9, 2000. "As individuals, they have distinguished themselves in virtually every field, from the arts to the sciences, from the world of sports to the world of commerce."

Dr. Geoffrey Gamble president@montana.edu President Geoff Gamble's Response to Native American Issues June 21, 2002 to The New York Times June 21, 2001 Mr. Howell Raines, Editorial Page Editor New York Times 229W. 43rd Street New York, NY 10036 Dear Mr. Raines, I write because of comments made in a recent New York Times article, "Off-Field Hurdles Stymie Indian Athletes" (6/17/01) that included quotes from the men's basketball coach at Montana State University, where I serve as president. I would like to make it clear that the comments do not reflect the attitudes nor the perceptions of myself or the administration at Montana State University, nor does it mirror the experience of American Indian students on this campus. For several decades, Montana State University has worked diligently to provide a supportive environment for American Indian students. With about 60,000 American Indians living in Montana, or six percent of the state's population, it is the largest minority in both our institution and in our state. Part of our university's mission is to serve the American Indians of our state. Our successes are many. One of the most respected members of our faculty is a respected American Indian scholar and the endowed chair in our very healthy Native American Studies department. One of the most honored students in our recent graduating class was an American Indian woman who is on her way to medical school. American Indian athletes have been successful participants in our track, football, and basketball programs for many years. In fact, one of the most successful members of our current basketball team is American Indian.

Native American Issues
There are a number of good films that address the issues of native peoples. The following are three films that are highly recommended: Smoke Signals (1998), available at many video stores for rent or www.amazon.com for purchase for $13.99. Based on a couple of short stories by Sherman Alexie, it is directed by a Cheyenne-Arapaho, Chris Eyre. The story deals with the memory of a Native American and how the members of the family deal with his death. In Whose Honor Pow Wow Highway (1989), no review given. There are also many good publications that deal with current issues. The following are a few that are recommended: Indian Report available by contacting: Friends Committee on National Legislation, 245 Second Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. Phone: 202-547-6000.

http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/hunap/about.html
Welcome! Dear Friends and Colleagues, My name is Carmen Lopez (Ed.M. class of 2000) and it is my great honor to return to the HUNAP community as the Interim Executive Director. On behalf of the Harvard University Native American Program (HUNAP), I extend a warm welcome to all! While HUNAP has existed in various forms since its inception in 1970 as a program to train Native American leaders in the field of education, only recently has it been designated as one of Harvard's twelve Interfaculty Initiatives. Consistent with the Harvard University charter of 1650 calling for the "education of English and Indian youth," HUNAP has developed partnerships with established faculties at Harvard to build viable programs of research, teaching, and outreach on issues affecting the lives of indigenous peoples. While these scholarly activities are central to the mission of the program and of a great university, HUNAP maintains a strong emphasis on student support and development. We invite you to browse the features of our program and share our excitement as Harvard University reinvigorates its commitment to American Indian issues, students, leaders, and nations.

Summary
Coverage of Native American issues is virtually nonexistent in some markets. Much of this coverage revolves around stories about festivals and holidays. There are few stories with much depth and context. Yet some of the most complex issues a reporter will cover, such as sovereignty, involve Native American issues. Conference Objectives
Journalists attending this workshop can expect to gain an understanding of sovereignty and how this issue overshadows other issues, such as economics, gaming, and open meetings. Exact Location 2002 National Convention of the Native American Journalists Association, Holiday Inn On The Bay, 1355 N. Harbor Drive San Diego, Calif. Map/Directions to the conference Cost $150 includes registration for both the workshop and the convention, lunch and materials.

Church addresses wide range of Native American issues
A UMNS News Feature
News media Contact: Linda Green Nashville, Tenn. United Methodists took a variety of actions related to Native American concerns about sports logos, land rights, economic development and other issues during the denomination's recent legislative meeting. Meeting in Cleveland May 2-12, the delegates to the General Conference particularly criticized the use of the "Chief Wahoo" logo by the Indians baseball team. The 992 lay and clergy delegates from around the world called for dialogue with the management of the Cleveland Indians regarding use of the logo, which many Native Americans feel is demeaning. The delegates, which included 13 Native Americans, called on the United Methodist Church to direct the appropriate church agencies, in consultation with Native American groups, to engage the Cleveland community and the baseball team's owners in a dialogue to increase understanding and sensitivity about ethnic caricatures and mascots. Several of the Native American delegates also joined with other supporters and local Indians in protesting use of the logo during the Cleveland team's May 11 home game.

Mt. Pleasant Hispanic Center After School Program - runs Monday-Thursday from
English classes at Mt. Pleasant Hispanic Center - These are adult English classes for people in the neighborhood that have moved here from other countries and need to learn. They come from many different countries, not all Hispanic. Beginner classes are larger (15 -20 students) and are on Tues/Thurs from 9:30am - noon or 6-8pm . Intermediate classes are smaller (5-10 students) and are on Mon/Wed from 9:30am - noon or 6-8pm . We usually go to the night classes, leaving at 5:30pm from the Circle and returning at 8:30pm .
Migrant Education Mentoring - I have started a group of 10 middle school kids (5 from Chambersburg and 5 from Harrisburg) to be paired with a Messiah College student as a mentor. For this program, you would get the name and address of the student in the Harrisburg/Chambersburg area and we would try to arrange it so that you could go visit the family at least once a month . We would also have organized activities each month to get together as a whole group, just for fun and to build relationships with them. These activities would usually be on
