THE INDIAN PROBLEM
Introduction

Despite America's propensity to amuse its children with toy tomahawks and feather bonnets and a current surplus of plastic soda cups embellished with the smiling face of Disney's Pocahonatas, most Americans have little understanding of Native American history and culture. Having grown up in the age of televisionwatching old westerns starring cowboy heroes such as John Waynemany Americans currently perceive historic Indians as the child-like "noble savage" or the "blood-thirsty heathen." Little is known of the Indian's struggles to survive beside and within an ever-encroaching white world. As whites moved westward, driven by the forces of Manifest Destiny, Native Americans were increasingly displaced from their ancestral homes as the West became overrun by homesteaders, prospectors, cattlemen, and farmers. Beginning in the 1860s, a thirty-year conflict arose as the government sought to concentrate the Plains Indian tribes on smaller tracts of land, considered less desirable to white settlers. Soldiers who had fought in the Civil War were now responsible for corralling tribes onto these reservations. Philip Sheridan, a Civil War general who led many campaigns against the Plains Indians, is famous for saying: "The only good Indian is a dead Indian." But even he recognized the injustice that lay behind the late 19th century warfare: "We took away their country and their means of support, broke up their mode of living, their habits of life, introduced disease and decay among them, and it was for this and against this that they made war. Could anyone expect less?"

An Overview of Native Americans in Kentucky History
For thousands of years Native Americans lived and hunted within the present boundaries of Kentucky. However, by the time of the first European settlement in 1774-75, very few Native Americans resided in Kentucky. The Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee were the three major tribes that influenced Kentucky. The Shawnee was a powerful tribe whose lands included what is now part of Ohio. It claimed the area of Kentucky for a hunting ground and jealously guarded the region. Groups of Shawnee warriors traveled throughout the northern and central portions of Kentucky on hunting expeditions. However, the last settlement of the Shawnee in Kentucky, Eskippakithiki , located in present-day Clark County, was abandoned by 1754. The Shawnee raided the early settlements of Kentucky and did not give up their claims to the area until after the War of 1812. There was a small group of Cherokee who lived in the southeastern portion of the state. Some of the early settlers did intermarry with these Native Americans. Also, a number of Cherokee who were being removed to Oklahoma reservations on the infamous "Trail of Tears" remained in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. There they married into local families. Thus, most people who have Native American ancestry from Kentucky are descended from the Cherokee nation.

At present, as of the last update here, less than 1/2 of the ADULT reading level book, and none of the art-craft-cookbooks have been entered in the database from which these index lists are generated. All reviews are (in no particular order) in the long textfiles, but only the indexed ones hav individual reviews. The thumbs-down icon marks a book which is disrecommended, generally for some form of racism, factual inaccuracies, misleading. Thumbs-up books are very highly recommended, a school library must-have if possible, though this is far more subjective for children's books than the thumbs-down. See SYMBOLS page for more. Often there's a longer review-essay accessible on these indexes to individual review-files than the paragraph or 2 in the long text age-level files. (See the illustrated review of COLONIALISM ON TRIAL for example.) The primary users of these reviewed books are seen as Native schools or students (and their teachers). Secondarily, we believe that good, rather than (often popular) bad books should be used for non-Indian students. A major objective here is to educate readers of all the reviews who (one hopes) will get and read some of the best books to learn more about native history, culture, values (and facts) and become able to make good book selections with limited book budget funds.
