Native American medicine society, Santa Cruz clan
We are the Santa Cruz, California clan (chapter) of Nastao Nation. Our efforts are directed primarily to causes that promote the well-being and culture of indigenous peoples in our local region, regardless of tribe. We welcome contact with and links from other Native American organizations.
Nastao Nation is a Native American medicine society with a specific cultural, spiritual, political, and social viewpoint. However, the term "Nastao" is sometimes used by others.
The term Panachi includes all living descendants of the indigenous peoples of North and Central America, from Alaska to Panama. It is a geographic term that does not indicate cultural cohesion. NA-STA-O can be interpreted as Morning-Star Medicine Society It promotes sustainable living, Native American ceremony, culture, art, and a drug- and alcohol-free environment.

Approximately 1.5% of the U.S. population 4.1 million Americans Need for Mental Health Care No large-scale epidemiological studies of AIANs have yet been published. The results of one such study which will provide considerable information about the prevalence of mental disorders among the AIAN population are expected in the near future. One small study with a 20-year follow-up found the lifetime prevalence of mental disorders to be 70%. The Great Smoky Mountain Study found that AI children had similar rates of disorder (17%) compared to white children (19%). AI children had lower rates of tics (2 vs. 4%) and higher rates of substance abuse (1 vs. 0.1%). Almost all of the latter was accounted for by alcohol use among 13-year-old AI children. Large-scale studies of mental disorders among older American Indians are lacking, but smaller studies have found rates of depression ranging from 10 to 30%. The prevalence rate of suicide for AI/ANs is 1.5 times the national rate. AIAN males ages 15 to 24 account for two-thirds of all AI/AN suicides. Violent deaths – unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide – account for 75% of all mortality in the second decade of life for AIANs.

Remarks of Attorney General John Ashcroft Native American Heritage Event Wednesday, November 28, 2001 Good morning. This morning we come together to recognize the many contributions of Native Americans to the Department of Justice and to our country. At a time when all Americans are being asked to rise to the defense of our country and its values, the First Americans are among the most dedicated and patriotic citizens of our nation. Here at the Department of Justice, we have over 900 Native American men and women serving in many capacities. They include Assistant U.S. Attorneys, FBI agents, Victim Witness Coordinators, federal Indian law specialists and others in virtually every component of this Department. Today, we take time out of our busy schedules to thank them for their service to the nation. Just as justice knows no race or ethnicity, its servants come from many different backgrounds. We thank all of you for your dedication to defending freedom with the law. It is fitting that we celebrate Native American heritage in the same month that we honor American veterans. Native Americans have the single highest record of per capita military service of any group in America.

General Information Regarding Fellowship and Internship Programs
The following section includes descriptions of fellowships, internships and other programs available at the Institution. Please take note of specialized fellowships and their respective places of contact. As part of its mandate for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge," including the diverse ideas, skills, and cultures of our nation, the Smithsonian Institution pursues policies of equal opportunity and cultural diversity. Smithsonian fellowships and internships are awarded on the basis of these policies. Applicants are evaluated on their academic standing, scholarly qualifications, experiences, the quality of the research project or study proposed and its suitability to Smithsonian collections, facilities, and programs. Scholars and students with outside sources of funding are also encouraged to utilize the Institution's resources and facilities. The Office of Fellowships can facilitate visiting appointments in such cases provided that the investigator obtains approval from the staff member with whom he/she would consult.
INTERNSHIPS
An internship at the Smithsonian Institution is a prearranged, structured learning experience scheduled within a specific time frame. The experience must be relevant to the intern's academic and professional goals, and to research and museum activities of the Institution. An internship is performed under the direct supervision of Smithsonian staff.

Influence Home Circa 1804 Heritage The Illiniwek In the 1600's the territory of the Illini Confederacy, a tribal group composed of twelve or thirteen allied tribes, covered areas that are now part of four states, including the region where St. Louis was founded in 1764. By the early 1800's, when treaties with the United States ultimately moved them away from their homeland, their population had dwindled to less than 200 people. Who were the Illiniwek people, and what brought about their swift decline?
The Illiniwek were hunters and gatherers, farmers, warriors, and traders. In the Algonkin tongue ilini means "man" and iw means "is". "When one speaks the word 'Illinois,'" said the explorer Jacques Marquette, "it is as if one said in their language, 'the men',... As if the other [Indians] were looked upon by them merely as animals." According to the present day Peoria Indian tribe of Oklahoma, Illinois means "tribe of superior men". The Illini dialect was similar to that of the Miami, and closely related to the Chippewa (Ojibway), Potawatomi, and Kickapoo. By the 1600's, the Illiniwek Confederation probably consisted of the Kaskaskia, Peoria, Cahokia, Tamaroa, Michigamea, Moingwena, Tapouaro or Tapouro, Coiracoentanon or Korakoenitanon, Espemnka, Chinkoa or Chinko, Cepoussa or Chepoussa, Maroa, and Omouahoas. In this loosely-knit confederacy, the tribal council, with a formally appointed chief, was the governing body. Each tribe had a totem, similar in function to a European coat-of-arms. Before 1600 the Illiniwek Confederacy had a Grand Chief and one or more totems to signify the entire group of tribes.
