Welcome to Native Nashville! Clee's Ferry Anniversary
February 5, 2005 marks the 10th anniversary of the placement of Clee's Ferry on the Tennessee Archaeological Registry. Clee's Ferry is the site of an ancient Native American burial ground on the Cumberland River in Nashville. This sacred place was heavily looted until members of the Alliance for Native American Indian Rights camped out on the site in January of 1995, holding a vigil and demanding the site be placed on the Registry, which would allow the state to post signs warning against artifact theft and grave desecration. Two weeks later the site was finally added to the Registry, and the next morning, February 6, 1995, Nick Fielder, the state Archaeologist, personally erected steel signposts and posted the warning signs. In honor of this event, we would like to direct your attention to our

An Overview of Native Americans in Kentucky History
For thousands of years Native Americans lived and hunted within the present boundaries of Kentucky. However, by the time of the first European settlement in 1774-75, very few Native Americans resided in Kentucky. The Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee were the three major tribes that influenced Kentucky. The Shawnee was a powerful tribe whose lands included what is now part of Ohio. It claimed the area of Kentucky for a hunting ground and jealously guarded the region. Groups of Shawnee warriors traveled throughout the northern and central portions of Kentucky on hunting expeditions. However, the last settlement of the Shawnee in Kentucky, Eskippakithiki , located in present-day Clark County, was abandoned by 1754. The Shawnee raided the early settlements of Kentucky and did not give up their claims to the area until after the War of 1812. There was a small group of Cherokee who lived in the southeastern portion of the state. Some of the early settlers did intermarry with these Native Americans. Also, a number of Cherokee who were being removed to Oklahoma reservations on the infamous "Trail of Tears" remained in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. There they married into local families. Thus, most people who have Native American ancestry from Kentucky are descended from the Cherokee nation.

Native American Research By Connie Lenzen, CGRS Native American ancestry is one of the most challenging areas of genealogy research. Often, people have family traditions that some distant grandmother or grandfather was part Indian. They want to locate this ancestor and to trace the lineage. The first step is to begin with the present. Find all the information that you can about your parents. Then do the same for your grandparents and your great-grandparents. Write down their vital statistics, such as birth date and place, marriage date and place, and death date and place. Obtain a genealogy guidebook, such as The IdiotÕs Guide to Genealogy . Use it to learn how to conduct genealogy research. Read a Òhow-toÓ for Native American genealogy research. Several are in the GFO collection. Learn which tribes lived in the areas where your ancestors lived. Read about them so you can learn their history. At some point in your research, you may identify the tribal affiliation of your ancestors. This is when you switch paths and begin to do your research in the Indian records. The Genealogical Forum of Oregon (GFO) has the following list of books, microfilms, and audiotapes in the library collection. People researching their Native American genealogy are welcome to use the facility. The visitor fee is $5.00 per day, and the address and hours are at
