The study of Native American Indian peoples raises issues that are critical for a meaningful liberal arts education. Concepts such as power, citizenship, culture, identity, justice, and sovereignty take on new meanings in the context of colonialism and the struggles, past and present, of indigenous peoples. Faculty, staff and students meet regularly to discuss concerns of tribal people, cultural and histories, with emphasis on the heritage of the tribes of the Northeastern region of North America. History of Native American Lacrosse
By Thomas Vennum Jr.
Author of American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother of War
Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by American Indians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from the others, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and convey it into or past a goal to score a point. The cardinal rule in all varieties of lacrosse was that the ball, with few exceptions, must not be touched with the hands. Early data on lacrosse, from missionaries such as French Jesuits in Huron country in the 1630s and English explorers, such as Jonathan Carver in the mid-eighteenth century Great Lakes area, are scant and often conflicting. They inform us mostly about team size, equipment used, the duration of games and length of playing fields but tell us almost nothing about stickhandling, game strategy, or the rules of play. The oldest surviving sticks date only from the first quarter of the nineteenth century, and the first detailed reports on Indian lacrosse are even later. George Beers provided good information on Mohawk playing techniques in his Lacrosse (1869), while James Mooney in the

Postsecondary Financial Aid for American Indians and Alaska Natives. ERIC Digest.
One of the many critical issues confronting the education of American Indians and Alaska Natives [hereafter, "Natives"] is ensuring that Native students gain equal access to postsecondary education and that they are prepared for academic success. This Digest summarizes challenges Native students confront in obtaining adequate financial aid; general sources of aid for Native students; and ways communities and parents can support students through the financial aid process. The Digest ends with some readily available print and Web-based sources of information about student financial aid.
FINANCIAL AID CHALLENGES AND REALITIES
Lack of family resources. Many Native students enter college with no resources other than what they receive through financial aid. High levels of unemployment in many Native communities severely limit students' and their families' ability to save money for education (LaCounte, 1987). During the 1992-93 academic year, about 62 percent of Native American undergraduates needed financial assistance. Most of these students received financial aid in the form of grants, loans, and work-study (Pavel et al., 1998).

Other Internet Resources Contrary to stereotypes seen in the media, several studies have found use of alcohol and other substances among racial and ethnic minority college students to be lower than among white students. At historically black colleges, for instance, about half the percentage of students report using tobacco, marijuana, or cocaine compared with students at predominantly white colleges. Because of the large variations in use rates, before a college begins prevention work it is important for program administrators to identify the differing patterns of alcohol and other drug use among the racial and ethnic groups on campus. Alcohol Consumption This document is also available in Acrobat format. A national study, conducted by the Core Institute, of about 40,000 college and university students found the largest proportion of abstainers to be among Asian/Pacific Islander and African American respondents. The percentages of students who had consumed alcohol in the previous year were as follows: Asian/Pacific Islanders, 71 percent; African Americans, 72 percent; Native Americans, 83 percent; Hispanics, 85 percent; and whites, 87 percent. A survey at the University of California, Los Angeles, found similar racial and ethnic differences in drinking patterns.

"We are very pleased with the results of the Advanced Placement Report to the Nation. AP students, parents, educators, and policymakers should be congratulated. More high school students than ever before are succeeding on college-level AP Exams, exams that are more rigorous than ever before." . Only 10 percent of the class of 2000 accomplished this goal. New York is the first state in the nation to see more than 20 percent of its graduating class achieve a grade of 3 or higher on an AP Exam. The states of Maryland, Utah, Florida, California, and Massachusetts are close to this level of achievement, each with between 18 and 20 percent of students earning a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam.

Student paper on the Chippewa tradition of smudging.
    http://www.bmcc.org/Bimaadzwin/Traditions/smudging.htm
Smudging by Elaine Lunham Virginia Graverette Pigeon, Tribal Elder of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, member of the Cedar Women's Society, Elder of the Mide Lodge. With these credentials, I realized that Virginia holds a lot of wisdom, guidance, and teachings. For as long as I can remember, I had heard of the Anishinabe people smudging with sacred herbs such as tobacco, sweetgrass, sage, and cedar. I always wondered the meaning behind it (though I had my own ideas). One day I went to Virginia, seeking answers to my questions, trying to gain insight and knowledge so that one day I could pass this on to my children and their children. Virginia began by saying that some people follow the Traditional Way and some follow the Christian Way and that one way respects the aspects of both ways. Both know one God. Virginia said that there are a lot of stories and legends that have been brought down from generation to generation. She said that there are a lot of reasons why we should smudge and that it is a good thing to smudge, either with one of the sacred herbs or all of them together. She said: In the first place, tobacco (a-say-ma) was a gift of the Four Manido (Spirits of the Four Directions). It was the father of Nanabush who gave the tobacco (ah-say-ma) and shared the custom of smoking with his son after their epic battle in war, as a symbol of peace. Nanabush in turn passed on the custom to the Anishnabe as a ceremony. Thereafter, the Anishnabe smoked the Pipe of Peace before great councils, after war, and before other ceremonies. The Anishnabe adopted the custom and made it part of their daily lives to compose their minds and spirits. It is said that it will chase away feelings that are bad or negative and bring on thoughts that are good or positivie.
