Native American Arts and Crafts
We get a lot of mail asking us to recommend websites where people can buy authentic American Indian arts and crafts. There are many imitations of Native American artwork out there, and it can be hard to tell the wheat from the chaff. It doesn't help that most Native American artists don't have websites, whereas every marketer of Chinese-made dreamcatcher knockoffs has at least twenty different URLs trying to sell their stuff.
So if you're looking for arts and crafts that were actually made by Native Americans, either because it's important to you to have the real thing or because you want to support native people with your purchase, here is our directory of American Indian artists whose work is available online. If you have a website of Native American art (traditional, contemporary, or mixed) to add to this list, let us know . We gladly advertise any individual native artist or native-owned art store here free of charge, provided that all arts and crafts were made by tribally recognized American Indian, Inuit, or First Nations artists.
Thank you for your interest in American Indian art!

Mitakuye oyasin! We are all related! It isn't too late. We still have time to recreate and change the value system of the present. We must! Survival will depend on it. Our Earth is our original mother. She is in deep labor now. There will be a new birth soon! The old value system will suffer and die. It cannot survive as our mother earth strains under the pressure put on her. She will not let man kill her. The First Nation's Peoples had a value system. I n Native American belief, the universe is a sphere having the sky world above and the watery underworld below, with the terrestrial disk of the earth dividing them. The earth is divided into four quadrants by the cardinal directions north, south, east, and west. The human task on earth is to keep the upper world and the underworld in balance.
The sky above is the realm of the powerful Thunderbird, whose eyes shoot out bolts of lightning and whose beating wings create thunder. The earth is the mother and procreator of life. In the waters beneath the earth is the underworld, where spirits also dwell. There are many symbols associated with each realm which can be seen on Native American works of art. These symbols help make the sources of spiritual power accessible on earth.

D uring the 19th century, American Indian women artists experimented with several different media and techniques when producing objects for both their own use and for exchange or sale. The introduction of European glass "seed" beads, silk ribbon, and cotton and wool cloth contributed to innovations in the design of shoulder bags, moccasins, and other elements of clothing. Older modes of artistic expression were adapted and combined with the new, conveying the vitality and dynamism of American Indian art and culture.

Pottery Zuni Fetishes Storytellers Sandpaintings ... News
In the Best of New Mexico issue of the Crosswinds Weekly , the Penfield Gallery of Indian Arts was named one of the Best Reasons for Locals to Spend Time in Old Town , especially for the huge fetish collection. The Penfield Gallery has hundreds of Zuni fetishes carved by the best artists from Zuni Pueblo available in their Albuquerque store. A considerable number of these can be seen on this website, the most extensive selection of Zuni fetishes available on the Internet. The gallery carries pottery made by the artists of the New Mexico Pueblos, as well as those of Hopi and the Navajo Nation. There is a large collection of miniature pottery, especially from Acoma and Santa Clara Pueblos, as well as the more traditional forms. The Navajo rugs carried by the gallery are all hand-woven, many of hand-spun wool, and come mainly from the western part of the Navajo Nation. A specialty is sandpainting rugs from the Shiprock area. Navajo sandpaintings are also found here, with large and highly detailed sandpaintings being available. A large selection of Pueblo storytellers is carried, including pottery masks. Navajo folk art and Zuni beaded figures are also available. We have recently added the gourd art of two non-Native artists, Robert Rivera and Tony McGregor. For over 100 years the Penfield Company has been a tradition in New Mexico, carrying only the finest Native American arts and crafts. Since 1975 they have been located in Albuquerque's Old Town on South Plaza. We invite you to browse through our online display. Orders may be placed by email or telephone. If you are in the Albuquerque area, we invite you to visit our gallery on South Plaza in Old Town. We also have a

    Artists' Views of Native Americans
The Indian was a favorite subject of many European and American born artists during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There was a wide range of viewpoints ex- pressed in this art, with an idealized image of the Indian as a "noble savage" being a frequent choice. Other artists saw their role as one of documenting an accurate picture of Indians and their society in a time when it was already disappearing.
