W elcome to the World from the Web Home Page. The theme of this site is to show pictures of various parks and landscapes throughout the USA and cities throughout the world. The parks include famous National Parks and less known National Monuments, National Recreation Areas, National Forests, various Coastlines, State and City Parks. Most of the park pictures are from the Western United States with the next largest concentration of photos in the northeast US. Pictures will appear from wherever I've been to photograph them. The easiest way to find a park on this site is to scroll down and pick a park that you want to look at or pick a state to get a listing of parks you are interested in seeing. Each park will have at least one page associated with it. Many parks have numerous pages. Each page will contain at least one picture and upto 10 or more pictures from that park. Typically, each page will have 5-7 pictures.
City listings can be found between the park and state listings. Cities are U.S. as well as international locations.
You can enlarge each picture individually, and then click on your browsers back button to return to the page. You can also enter any of the pictures and go directly to adjacent pictures by using the handy arrows found next to every enlarged picture.

Disturbed land restoration (DLR)
What are Abandoned Mineral Lands?
Abandoned mineral lands (known as AML) are one of many types of disturbed lands in the National Park System. AML sites are 1) underground and surface mines, 2) placer and dredge sites, and 3) oil, gas, and geothermal wells. Commodities mined at these sites ranged from soft rocks such as coal and sand/gravel to hard rock minerals such as gold, lead, and copper. Sites can contain waste rock (unprocessed rock), tailings (processed rock), abandoned roads, fuel storage tanks, drainage diversions, buildings such as mills and assay shops, deteriorating structures such as headframes and tramways, and abandoned heavy equipment. View a photographic overview of AML in the National Park System
AML Inventory and Statistics in the National Park System
Abandoned mines are in 134 of the 387 National Park System units. An ongoing inventory in the units so far revealed more than 3,200 sites with about 10,000 mine openings, piles of tailings, and hazardous structures and thousands of hectares of scarred lands. Many more abandoned mines are located in the recently acquired 1.2 million ha (3 million acres) of parkland in the California desert. In addition, there are 53 abandoned oil and gas wells in the National Parks that require permanent plugging and environmental assessment.

For more information on these and other local hiking trails, see my Northern Virginia Dayhiking page. A moderate dayhike starting from the edge of the park will take you on a fun (but usually crowded) boulder scramble across the top of Old Rag. Here's Bruce and Jody having lunch just below the summit. Lewis Spring Falls is reached in a moderate half-day hike from the Big Meadows Area. Combine this with trails to Dark Hollow Falls, Rose River Falls, and Blackrock Overlook for a variety of moderate to strenuous dayhikes. This leaf covered trail is part of a short hike to Millers Head, which has a nice view, but is partially obstructed. It makes for a pleasant walk if you're staying at Skyland, but otherwise not a trail to go out of your way for. A short walk followed by a short rock scramble will take you to an outstanding 360 degree view from the top of Blackrock Summit (that's Trayfoot Mountain in the center). Whiteoak Canyon is one of the most popular hiking areas in the park, with a variety of dayhike options ranging from easy to strenuous. There are six waterfalls on Whiteoak Run, but you'll have to go off-trail to see this view of Whiteoak Falls #5 In mid-May you can see numerous examples of Spiderwort blooming along the top of Trayfoot Mountain as part of a pleasant dayhike.

National Park Service Web Cameras
Overview
The National Park Service operates digital cameras at many parks to help educate the public on air quality issues. These cameras often show the effects of air pollution such as visibility impairment. Because these cameras are typically located near air quality monitoring sites, the camera web pages display other information along with the photo such as current levels of ozone, particulate matter, or sulfur dioxide air pollutants, visual range, and weather conditions. The digital photos are usually updated every 15 minutes, while air quality data values are revised hourly. Click on a park name in the map below to check its current visibility and air quality. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park does not operate a web camera but does post near real-time levels of sulfur dioxide resulting from volcanic emissions. Such emissions can be harmful at times to park visitors and staff. The following national parks have cameras but do not post air quality data with the images.

The National Parks of the United States represent an extraordinary variety of pristine natural environements at the scale of a continent. This image collection is the result of a monumental project to photograph in depth each of the National Parks, using when possible a large format camera. In the summer of 2002, I became the first photographer to complete this project, by achieving the goal of visiting each of the 58 US National Parks. This gallery currently contains more than 4000 pictures, making it an unique site on the web, but this is still on-going work and new images and information will be added regularly.
