Drama in the primary curriculum Drama doesn't appear within the curriculum as a subject in its own right and curriculum guidance until recently has tended to overlook the contribution that drama makes within primary schools. So what is the place of drama in the curriculum and its significance? Teaching drama is a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum for English as part of the 'speaking and listening' strand. Specifically pupils are required to participate in a wide range of drama activities, ensuring that they:
    • use language and actions to explore and convey situations, characters and emotions create and sustain roles when working individually and with others comment constructively on drama they have watched or in which they have taken part
The National Literacy Strategy Framework for Teaching (1998) - or NLS - is a non-statutory curriculum framework for reading and writing, but does not at KS1 and 2 address continuity and progression in speaking and listening. There has been enormous emphasis in the last few years in meeting the objectives of the NLS. However, to meet the full demands of the curriculum teachers need to ensure that they also allow sufficient time for the planned development and teaching of speaking and listening, which includes drama. Speaking and listening is the cornerstone of communication: its development should not be taken for granted or left to chance.

Community Languages - Curriculum guidance and support
National Curriculum
The 1995 document Modern Foreign Languages in the National Curriculum was replaced last year by Modern Foreign Languages - the National Curriculum for England . Multiple free copies were sent to all schools, and every teacher of community languages should have one. If too few copies were sent, schools can apply for more via the National Curriculum website ( http://www.nc.uk.net ) which contains an order form. Teachers in community schools either have to buy the booklets from the Stationery Office or persuade the LEA to obtain them for classes operating under the LEA's sponsorship. Alternatively, a slightly abbreviated version of the document may be downloaded from the Internet. If purchase is felt to be the only option, it costs £9.95 plus £2.50 postage and packing from HMSO, PO Box 29, Norwich NR3 1GN; there is a special telephone number for orders and queries: 01787 884288. Although the new document is much longer than the 1995 version, there are few significant changes to the purely MFL sections. In fact, in the level descriptions there are hardly any changes at all. However, the levels expected at the end of Key Stage 3 are now the same as for other subjects, which means that the attainment for the majority of pupils should be level 5/6. A far higher proportion than previously must therefore reach levels 4, 5 and 6. The only key to how this is to be achieved lies in changes to the tense requirements at level 5. Understanding and use of present, past

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. In September 2002 Citizenship becomes a completely new subject in England's secondary schools. Jerome Freeman, Principal Officer for History with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (OCA) - the authority responsible for advising the British government on curriculum content and qualification standards in England - outlines OCA's view on the connections between history and citizenship. With reference to the scheme of work that OCA officers have produced to help schools interpret the Citizenship curriculum, Jerome Freeman illustrates the ways in which Citizenship and History might be taught together. A new subject called citizenship becomes a statutory part of the curriculum in England's secondary schools at Key Stages 3 and 4 from September 2002.' Many schools will have already started preparing for its implementation. The aim is to enable pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding to become informed, active and responsible members of local, national and global communities.

Opportunities within 'Science in the National Curriculum'
The difficulties which many science teachers find in teaching about the spiritual and moral dimensions of science are matched by the difficulties which many RE teachers find in including science issues. These perceived difficulties are not surprising, since initial teacher training seldom addresses the relationships between these two disciplines. The Education Reform Act (1988) requires that 'The curriculum for a maintained school... promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society'. Furthermore, OFSTED have stated that 'The promotion of pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is a "whole school" issue... other subjects [than religious education] can play no less significant a part in inviting pupils to reflect on the purpose and meaning of life.' (Office for Standards in Education (1993) Handbook for the Inspection of Schools , Part 4, Guidance on the inspection schedule, p. 17, London, HMSO) The 'other subjects', of course, include science.

The revised National Curriculum took effect from September 2000. In this article we look at how this new curriculum, and other related guidance, address safety education in primary and secondary schools. Safety education is not necessarily about isolating children and young people from all potential hazards but is about equipping them to deal with situations safely. We aim to identify where in the curriculum we can teach the safety skills and knowledge they will need.

It determines the content of what will be taught, and sets attainment targets for learning. It also determines how performance will be assessed and reported. An effective National Curriculum therefore gives teachers, pupils, parents, employers and their wider community a clear and shared understanding of the skills and knowledge that young people will gain at school. It allows schools to meet the individual learning needs of pupils and to develop a distinctive character and ethos rooted in their local communities. It provides a framework within which all partners in education can support young people on the road to further learning.
