Teachers weekend - summary
Nine teachers from a range of backgrounds with vastly different experiences met to discuss how organic gardening could be part of the National Curriculum. From the very start there were ideas bouncing around. By the end of the weekend many of the suggestions had been rationalised. A brief summary of what was discussed follows.
Foundation Stage – Alphabet Garden
The virtues of using a garden with small children and its versatility for each curriculum area were noted. Ideas included:
Art and design technology that could be linked to the garden:
  • Designing a range of characters that live in the garden, different one for each letter of the alphabet, Making paper Mache flower pots, Recycling pots by decorating and planting seeds in.
Strong literacy theme:
  • Practical activities of growing seeds in the shape of a letter on a recycled tray to writing poems. Role-play areas in the garden or in a classroom depicting a garden.
Numeracy objectives:
  • Sorting seeds, counting

ENGLISH TEACHING BODIES CRITICISE NATIONAL CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT There is much current dissatisfaction amongst English teaching professionals about the purpose and reliability of National Curriculum Assessment procedures. The present system of Key Stage assessment judges the performance of pupils rather than their progress. Teachers are judged by the ability of their pupils to reach certain required levels of performance. As pupils are of varying abilities and aptitudes, to judge them on progress made would be more valuable. Although theoretically SATs are supposed to help pupils to improve, there is little evidence that they do this. Assessment is confidential and external so that pupils and teachers have no detailed feedback about performance. Research shows that grading work without detailed supporting commentary does little for the learning process. There needs to be a form of assessment that would genuinely help pupils to improve in their learning rather than simply grading them. Sampling rather than comprehensive testing might be a better means of doing this. The current form of National Curriculum testing is expensive in time and money and there is little evidence that it produces reliable or useful outcomes.

Ofsted encourages schools to be imaginative in adapting the curriculum Growing numbers of primary schools are taking advantage of the relaxed approach towards the literacy hour to experiment with the timetable. Topic and project work, jettisoned by many schools after being attacked by Chris Woodhead, are on the way back. This approach received official approval in October 2002 in a report from the Office for Standards in Education. The best schools, says Ofsted, do not necessarily follow the literacy and numeracy strategies to the letter. Ofsted has studied 31 of the best primary schools which combine high standards in English and maths with a strong emphasis on the humanities, arts and physical education. Its report, which is being sent to all primary schools in England as a guide to adapting the curriculum, will highlight the practices that these schools share. They have also reduced planning to a minimum, brought in external expertise and have a consistent teaching style.

  • Return to our modules listing homepage
  • Tutor: Geoff Timmins
    Content and aims
The module will begin with an overview of the History section of the revised National Curriculum (introduced in September, 2000) reviewing both the content of study areas as outlined in the Breadth of Study components and the principles underpinning the Attainment Targets and the Knowledge, Skills and Understanding components. Consideration will then be given to planning elements of two of the study units, based on an approach that identifies the type of historical understanding that children might acquire. There will be opportunity to examine examples of approaches used by classroom practitioners as reported in the literature and to devise exercises for classroom use. Consideration will also be given to the teaching and learning possibilities arising from ICT applications. The history study units covered will be drawn from Victorian Britain, Britain Since 1930 and Ancient Egypt

    National Curriculum
The UK National Curriculum sets out a clear, full and statutory entitlement to learning for all pupils. It determines the content of what is taught and sets attainment targets for learning. It also covers how performance will be assessed and reported. Year groups are divided into Key Stages at the end of which there are certain standards that must be achieved.

    National curriculum
The national curriculum is the starting point for planning a school curriculum that meets the specific needs of new arrivals. One of the four main purposes of the national curriculum is to establish pupils’ entitlement ‘irrespective of social background, culture, race, gender, differences in ability and disabilities’. Meeting the needs of all pupils is one of the greatest challenges facing schools. ‘Some of these pupils experience barriers to learning as a result of their ethnicity, social group, race or culture. Research has proved that children from lower socio-economic backgrounds and/or specific ethnic and social groups are more likely to underachieve at school. This may lead to disaffection, low self-esteem, marginalisation by others and, in some cases, formal exclusion from school’ ( Transforming secondary education , DfES, 2001).

Cadbury's involvement with education is part of its heritage. It can be traced back to when we first moved to the Bournville site in 1879 and George Cadbury introduced the first employee and community education programmes. Today our commitment to education remains as strong as ever in supporting the aim of raising the achievement levels of young people as an investment for the future. Continuing the Cadbury traditions of involvement with education within our own communities, we have a School Links programme working with designated schools and colleges around company sites, with many staff acting as co-opted school governors. Our activities also include sponsorship of a number of local "Cadbury Time" out-of-school clubs, reading volunteers, head teacher mentoring and support for Young Enterprise at all levels. We are working with education at a national level through our series of educational resource packs, designed, planned and prepared in consultation with teachers, to support the National Curriculum, plus our fact sheets to help with student projects.
