Response to the consultation on the review of the national curriculum in England PHYSICAL EDUCATION July 1999
SUMMARY
  • In general, we welcome the revised curriculum, which has a more easily understandable format than the 1995 orders and the inclusion of level descriptions.
  • Overall the proposals fail to indicate sufficiently, that dance as an art form has its own language, body of knowledge and understanding.
  • The language for the individual dance activity area is often unhelpful and at times conceptually unsound. It requires considerable amendment and re-writing to make clear that composing, performing and appreciating are central to teaching and learning in dance.
  • We welcome the inclusion of dance as a compulsory activity at KS1 and KS2. However its optional status at KS3 will only reinforce gender stereotypes. i.e. there will be no encouragement to provide more access to dance for boys. It will continue to restrict progression routes into GCSE Dance and Performing Arts for large numbers of pupils.
  • We fully support the flexibility of two activity areas at KS4. This will allow schools to teach to their strengths and enable them to respond to the interests of their pupils.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. What preconceptions do your pupils hold about the Second World War and about German people? How far have these been influenced by home background, by personal experience, by film, by sport, by the Key Stage 2 history curriculum? Paul Coman argues that the last of these deserves greater attention, at the level of both policy and practice. Analysing the perceptions of Year 6 pupils, he calls for a more detailed examination of the German wartime context within school history. The 1987-92 Conservative government was heavily involved in shaping the History National Curriculum for England and Wales. Commentators quickly highlighted an agenda that was, in part at least, ideological. Goodson' depicted a government fighting a rearguard action in defence of a British national identity which they saw as threatened by the process of Europeanisation within a global economy. Goodson' understood Conservatives to believe that National Curriculum History could 'revive and refocus national identity and ideology.' To this end, the government was eager to emphasise knowledge of British achievements within History.

    Foundation Curriculum
The foundation stage begins when children have reached the age of 3, and starts in the nursery.
The foundation stage curriculum is organised into six areas of learning:
    • Personal, social and emotional development
    • Communication, language and literacy
    • Mathematical development
    • Knowledge and understanding of the world
    • Physical development
    • Creative development
In each area there are specific statements related to that area of learning, called Early Learning Goals. Children are expected to achieve the Early Learning Goals by the end of the foundation stage (by the time they finish in reception class aged 5). Whenever children start the foundation stage, they will have had a range of different experiences. They will have already learned a great deal, particularly from their parents, family and pre-school experiences. Teachers will work with parents and children assessing their needs and monitoring their progress, and identifying any particular difficulties and areas of strength. Teachers in the nursery and reception classes work closely together to provide the children with a well-planned and resourced curriculum, to take their learning forward and provide opportunities for all children to succeed, in a safe setting where they can feel valued.

Learning to Teach Citizenship in the Secondary Schools is intended to provide pre-service and in-service teachers preparing to implement a citizenship curriculum education about citizenship , the factual understanding of history, government and political process; education through citizenship , experiential learning generally defined as a service learning component; and education for citizenship Chapter 4, Citizenship and Pastoral Care, highlights a traditional part of the British education curriculum that is familiar in many countries but generally unspoken in the United States until recently under the guise of character education. The British system is concerned with the development of the whole child including the moral responsibility of the teacher in loco parentis education through citizenship and education for citizenship strands discussed earlier.

    INTRODUCTION
This website now includes examples of pupils' work with ICT across a range of subjects, with teacher commentary on how the use of ICT enhanced learning in the subject. The work exemplifies the requirements to use ICT in subject teaching. As a general requirement, teachers should provide pupils with opportunities to apply and develop their ICT capability in all subjects (except physical education and the non-core foundation subjects at key stage 1). For each subject, these translate into specific, statutory requirements to use ICT in subject teaching*. You can search for examples of pupils' work with ICT by choosing 'Using ICT' in Search . Also, on each subject page, 'ICT learning' links to examples of pupils' work. For each subject, there is guidance on:
    • ICT learning This page describes appropriate uses of ICT for learning, with direct links to examples of pupils' work with ICT. It also provides subject-specific descriptions of how ICT enhances learning. ICT statutory requirements This page lists the statutory requirements to use ICT in the programme of study.
