The next fifteen year of the Regiment's history were to be dominated by action against the French. The first campaign was in Egypt in 1801 where after a successful assault landing the 42nd fought with great distinction at the Battle of Alexandria, capturing the Colour of Napoleon's "Invincible" Legion. For it s gallantry, the Regiment won the honour of bearing the Sphinx on its Colours and badge.
Ticonderoga
No fewer than ten battle honours were awarded to the Regiment for its part in the continued fight against Napoleon's armies during the six years of the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal. It was committed early, for in 1809 it took part in Sir John Moore's grueling winter retreat through the mountains to Corunna, where it played a prominent part in the action covering the embarkation. The following year another Battalion of the Regiment joined the Duke of Wellington's Army and was present at many of his famous victories including the final one a Toulouse in France in April 1814. By the end of that battle less than sixty men of the Battalion remained unwounded.

Sweden, Prussia, and Russia. Three great powers were forged in the fire of the Northern Wars. The military monarchies fed on weaker neighbours where such existed. In the sixteenth century, Poland-Lithuania, Brandenburg and Sweden carved up the small Baltic empire left by the crusading knights of the Teutonic Order. In the eighteenth century, the neighbours devoured the mighty commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania, the largest state ever to disappear from the map of Europe. The partitions of Poland lie beyond the scope of this book, but represent the logical conclusions to a development which started in the second half of the seventeenth century. There exists a large amount of historical research in the languages of the region. So little is available in English, however, that the book under review wisely does not contain any guide to further reading, only a 20-page select bibliography. So this is a welcome addition to the minimal literature in English on the history of northeastern Europe. It is also rewarding for those of us who read some, but not all, of the relevant languages. There is indeed, as it is stated in the introduction, a shortage of synthetic treatments in any language. There is also, it may be added, a shortage of modern treatment of military history in most of the national languages. Most of the extensive literature is quite old, and much of the rest is old-fashioned.

The old canard that French ships were superior, because they were better ‘designed’ is given a final and comprehensive refutation. French ships were designed for very different roles, where speed in ideal conditions was valued above seaworthiness, structural strength and the ability to carry the stores and water for sustained cruising. Occasionally a French prize proved useful, if only to show that larger ships had some advantages, but they were costly to maintain, short-lived and although French designs influenced the design of the Leda class the best British frigates of the period, the

A MILITARY HISTORY AND ATLAS OF THE NAPOLEONIC WARS
by Brigadier General Vincent J. Esposito and Colonel John R. Elting CONTENT:
This superb historical atlas is a seminal work on the Napoleonic Wars and provides a comprehensive overview of the battles and campaigns of Napoleon Bonaparte between 1796 and 1815. With 169 maps charting the course of twelve crucial campaigns and detailing the key phases of such major battles as Marengo, Austerlitz and Borodino, this valuable atlas illustrates the breadth of Napoleon's concept of war, his grasp of strategy and his complete mastery of battlefield tactics. The large, colour maps allow the reader to follow the course of any campaign and highlight the importance of terrain, time and distance. They are complemented by a full narrative history which describes the dramatic military events of the period and their impact on warfare and military thinking. Each successive campaign move is detailed, the strengths of each side are analysed and their errors and failings are also fully examined. The atlas covers Napoleon's Italian campaigns 1796-1797; the Egyptian campaign; Marengo; Austerlitz; Jena; Friedland; the invasion of Spain; the Danube campaign of 1809; the invasion of Russia; the 1813 campaign; the defence of France; and the Hundred Days. An additional Appendix gives biographical details of leading military personalities, and a critical Recommended Reading List assesses hundreds of works on this formative period.

Preface Thank you for taking the time to visit my humble little corner of the Weband welcome to my site's new and hopefully permanent home! This site is dedicated to an in depth study of the uniforms worn by all nations involved in the period known as the Napoleonic Wars. I created it with the intent that it might be of use to fellow military historians and researchers in the field like myself as well as an informative page for students, collectors and wargamers of military miniatures and military re-enactors of the period. A bit about myself! I was born in Jette, a small suburb of Brussels on July 12th, 1949 and am presently living as a Canadian citizen in Canada. I started my interest in military miniatures at age 7 when my Grandfather who was retired Police Chief in Brussels and a military man of rank himself gave me a cigar box filled with the old 54mm William Britains' tin soldiers. I spent hours on end re-fighting battles with my toy cavalry, infantry and a cannon that fired matchsticks from it's barrel with a spring loaded mechanism. In my adolescent years, though I did not have access to military miniatures as I do today and wargaming was still very much in its infancy, I did not lose interest in them and all things historical and military in nature. I would spend hundreds of hours, drawing, colouring and then cutting out and mounting thousands of tiny paper miniature soldiers onto card bases and re-fight ancient, medieval and Napoleonic battles with them. Later, with the advent of photocopy machines my task of creating these armies became easier...

A Military History and Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars
By Vincent J. Esposito and John Elting Review by Fons Libert , FINS Way back in 1986, when I was a young sergeant in the Belgian Army, I got transferred from a combat engineer unit stationed in Germany to the Royal Military Academy of Belgium in Brussels. Because I arrived there in the middle of the S1's (personnel officer) vacation, they did not know where I was supposed to work so told me to keep "busy" for a week or so until he came back. That was easy because the Academy has a nice, big library! In that library there was a big, impressive looking book, placed on a reading pedestal. You could not take it to a table to read it or to make copies or notes, the librarian was very strict about that. All you could do was consult it on the pedestal. It was of course the first edition of A Military History and Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars by Brigadier-General Vincent J. Esposito and Colonel John Elting. I remember being very impressed by this imposing, authoritative book and I spent many hours hovering over it, making notes and studying maps. It was then and there, thanks to this book that I got first interested in the Napoleonic Wars. I have promised myself many times later that I would buy the first second hand copy of this book that I would find, but living in Belgium it never happened. Second hand English books were hard to find here before the Internet made it all so easy.
