In 1966 the Marxist South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that was soon named Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Geography of Namibia
Some 130 million years ago a super continent known as Gondwana tore asunder and left the southern continents we know today as relics. Namibia once locked in the very heart of Gondwana, now lay on the western littoral of Africa. When the fireworks from the throes of continental separation subsided, large volcanoes survived as mountains, like the Brandberg and Spitzkop. From that time and before Namibia has ghost rivers left behind when the ice age glaciers crawled across the land, it has the tracks of dinosaurs embedded in sandstone where they once walked and the coast which originated simultaneously with the Atlantic ocean when primordial forces changed the face of the planet. and Caprivi . Almost half the size of Lebanon, the Etosha Pan is big enough to be classified as a saline desert. Granite mountains stand isolated like steep islands on the plains of the inner Namib, one of them - the Brandberg massif - the highest in Namibia at a height of 2579m. The only perennial rivers are on Namibia's borders. In the north are the Kunene, Kavango, Zambezi and Kwando Rivers. On the southern border is the Orange River. None of the perennial rivers originate in Namibia. Rivers within the country - even the longest, the 600km Fish - are all ephemeral. They flow only after strong rains in their catchments, not necessarily along their entire lengths and not for long. The bigger ones retain water in pools for some months after a flood, but the rest are dry with white sandy bottoms for most of the year

Republic of Namibia - The jewel of Africa
One of the youngest democracies in the world that included protection of environment in its constitution, country of desolate Namib Desert , famous Etosha National park with its abundant wildlife, enormous and magnificent Fish River Canyon Swakopmund - small Bavarian-style German town on the edge of Namib and cold Atlantic ocean that remains almost unchanged since the beginning of the century, peaceful land of old traditions, ancient tribes and modern infrastructure.
Namibia has always been a country of superlatives. Dragon's Breath is the largest subterranean lake in the world, Hoba meteorite is the biggest ever found, Gibeon meteorite shower is the largest ever discovered, Namib Desert is the oldest desert and it is also the only desert in the world that harbours elephant, lion, giraffe and rhino. Red sand dunes at Sossusvlei are regarded as being the highest in the world. Namib desert is also home to one of the oldest living fossil plants, the Welwitschia mirabilis Namibia has the largest free-roaming cheetah population in the world an estimated 2 500. And there is more.

Welcome to MET Search Atlas of Namibia Project This project began in mid-1999 with the aim of compiling and publishing an atlas that will cover all aspects of Namibia's geography. Two major products were generated by the Project:
  • A new atlas of Namibia, published in 2002 provides a basic reference on the geography of the country, including social, demographic, economic, infrastructural, physical, climatic and biological features. It emphasizes environmental potentials and constraints important for the country’s sustainable development, and was designed and written to reach as wide an audience as possible. The data used in compiling the book have been made available, with accompanying metadata.
Information used in the compilation of the maps is as up to date as possible. Specialists from a variety of fields were drawn into the Project, generously contributing their data and knowledge in the interests of producing an accurate and well-rounded national atlas. Some maps provide fresh insights into the country’s resources, since they have been produced from sets of data compiled for the first time.
