63. An Introduction To Namibia

http://www.geographia.com/namibia/
Exploring Namibia Exploring Namibia Africa Homepage Geographia Home Introduction Namibia is a technicolor dreamscape, a land of swirling apricot dunes and shimmering white flats, mirages and dust devils, black-faced impala and crimson-breasted shrike. Its major game park, which centers on the Great Etosha Pan, offers an exceptional range and abundance of wildlife and a landscape that could not provide a more striking backdrop for it. The coastal region is one of the world's most captivating desert regions, and in the south lies a canyon second in magnificence only to the Grand Canyon itself.
Location, Geography, Climate Namibia has four primary geographic regions, all of which are of great interest to the adventure traveller. In the north lies the Etosha Pan, an enormous alluvial basin that has long since lost the lake that it once held. Although water supplies are now limited for most of the year to the perimeter of the pan, the area remains sufficiently fertile to support great herds of antelope species (including gemsbok, impala, and springbok), zebra, andmost famouslyelephants. Many other species of wildlife abound as well, and the Etosha Pan is now the center of one of the finest game parks on the African continent.

Namibian Geography
The Geography of Namibia
Some 130 million years ago a super continent known as Gondwana tore asunder and left the southern continents we know today as relics. Namibia once locked in the very heart of Gondwana, now lay on the western littoral of Africa. When the fireworks from the throes of continental separation subsided, large volcanoes survived as mountains, like the Brandberg and Spitzkop . From that time and before Namibia has ghost rivers left behind when the ice age glaciers crawled across the land, it has the tracks of dinosaurs embedded in sandstone where they once walked and the coast which originated simultaneously with the Atlantic ocean when primordial forces changed the face of the planet. With its surface area of 824,268sqkm, Namibia is a vast country, it's more than three times the size of Great Britain and twice that of Germany. It is situated on the south-western Atlantic coast of the African sub continent, bordering on Angola, Botswana and South Africa. In the far north-east is the Caprivi strip, an elongated pan handle consisting of tropical riverine swamp lands also bordered by Zimbabwe and Zambia. Namibia can be divided into four distinct topographical regions. Of these the most definitive in the Namib Desert from which Namibia derives its name. It is one of the oldest deserts in the world, maybe the very oldest, the Namib was already arid at least 80 million years ago. The

Namibia is situated between the Cunene and Kavango Rivers forming part of Angola’s border in the north and the Orange River, which demarcates South Africa’s border in the south, with Botswana forming its eastern boundary and the cold waters of the Atlantic washing the countries western shore. Caprivi, Namibia`s odd colonial appendage, thrusts east from the north-eastern corner of the country touching Zambia and Zimbabwe on the Zambezi River at its easternmost extremity. The Caprivi however lends some degree of agricultural autonomy to an otherwise desert wasteland. There is a large wild game population which screams for international protection; it is receiving some attention although not quite in a way deserving of applause by ethnic Namibians.
