home safari guide site map airfares Namibia is dominated by the coastal Namib desert which hosts an extraordinary range of hauntingly beautiful landscapes, as well as some of the world's most intriguing flora and fauna. These plants and animals have adapted in ingenious ways to survive the rigours of the desert. To the north and east of the sandy wilderness lie rocky deserts with moonscapes, and dry thornveld savanna. Unusual weather conditions prevail along the coast where desert air meets the cold moist air of the Antarctic Benguela current. The resultant mist and fog in the early mornings sustains a wide variety of desert life. The Skeleton Coast is the treacherous stretch of coastline to the north of Swakopmund scene of innumerable shipwrecks The Skeleton Coast National Park has three zones. The southern half is the public area of the national park focused around Terrace Bay and its accommodation, which is used predominantly on self-drive safaris. The northern zone from Mowe Bay northwards is a totally private concession within the National Park, while the extreme north of the park is the research area. Between Mowe Bay and the research area is about 200,000 hectares of incredible countryside, which is totally isolated and private. This is the area in which we will be operating and where we spent all four nights at the site of our new camp called Skeleton Coast Camp. The cold Benguela Current travels all the way up from Antarctica and brings plankton rich waters to this coastline - along with massive amounts of fish. The real bonus though, is that this current also moderates the temperatures. We were in the middle of the desert in the height of mid-summer and the temperatures never rose above 28 degrees C. At night we could snuggle into our duvets and sleep soundly and comfortably. This is normal for this time of year!! For five days we were cool and comfortable, which makes this is an incredible safari destination........all year round.

Resources Lessons Plans Help Learning Communities Return to Water in africa.Water and culture. by Mark Schwartz, Tsumkwe Region, namibia

Water and Culture
by Mark Schwartz , Tsumkwe Region, Namibia The San ("bushman") culture is renowned for its ability to preserve natural resources, especially water. I have seen traditional water containers made from ostrich eggshells (used by the traditional hunters when they were a nomadic, hunting/gathering society). Unfortunately, the present generation of San in my community is no longer hunter/gatherer; their appreciation of water extends as far as whether or not it comes out of the tap. The rural villagers express concern for water mainly when there are problems with the water pump or when an elephant tears down the windmill. The government-controlled "Rural Water Supply" agency is responsible for the boreholes which supply water to the community. Although the people have a great appreciation for water, it is not expressed through ceremonyat least, as far as I know. by Deirdre Deakyne , Onambutu Village, Namibia Water is a big problem in Namibia. The country is very, very drythe driest country south of the Sahara. If rain does not fall, the people suffer. The people in my village are very conscious about their water resources. One of my teachers gave me this song which young children sing about water: In Osmkwanyama: Omeve oku li po afi mana (2x)
Tukufe omeva (3x)
Tulikosheni.

Each day was packed with activities such as visiting museums and important cultural areas. We visited Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa and Windhoek, Namibia. We also travelled to Etosha game park in Namibia. Below are a few highlights of our 12-day trip.
The courtroom at the new Constitutional Court in Johannesburg, showing nine of the eleven bench fronts. That's Margaret, one of our delegation, taking a closer look at the simple majesty of the hide coverings. The lighting in the building is natural as is the air-conditioning (using an ancient form of air chambers dug beneath the building the technique actually works well). The bricks from which the walls are made come from an old prison, so that no-one will forget the problems associated with inequality and oppression. Country Info Namibia Introduction Namibia General Data Namibia Maps Namibia Culture ... Namibia Time and Date Namibia Culture Back to Top Namibian cultures are various. Just as the culture of the Afrikaners differs remarkablely from that of the German-speaking community and as both of those cultures differ from that of the more varied technical-assistance community, so do African and Creole cultures differ. The Rehobothers closely resemble the rural Afrikaner culture of the mid-20th century, while the Nama have more in common with the other pastoral black communities, and the “Cape Coloured” have a distinct urban culture with both black and European elements. The northern black cultures—while typical as to language and forms of music and dance—formed out of a mixed farming context unlike that of the Damara and Herero. The San are a tragic case. Their culture was ruined by ranch serfdom and wartime exploitation as trackers, and efforts to rebuild from the fragments have been limited by deficiency of knowledge, resources, and space as well as by the paternalism of many of their self-appointed “guardians.” With the exception of the San, Namibian cultures appear to be alive and evolving, not least in the urban areas. rising unemployment may lead to the breakdown of neighbourhood and other social groupings and to the anomie and lawlessness that characterize the townships of many southern African cities, notably in both Zambia and South Africa. The black cultures are not well supported by formal institutions or the government, owing both to doubts as to what would enable rather than smother their development and to a deficiency of fiscal resources.

DAVE BAITY
GASTONIA, NORTH CAROLINA - Mark Howe had to go halfway around the world to gain a real appreciation of the cows he helped tend as a youngster on his family farm.
He escaped the daily early morning milking when he graduated from Ashbrook High in 1992 and entered N.C. State University. But the chore was always waiting when he returned.
In early 2000, the Peace Corps assigned him to teach math at a school in Gobabis, Namibia. After 10 weeks of training on how to create lesson plans, manage classrooms and speak a bit of Otjiherero, he settled to the task of trying to make basic algebra and geometry relevant to eighth- through 10th-graders who shared his farm background.

Politics in Namibia
The grandfatherly figure of Sam Nujoma enjoys widespread devotion for actions such as volunteering over weekends to labour on the construction of a railway line to the Angolan border. However, there has also been dissatisfaction at extravagant government spending such as the alleged N$ 500 million being spent on the construction of a new State House, while old age and disability pensions are a pitiful N$250 per month. Can President-elect Pohamba be his own man?

The coastal regions of Namibia were explored by the Dutch and Portuguese in the 15th century, by the English in the 18th century and by German missionaries in the 1840s. In 1884, the German government claimed the settlement at Luderitz as the center of a protectorate which extended over the whole of what is Namibia, then known as South West Africa. A major uprising in 1908 by two of the indigenous tribes, the Nama and Herero, was put down by the Germans at the cost of 100,000 lives.
During World War I, the territory was occupied by the South Africans, who were granted a League of Nations mandate to administer the territory after the end of the war. The history of Namibia from the foundation of the United Nations in 1945 to independence in 1991 was dominated by the repeated refusal of the South African government to convert their League of Nations mandate to administer the country into a UN trusteeship, or indeed to recognize that the UN, or any other organization, had a legitimate interest in the region.
In 1977, the five Western members of the Security Council began negotiations aimed at bringing about the implementation of Resolution 435, providing for UN supervised elections. Progress was very slow but, in 1988, the South Africans and Cubans agreed to withdraw their troops from Angola (see
