Swakopmund Culture S wakopmund. Namibia's seaside resort on the west coast is a place of singular charm, and resembles a small Bavarian village nestling between the desert and the sea. It has a restful and relaxing atmosphere with promenades, palm trees and beautifully tended public gardens. The particular attraction of the town lies in the fact that one can enjoy the wild beauty of the desert and the sea and yet be within easy reach of the solid comfort of Swakopmund's hotels, pensions and restaurants. The source of Swakopmund's continental atmosphere is the graceful art nouveau building. Eleven of these charming old buildings are national monuments. There is plenty to see and do. Tour operators offer tours featuring the unique landscapes of the Namib. There is sheltered bathing at Palm Beach, the town has an Olympic-sized, heated indoor swimming pool, and a grassed golf course in a desert setting. The tannery, which manufacturers the well known kudu leather shoes, can be visited, as well as the local brewery which produces some of Namibia's fine beers. The Swakopmund Museum captures the colourful past and also highlights the desert flora and fauna, as well as the marine life, of the area. Accommodation is available in hotels, bungalows and a caravan park, as well as comfortable pensions. Swakopmund was of major significance as a harbour during the German colonial era, although the water at the coast is actually too shallow and a protected bay is missing. But Luederitz was too far away and the seaport of Walvis Bay was a British possession, later in South African hands. Only today it belongs to Namibia.

Windhoek - History Millions of years ago a dinosaur walked across a stretch of mud. Namibia has a colourful and turbulent history. In the mid-19th century, German missionaries opened up the interior, paving the way for traders who came later. The annexation of the country by Germany in 1884 accounts for the distinctive German architecture and traditions.
After a turbulent past, the country at last became independent on 21 March 1990, and is now peacefully approaching the twenty-first century became independent in 1990, when South Africa's control was finally diminished by the United Nations and the guerrilla group known as SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization.) Germany controlled the area until World War I, when South Africa invaded the colony and imposed 75 years of rule. The German influence, their language, architecture, and sense of organization, is still evident, particularly in the country's superior infrastructure, and the restaurants in Windhoek. While the new nation still depends on South Africa for some foodstuff (and wines) the local ranching, fishing industries and mining are productive, along with growing tourism. The desert terrain is good for Precambrian fossils, and scientists from Yale and the American Museum of Natural History explore the limestone deposits of Namibia on an annual basis.

Chapter Three People and Culture PEOPLE The population Statistics indicate that the average life expectancy for a Namibian is 65 years. Around 86% of the population are black African in origin, and the remaining 14% are mostly of European or mixed race. However, the statistics say nothing of the charm of many Namibians, and if you venture into the rural areas you will often find that Namibians are curious about you. Chat to them openly and you will find most Namibians to be delightful. They will be pleased to help you where they can, and as keen to help you learn about them and their country as they are interested in your lifestyle and what brings you to their country. Languages Appendix 2 for useful local phrases. Ethnic groups When the colonial powers carved up Africa, the divisions between the countries bore virtually no resemblance to the traditional areas of the various ethnic groups, many of which therefore ended up split between two or more countries. As you will see, there are cultural differences between the groups in different parts of Namibia, but they are only a little more pronounced than those between the states of the USA, or the regions of the (relatively tiny) UK. In Namibia, which is typical of any large African country, historians identify over ten ethnic groups. The main ones are detailed below, arranged alphabetically. Apart from Afrikaans, their languages fall into the two main families mentioned in

History Namibia's first inhabitants were the Bushmen (Sands). The rock paintings in Daramaland bear witness to this period. Around 1300, the Namas and the Damaras came from the north pushing the Bushmen towards the Kalahari Desert. Around 1500, the Owambos settled on the high plateaus and in the Okavongo delta. Around 1600, Herero herdsmen arrived from the north. With the beginning of German migration from 1850 onwards, Germany annexed Namibia and in 1884 made war on the local ethnic groups.

This is therefore a truly revolutionary era for South Africa as it passes from its European past into an African future that includes all its citizens. Cape Town , where the program will be based, lies at the tip of Africa where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. It is the oldest city in the country and arguably one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world, lying on the lower slopes of the breathtaking Table Mountain. Namibia Plants and Animal Back to Top Through the 1970s Namibia’s wildlife was vulnerable to high levels of poaching by the nation’s rural inhabitants, who needed both the food that wild animals provided and the money from their skins. In the 1980s the government hit upon a creative solution for the problem. The administration began employing people from local communities to scout for and report poachers and, later, to act as guides for tourists all within close range of their homes. Namibia Culture Back to Top Namibian cultures are various. Just as the culture of the Afrikaners differs remarkablely from that of the German-speaking community and as both of those cultures differ from that of the more varied technical-assistance community, so do African and Creole cultures differ. The Rehobothers closely resemble the rural Afrikaner culture of the mid-20th century, while the Nama have more in common with the other pastoral black communities, and the “Cape Coloured” have a distinct urban culture with both black and European elements. The northern black cultures—while typical as to language and forms of music and dance—formed out of a mixed farming context unlike that of the Damara and Herero. The San are a tragic case. Their culture was ruined by ranch serfdom and wartime exploitation as trackers, and efforts to rebuild from the fragments have been limited by deficiency of knowledge, resources, and space as well as by the paternalism of many of their self-appointed “guardians.”
