This case study focuses on the experience of a Black woman who returned to school for her General Education Diploma (GED) certificate after 32 years away from formal schooling. Through the reflections of Montana and her social network, six women who supported her during and after the GED exam, we are able to see the way in which Montana changes the network and herself over time. We are also able to see some of the ways in which Montana positively affects her children and husband through her pursuit of the GED. The 11 interviews reveal the themes of improved literacy skills, heightened confidence, community activism, and youth leadership, as Montana circulates in her community and congregation a year after the GED. It is also possible to glean from the study the kind of opportunities that adult literacy educators may create by involving a student's social network in the active support of increased literacy skills at the GED level.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. GENERAL CROOK AND THE WESTERN FRONTIER Charles M. Robinson III University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 2001. Illustrations, maps, notes, bibliography, index. xix + 386 pp. $39.95. Charles M. Robinson notes that when the Oglala chief Red Cloud learned of the death of Major General George Crook, the elderly chief remembered his former enemy with a simple statement: "He, at least, never lied to us" (p. 311). It would seem a fitting tribute, reflecting the image of Crook as a benevolent conqueror that survives to this day. Yet in General Crook and the Western Frontier, Robinson argues that Crook's endearing image is largely the result of careful cultivation by the general and literary representations by former comrades and historians following his death in 18,9o. Robinson, attempting to break with this tradition, presents a slightly altered interpretation of Crook by exploring his evolution from a soldier charged with destroying Native cultures into a crusader for the reform of federal Indian policies in the late nineteenth century.

The Wild Rockies Field Institute's mission is to offer academically rigorous, field-based courses that:
  • Broaden the nature of a liberal arts education Teach critical thinking about social and environmental issues Foster understanding of and respect for natural and human communities Cultivate a sense of place that encourages personal, social and environmental responsibility
WRFI was founded in 1993 by several instructors at the University of Montana who felt that education about ecological processes and relationships, as well as land management policy and human relationships with the land, could be more deeply and honestly explored on site, in the field.
ACADEMICS IN THE NATURAL WORLD
Academics is the primary focus of WRFI courses. Our courses seek to understand the complex relationship between ecological processes and human actions. To varying degrees within each course, we study local ecology, policies that dictate land management, and ethics that determine our relationship to the land. We promote rigorous interdisciplinary learning through a diversity of readings, discussions and experiences. On our courses, you will have the opportunity to question local land managers, survey impacted ecosystems, and explore alternative philosophies for living on the land. We will encourage you to integrate your knowledge and experiences and to identity the connections between issues in ways that go beyond the boundaries of traditional education.
