Board policy: The Montana University System is committed to facilitating the ease of undergraduate student transfer to its campuses, particularly in the area of general education.  Therefore, all campuses of the Montana University System will recognize the integrity of general education programs and courses offered by units of the Montana University System and the three publicly-supported community colleges and the seven tribal colleges in Montana. To ensure adequate student preparation for transfer, campuses will exclude any courses from their general education program that are remedial or developmental in nature.  Examples would include Introductory or Intermediate Algebra, Reading Improvement, Vocabulary Building, and so on. The Montana Board of Regents has adopted four (4) important procedures to implement the intent of this policy.  Those procedures are set out below. Procedures: The Block Transfer Procedure.

Background
The Montana Board of Public Instruction held a meeting on July 17, 2002 to, among other things, identify potential goals for a 5-year strategic plan. The meeting involved the participation of state board members, the chief state school officer, legislators, and representatives from the lieutenant governor, higher education, local school boards, teacher unions, school administrators, and others. Following is an outline of the potential goals to be included in the 5-year strategic plan, general objectives and issues to be considered, partners interested in working with the board to refine these goals, and a timeline for completing the strategic plan.

SALISH KOOTENAI COLLEGE -– and -– The UNIVERSITY of MONTANA - WESTERN Elementary Education Two + Two Program Salish Kootenai College (Pablo, MT) and The University of Montana – Western (Dillon, MT) have joined forces to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education to residents of the Flathead Indian Reservation of Montana. The purpose of the program is to make a professional teacher training program available to those individuals living on the reservation and to attempt to address shortages of Native American teachers throughout Montana and across the US.
TARGET AUDIENCE
SKC graduates holding Associate of Science (2 + 2) Teacher Training degrees. PROGRAM COMPONENTS – individuals hoping to successfully complete the SKC/UMW program will: q Complete the Associate of Science (2+2) Teacher Training degree at Salish Kootenai College which includes courses equivalent to ED 120, ED253, ED258, and ED383. q Complete an admissions file at UM-Western (requirements listed below*) q Successfully complete (no grade lower than “B”) required professional education courses through UM-Western listed below.
