Geography Geographic Center of the U.S.
Source: U.S. Geological Survey, Dept. of the Interior There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center and no uniform method for determining it. Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. A monument was erected in Lebanon, KS, the conterminous U.S. center, by a group of citizens. A cairn in Rugby, ND, marks the center of the North American continent. The geography of Political Control. Virginia City, montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory)
http://www.virginiacity.com/hv07.htm
The Geography of Political Control Virginia City, Montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory) which has been the center of many and various conflicts. As the Civil War began in 1861, that land was in Dakota Territory, and the capitol which controlled it was Yankton, D.T., 2,500 miles away by trail. That amounts to no political control at all. In 1915, Al Noyes copied material from a register that has since disappeared. He preserved the lost documents in his history. "We find another matter that is peculiar. On the 4th day of April, 1863, a deed was given by David Thompson, et al., to James D. Doty, all in Idaho Territory. On the Fifth day of April, 1863, a deed was given by John Ault, to Jack Allport, all in Dakota Territory. There must have been some misunderstanding as to what particular portion of the United States they were in." (From Noyes, Alva J. (Al). A History of Southern Montana, State Publishing: Helena, 1915) The cause of that glitch, reported by Noyes, was Lincoln's solution to the lack of his ability to control of the strategic flow of gold from the Oro Fino area of mines on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. The gold was vulnerable to being diverted to the South. There it could support the war efforts of the Confederate States. The gold fields were in Washington Territory on the west of the mountains. Those gold fields in 1862 were seven hundred miles from the capitol, Yakima, Washington Territory. President Lincoln's solution was to slice out the area including the gold fields. This he combined with part of Dakota Territory, including what was to become Virginia City. In April 1863, Congress established Idaho Territory, with the capitol very near the gold, in Lewiston, I.T. Now the gold fields could be controlled by the local Territorial Government in favor of Lincoln's war efforts.

    Special Issue on Urban Geography
    Themes in American Urban Geography
ABSTRACT [from 1st page of introduction to thisSpecial Issue] Geography provides a unique perspective on the modern American city, as the essays in this issue of the Geographical Review show. By offering assessments of the social and cultural geography of the modern urban scene, the essays display geographical analysis at its best. They exemplify the innovative explorations currently under way as geographers practice their craft, as they ask both traditional and unorthodox questions about the surrounding urban scene of daily life. The essays demonstrate some of the ways in which geographers contribute to both academic and informed popular dialogue on the sociocultural evolution of American cities. Key words: urbanization, urban geography, social and cultural geography, United States cities.
