    Mission
    The mission of the Montana State University-Billings College of Technology is to be the College of first choice, dedicated to the development of workforce capacity by providing top quality learning opportunities and services to meet a variety of career choices and customer needs by being responsive, flexible and market-driven.
    History
    In 1969, the Montana State Legislature created the Billings Vocational-Technical Education Center (BVTC) to serve the postsecondary technical training needs of adults. In 1987, by order of the Legislature, governance passed from the Billings School District to the Montana University System Board of Regents, making the BVTC one of five campuses of the Montana University System for postsecondary vocational-technical education. In 1994, the BVTC officially merged with Eastern Montana College to become the fifth college of Montana State University-Billings. The merger and subsequent sharing of resources brought about new and improved student services, such as cooperative education, health services, career services, fee payment options, and credit transferability.
    Nature of the Institution
    The training programs offered at the College of Technology are continually upgraded to meet the changing dynamics of business and industry. Presently, 11 Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs, two Associate of Arts (AA) programs, 3 Associate of Science (AS) programs and 10 certificate

    Education Montanans are fortunate to have some of the best students and teachers in America. In fact, our eighth graders earned the top scores in the country in the science portion of a recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) evaluation. They placed second in the math section. These latest scores build on a history of outstanding performances on national exams. Our hard-working, high-quality teachers are the key to these successes; their dedication to their profession and to our children drives our education system. Moreover, our students' high test scores are a good sign that Montana's students are being prepared to meet the challenges they will face in the new millennium. When it comes to education, though, we can never rest on our laurels. We have to continuously work together to strengthen our education system. During my time in the Senate, I have been proud to be involved in efforts that have invested more money in our schools to reduce class sizes, improve school facilities, and attract high quality teachers. We all know a strong education system is the base of a healthy economy, and investing in our education system will lead to a stronger Montana economy and more jobs. That's why I continue to actively support Montana's education system in Congress.

By GreatSchools.net Staff The word "public" in public school refers to the fact that it is the citizens themselves who control the public schools. In most states, they do this in part by electing a school board ofdepending on the size and configuration of the districtthree, five or seven members who must be residents of the school district. The most important thing a school board does is to establish a vision for the community's schools that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employee unions, approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.

    Background
    The Montana Board of Public Instruction held a meeting on July 17, 2002 to, among other things, identify potential goals for a 5-year strategic plan. The meeting involved the participation of state board members, the chief state school officer, legislators, and representatives from the lieutenant governor, higher education, local school boards, teacher unions, school administrators, and others. Following is an outline of the potential goals to be included in the 5-year strategic plan, general objectives and issues to be considered, partners interested in working with the board to refine these goals, and a timeline for completing the strategic plan.

    Montana Financial Education Coalition gains momentum
    By Sue Woodrow A coalition formed by a diverse group of organizations is quickly gaining momentum in its efforts to promote financial education in Montana. The Montana Financial Education Coalition (MFEC)—a recently established nonprofit corporation and an affiliate of the National Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy (Jump$tart)—has grown dramatically in a short time. Just a year and a half ago, a handful of people sat around a table in Bozeman discussing a shared belief that all Montanans should have access to the training and resources they need to make informed choices about their finances. That discussion has since blossomed into an initiative that currently involves more than 20 organizations and counting, with the goal of bringing all financial education providers in Montana together as MFEC partners. One year ago, the participants from that original discussion convened representatives of nearly 40 organizations from all corners of Montana for a financial education focus group. They talked about the critical need to promote financial education in the state and discussed potential solutions for meeting the need. Members were unanimous in support of forming a statewide coalition to help organizations across Montana promote financial education programs of all kinds, such as K-12 curricula, financial counseling for adults, first-time homebuyer education and retirement planning.
