He succeeded his lifelong friends Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the nation's highest office. Monroe was a man of good intelligence, sound judgment, and highest integrity. In more than 40 years of public service, he never stinted of his energies in doing what he considered his public duty. Monroe was president during the “Era of Good Feelings.” It was called that because there were few political battles and his

MONROE, JAMES
, fifth president of the United States. Monroe, who succeeded James Madison as president of the United States in 1817, was the last of the dynasty of Virginia presidents that began with Thomas Jefferson in 1801. Much of Monroe's career was closely associated with his two presidential predecessors. After reading law with Jefferson, he retained close ties with his mentor, and through Jefferson, he became friends with Madison. Jefferson's and Madison's more brilliant minds, broader interests, and greater impact on their times have overshadowed Monroe's place in the history of the early Republic. Nevertheless, he achieved a high degree of success in public life and enjoyed wide popularity. For Monroe politics was a consuming interest; he was a pragmatic man keenly sensitive to political currents. As Jefferson's retirement from office approached, Monroe allowed his name to be brought forward by Virginia friends as an opponent to Madison for the Republican nomination for president in 1808. Despite Monroe's differences with Madison, Jefferson succeeded in keeping the circle of friendship from being permanently broken, and in 1811 President Madison brought Monroe into his cabinet as secretary of state. For a time during the War of 1812, Monroe also acted as secretary of war. Harry Ammon

James Monroe was the fifth president of the United States (1817-1825). He is perhaps best known for establishing the foreign policy principle that came to bear his name, the Monroe Doctrine. He is also the person for whom Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, was named. Liberia is an African country founded by freed American slaves. Monroe, a slave owner, supported their repatriation (return to their place of origin) to Africa. Before becoming president, Monroe spent many years in public service, both domestically and overseas, and was the first president to have been a U.S. senator. Although he studied law under Thomas Jefferson, he was not as brilliant as some other leading members of the Revolutionary generation. But his contemporaries liked and admired him for his sensible judgment, his honesty, and his personal kindness. Like his fellow Founding Fathers and fellow Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, he died on July 4, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the nation's official birthday.

The archaeological study clearly indicated that James Monroe's beginnings were humble. The family resided in a small four room, rough cut wooden farm house with few outbuildings on a 500 acre farm filled with wetlands. In 2001 Susan Nelson-Warren Byrd Landscape Architects of Charlottesville were commissioned by the County of Westmoreland, Virginia to prepare a master plan for a multi-phase development of James Monroe's Birthplace site. The county's desire was to create a unique, economical, and attractive park that celebrates the birth and life of our nation's fifth president under the 2nd U.S. Constitution, James Monroe, while providing passive recreation for the local residents.

5th President JAMES MONROE Born: April 28, 1758, in Westmoreland County, Va. Died: July 4, 1831, in New York City. Career: College dropout, volunteer in the Revolutionary Army, rising to the rank of major. Student of law (under Thomas Jefferson). Virginia assemblyman, U.S. senator, Ambassador to France, governor of Virginia, Secretary of State and Secretary of War (serving simultaneously during the War of 1812). Personal Life: At 28, Monroe married the beautiful daughter of a wealthy New York merchant. In personal matters, he was often dominated by his wife and his 2 elegant daughters, who put on aristocratic airs and were known as notorious snobs. They spent Monroe's money so freely that he was in serious financial difficulty when he died. His Person: A 6-footer with a broad chest, a finely sculptured nose, and gentle blue-gray eyes, Monroe was said to bear a striking resemblance to George Washington. Elections: By 1816, the Federalist party was in a state of collapse and, as the candidate of the Democratic-Republicans, Monroe swept to an easy electoral victory-183 to 34-over Rufus King. When he ran for reelection in 1820, he was virtually unopposed, and carried the Electoral College 231 to 1. Because of the absence of heated 2-party competition, Monroe's terms were characterized as "The Era of Good Feelings."

    • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.

His father, Spence Monroe, was of Scotch, and his mother, Elizabeth Jones, was of Welsh descent. At the age of sixteen he entered the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, but in 1776 he left college to take part in the War for Independence. He enlisted in the Third Virginia regiment, in which he became a lieutenant, and subsequently took part in the battles of Harlem Heights, White Plains, Trenton (where he was wounded), Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. In November 1777 he was appointed volunteer aide-de-camp to William Alexander ("Lord Stirling"), with the rank of major, and thereby lost his rank in the Continental line; but in the following year, at George Washington 's solicitation, he received a commission as lieutenant-colonel in a new regiment to be raised in Virginia.
