David Woodroffe - Author add to cart view cart Book: Paperback Colin McEvedy's pioneering atlas, revised and expanded for this new edition, treats as one unit the Mediterranean, Europe and the nomads' steppeland to the East (the habitat of Huns, Turks and Mongols). Illuminating maps and lively commentaries present the towns and trade routes, the changing population patterns, the boundaries of Christendom (and later Islam) and the ever-shifting political units. The result is a wonderfully eloquent picture, as Dr. McEvedy puts it, "of how old empires fell and new ones rose, and how, in Europe, a new society emerged which had the energy to break free from the geographical, intellectual and technical limitations that defined the medieval world." Medieval Sourcebook:
[from Walsh] Although Tatar [or Mongol] troops had defeated those of the Russian princes in 1228 this had been only a reconnaissance in force and the Tatars had withdrawn without attempting to follow up the victory. They returned in 1236, however, and within less than four years brought all the Russian principalities, except Novogorod, under their dominion. Tatar control of the Russian lands lasted almost two and one-half centuries and had very important, far-reaching consequences. The following description of the Tatars was written in 1243. [spelling slightly modernized - Halsall] from Richard Hakluyt, The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation. Readings in Russian History , (Syracuse NY: Syracuse University Press, 1948) This text is part of the Internet Medieval Source Book . The Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century, culminating in the subjugation of Baghdad in 1258 and the demise of the Abbasid caliphate, had an enormous impact on large areas of the Islamic world, which now experienced its greatest threat. These conquests were carried out under the command of Hülagü, a grandson of Genghis Khan, who assumed the title Il-Khan, meaning "lesser Khan," a subordinate of the Great (Mongol) Khan in China. The name Il-Khan (or Ilkhanid) is also used to describe the branch of the Mongol dynasty that ruled over Iraq, the Caucasus, parts of Asia Minor, and all of Iran, as far east as Central Asia.

From their capital at Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, the Ilkhanids maintained contact with such disparate cultures as China and Christian Europe, thereby invigorating the Iranian world with new mercantile alliances and fresh artistic influences. Following the death of the last Ilkhanid ruler in 1335, their empire crumbled and was replaced by a number of local dynasties.

Armenia and the Turco-Mongol Invasions
The Turkish invasions and eventual political domination of most parts of the Armenian highlands did not occur at any one date, nor were they accomplished by any one group. Rather, both as the contemporaries noted, and as modern scholars have pointed out, from the early 11th century onward various parts of Asia Minor were subjected to direct attack and to infiltration which accompanied the invasions and settlement of diverse Turkic groups there. Turkish migrations to Asia Minor continued from the 11th through the 15th centuries, a period of approximately 400 years (114).
Turning now to some of the consequences of the Saljuq invasions and domination vis-a-vis the Armenians, a number of tendencies are observable. For the most part the Saljuqs acted as catalysts on phenomena which predated their arrival. One striking example of this is the demographic change observable in central Asia Minor (Cappadocia), northern Mesopotamia and Syria. In the early 11th century, the Byzantine government had followed a policy of removing powerful Armenian lords ( naxarar s) and their dependents from their native Armenian habitats and settling them to [72] the west and southwest (122). Thus Cappadocia and Armenia Minor (

The Medieval period began in Europe with the end of the Dark Age and thus law and order was restored. It lasted from the 11 th century to the 14 th century Europe, which had experienced anarchy during the Dark Age, gradually recovered and built a new culture, which was a combination of the features of the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome, and those of the life of the barbarians. Christianity played an important role in the generation of medieval European civilization, which had several achievements. Feudalism , an organization based on land tenure, was an important feature of this period. During the Middle Ages, there was the growth of a national identity in Europe. Nations like England, France, Hungary, Denmark, Norway and others sprung into being. At this time, guilds were organized in cities and town. The church provided spiritual food to the people and rendered useful social service. Liberal arts were studied and universities were established. A vast mass of literature was produced in Latin and in the vernaculars. New styles of art and architecture developed and much progress was achieved in Science. Thus, during this formative period, Europe and Asia fell victims to the cruel nomadic hordes of the

Was trebuchet effective when doing siege? TGL May 8 2004, 08:23 AM A book I have says the Ayyubid* Dynasty in the 12th Century developed it first, but I have also been told that Chinese invented it first, but have no validation of that. However, apparently it was the Byzantines who gave it ajustable counterweights in the 13th
As far as I know the Trebuchet was very effective. During the Albigensian Crusade a Trebuchet (nicknamed La Malvoisine), help bring a swift victory at the seige of Minerve (by contemporary accounts it was very large, think of it as a medieval Big Bertha). The tactic was inspired, it pounded the cliff face below the town, which also protected those besieged getting water. Eventually it caused the cliff face to collapse, depriving Minerve of water.
Also, the muslims during the crusades used them very well, even turning the besiegers into the besieged with them, However, they weren't alway effective enough. During the siege of Rochester, King John's trebuchet were not working quickly enough. And time was of the essense, his army being completely made up of expensive European mercenaries. So he mined underneathe the fortifications and used the "fat of 40 pigs" to burn down the supports and force the walls to crumble.

Battles are indicated by BOLDFACE type. All dates given are CE or BCE (Common Era or Before Common Era). Every effort has been made to assure the correctness of these dates, and to harmonize them with the current Gregorian calendar. If an event is listed under two dates, the LATER of the two is -probably- the correct Gregorian. Where any date in an Almanac-style source, or an encyclopaedia, has conflicted with a date given by a reputable historian, the historian has been taken as the authoritative source. Sometimes even the historians disagree, so I had to use my best judgement on the matter. Therefore there are no guarantees as to the exact correctness of all of the dates. If you have a better source, or a more accurate date, please let me know, but be so kind as to tell me * why * it is better or more accurate.

The Most Powerful - Cholas
For a period that has come to be so strongly associated with the Islamic influence and rule in India, Medieval Indian history went for almost three whole centuries under so-called indigenous rulers. For the moment, most of action shifts to the southern peninsula. The most important dynasty to rise out of the southern India was that of the Cholas . Unlike most of the other dynasties (the Chalukyas , the Pallavas , the Pandyas or the Rashtrakutas ), their origins are not traced from outside, but very much from the south itself.
