Mrs. Penner, Instructional Librarian
Step 1Understand the Assignment You will make up a medieval identity and write a paper either as or about that person. Your identity should be a person who lived in one of the places and eras that you have studied this term. You will use library research to complement what you have already learned in class and add depth to your portrayal of this "historical figure." This assignment has the following purposes:
  • To familiarize you with library research processes and citation forms. To allow you to further explore a topic that has interested you this term. To help you explore the worldviews and belief systems of those who lived in the past (by attempting to view the events we've learned about through the eyes of those who experienced them.
The Details:
  • Paper of 4 pages, typed, double spaced, 12 pt. font, normal sized margins. Include page numbers on each page. Paper must be stapled.

23. The Turco-Mongol Invasions IV, Medieval Armenian History, Turkish History, Turke
In his mongols in history, JJ Saunders wrote of Timur. His career was asingularly barren one. The great Chingiz at least created an empire that

naxarar/didebul s too were punishednot by Turksbut by their own Mongol overlords. This must be explained by the very nearness of many lords to the Il-Khan court and their great intimacy with its members. Thus in 1289, when Arghun-Khan crushed a plot against him organized by the emir Buqa, he also executed king Demetre of Georgia who had married Buqa's daughter and was, rightly or wrongly, implicated (214). Similarly, when Geikhatu succeeded his brother Arghun as Khan in 1291, he in turn killed off Arghun's prominent supporters, among whom were many Armenians (215).
The reign of Ghazan-Khan (1295-1304) is regarded by Mongol scholars as a watershed, during which important changes took place. Some changes, such as the Islamization of the Mongols, were of a permanent nature. Others, such as fiscal reforms, were ephemeral and did not take root among Ghazan's successors.
jizya or head-tax on non-Muslims, something Ghazan had tried but was obliged to discontinue (221). The sources report that even month-old children were registered for payment of the jizya (222). Furthermore, Christians were now required to wear identifying patches of blue or black material on their clothing (223). [140] Needless to say, such unenlightened policies did indeed create a new class of domestic enemies at a time when the Il-Khanid state could hardly afford it.

A Brief History of Medieval Russia [From William Richard Morfill, History of Russia , in Willaim Richard Morfill and Charles Edmound Frye, Russia and Poland Turning again to the map for the internal features of the country, it will be seen that, aside from the absence of hills and a " natural " frontier, aside from the vast extent of plain, the most striking thing is a system of rivers, which, with their tributaries, form a complicated network, and allow an easy and almost continuous means of passage throughout the entire country. Toward the middle of the ninth century the resistance began to weaken, owing perhaps to internal dissension. At last in the year 862, a Norse chief, with his followers, was " invited " to assume the duties of government. His name was Rurik, of the tribe of Russ, and he took up his station in the city of Novgorod. He is the legendary founder of the long line of princes, the Rurikovitches, who governed Russia until the accession of the Romanovs in the seventeenth century. Eventually the two were brought into conflict. The time came vhen the succession to the dignity of grand prince fell to the Prince of Suzdal. Rather than take up his residence in Kiev, the new grand prince preferred to remain in his own principality on the Volga. This defiance of all tradition was nowhere more resented than in Kiev itself. It required an army from the north to bring the " Mother City " to terms. Henceforth the title of grand prince, no longer associated with Kiev, begins to lose its old meaning. It is even assumed by two or three princes at a time, indicating a still greater degree of political chaos, which the stern conditions of life on the Volga did little either to soften or to simplify.

Much of the 250 years following the explusion of the Yüan would be spent in warfare among the different groups of Mongols, as various Khans jousted for power and influence, both on the steppe and with the Ming. This period of Mongolian history is vividly described by the socialist texts as "the period of feudal disintegration". We will skip over much of this period in silence. The first person we must take account of is the near-mythical Manduhai Tsetsen Hatan (Manduhai the Wise Queen). As we shall see in later chapters, she is usually mentioned for her role in ensuring Batmönh Dayan Khan's success. Grousset notes of her and her background: Grand Khan Mandaghol, Chinggis Khaan's twenty-seventh successor, died in 1467 as the result of a war against his great-nephew and heir Bolkho

The writing of history in the Middle Ages is a topic of general interest to all medievalists; and it is a topic that has a strong national tradition within Scandinavia and also is in focus internationally. Crusading history and crusading ideology is a research area that has seen an immense growth internationally within the latest thirty years and is now increasingly becoming incorporated into Scandinavian medieval history, and the Danish Research Council for the Humanities has supported a three year project on Denmark and the crusading movement (1998-2001). It is the aim of this course to focus on medieval history writing mainly - but not exclusively - in a crusading context. It is also the aim to invite historians from Scandinavian universities to participate in a discussion about the future of research training in medieval history within the small research milieus that exist in Scandinavia.

Back to Hungary National Security Before the Magyar tribes conquered the Carpathian Basin in 896, they lived a seminomadic life on the Russian steppe (see Early History , ch. 1). Their military organization and weaponry resembled those of various Bulgar-Turkish tribes who also inhabited the steppe at that time. Riding on swift steppe ponies, the Magyar horsemen used recurved bows for battle at long distance, and they used sabers, short lances, axes, and clubs for hand-to-hand combat. In the ninth century, Arab historians wrote that the Magyars could muster 20,000 horsemen for battle. In the mid- to late ninth century, the Magyar tribes inhabited the territory lying to the north of the Black Sea between the lower Don and lower Dnepr rivers. From there they made armed forays against kingdoms to the west, first against the Bulgars on the lower Danube in 839 and then in 862 against Pannonia (see Glossary), which at that time was part of the eastern Frankish Kingdom.

History was one of the founding departments of the university when Keele opened in 1950. Many of the early lecturers came from Oxford University and the History syllabus was based on Oxford's. Basically, our students studied English History to 1558, British History since 1558 plus a period of European History. In the final year students studied a Special Subject. Examination was solely by written exams, all taken at the end of the Final Year, known as Finals. And of course then as now History was taken with another Principal Subject. Click on picture below of our first graduates to see full image In 1970 we introduced what was for us a revolutionary idea of a Final Year History Dissertation, a research project based on a student's Special Subject. (It was only later we discovered Tout had introduced the idea at Manchester c.1900.) It introduced the idea that undergraduates could do research. It remains a distinctive and valued part of our offering to this day. Finals then consisted of four papers and a dissertation.
