By Joel John Barlow History of Lanna - Ancient Immigrations Index Next
For over a 1000 years, until about 500 years ago, T'ai people spread across continental Southeast Asia and much of China. A point of origin, or genetic distinction from indigenous locals, isn't clear. There's little likelihood of any mass migration of T'ai people ever occurring: instead, it seems that a thin movement of skilled T'ai warriors rallying from defeat at the hands of wheat-noodle eating Han Chinese pushing south and west, offered protection to vulnerable country folk, then seized power in strategic places. They built fortifications near existing villages, defending the locals from other warriors similarly bent on becoming protectorsc
As early as 1300 BC T'ai people had firmly established cultural traditions, well adapted to the tropical Southeast Asian climate. They grew rice, kept buffalo, pigs and chickens, wove, made pottery and used distinctive bronze utensils. They were clearly distinct from Han Chinese and Kinh (Kao) Vietnamese. T'ai tribes remain in the mountains of northwest Vietnam today, but some, perhaps many, migrated inland and then further south. This was likely due to population pressure and Chinese invasions. Records of T'ais in southwestern China (Yunnan) begin in the 6th century BC - referring to them as "the barbarians to the south." In 566AD the Emperor Wuti built a wall to defend against the T'ai at the western end of his territory.
The T'ai/Lao and Leu/Lawa who preceded them were more relaxed, unafraid, self-assured, and unneedful of centralization. Until the advent of Gengis Khan's Mongol hordes, that is.

The Vladimir History Guide
Vladimir is one of the cities that played the major role in the emergence of the Russian state. The history of the city goes back over one thousand years.
The town was founded in the 990s by Prince Vladimir, the Baptizer of Russia, on the bank of the Klyazma which was a full-flowing river at that time. In the middle of the 12th century, during Andrei Bogolyubsky's reign, the town became the centre of North-eastern Russia, and during the period of the Mongol invasion Vladimir became the new Russian capital.
The history of the city has much in common with that of Kiev, and even the most impressive view of the city from beyond the Klyazma bears a slight resemblance to the view of Kiev over the Dnieper . Vladimir owed its rise and period of glory in the second half of the 12th century to its prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. He transformed the town into a large fortress with several beautiful gates: the Golden, the Silver, the Copper, the Volga gates and some others. A general picture of the city layout was rather picturesque, with its streets, squares, gardens and monasteries.
Not far from the city of Vladimir, where the Nerl flows into the Klyazma, there is the former residence of Andrei Bogolyubsky with the world renowned Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, which is considered to be one of the most poetic masterpieces of Russian architecture. The Cathedrals of the Assumption and of Saint Demetrios were erected in the city of Vladimir. Their whitestone walls were covered by luxurious carved adornments

History of Korea
The Hermit Kingdom [ In the Beginning ] The migration of Neolithic nomads from central Asia and Siberia led to the gradual emergence of villages and small communities in Manchuria, China and Korea. Sedentary nomadic clans established agricultural settlements that later evolved into the first walled-town tribal states which set the mold for future social evolution on the Korean peninsula. Developments in China during the Warring States Period led to a buildup of tensions among China, Manchuria, and Korea's emerging tribal states.
[ Tales of Three Kingdoms ] Alliances among Korea's tribal states gave rise to the kingdoms of Puyo and Koguryo. China conquered the Liao-tung River basin and northern Korea to protect its northeastern frontier from the increasingly powerful northern steppe nomads. After the fall of the Chinese Wei Kingdom, Hsiung-nu nomads took control of northern China and the Liao-tung region. Manchurian Hsien-pei tribes destroyed the northern kingdom of Puyo and battled Koguryo for control of Liao-tung region. Refugees from Puyo later formed the southern Korean kingdom of Paekche. The Kingdom of Silla emerged as a major aristocratic power in southeastern Korea. The Japanese kingdom of Yamato emerged as diplomatic relations developed among Korea's Three Kingdoms and China.

The invention of the Viking Long ship changed the way in which the Vikings lived. These fierce warriors could now make the jump to Scotland, England and beyond. The Monks of Lindisfarne in England, were the first to be hit by a Viking invasion in June 793 A.D. The monks were killed and the monastery pillaged and burned. The Viking warrior was armed with a knife a sword and a battle axe. The men were experts with all three weapons. The battle axe was feared by their foe. The Vikings would throw these axes with deadly accuracy. Europe is riddled by rivers in which the Vikings could navigate. The

TKD and Korean Martial Arts, February- March 2002
The will to survive is inherent in all living creatures. From time immemorial, humans have had to fight to survive, and when we look honestly at the world today, circumstances have not changed to any great degree. One has only to pick up a newspaper or listen to a news bulletin on the radio or television to become aware of yet another atrocity of one sort or another. Although as individuals, generally speaking, we have no great control over the events that occur on a global scale, we can, to a certain degree, influence the destinies of our own lives. Therefore, to some it is a matter of great importance whether we allow ourselves, or our fellow human beings, to be robbed, attacked, mutilated, or even killed, without trying to do something to prevent this violation of our peaceful existence. It was probably this view which compelled the ancient masters of the Korean martial arts to devise sophisticated systems of self-protection. Moreover these systems were effused with a philosophical, ethical and spiritual framework that helped ensure they would not be used for retaliation, coercion or aggression. Great care was taken that these physical, mental and spiritual techniques were developed, controlled and transmitted from one generation to the next with almost military precision. This ensured that only those who were worthy might learn the secrets of the masters.

Font Size: - Large Small The Mongol conquest of China came in a series of stages. The Western Xia kingdom in the north-west was attacked between 1205 and 1209 and the Jin Empire of North China was first overrun between 1211 and 1215. The Mongols then turned westwards and seized the Western Liao Empire, the state founded by the remnants of the Qidan. After a pause the Mongol attack was resumed, the Jin Empire was destroyed in 1234, the remains of the Nanzhao kingdom in the south-west fell in 1253. Korea was conquered by 1258. The Yuan dynasty was established in 1272 and the Southern Song capitulated in 1279. Genghis Khan and the conquest of North China In the twelfth century the people who are known historically as the Mongols lived in separate tribes on the steppes of central Asia. Their economy was based on herding cattle, hunting and the fact that they were expert horsemen. They were frequently in conflict with their neighbors, the Tartars and this was encouraged by the Jin, who wished to ensure that there was dissension on the steppes as a means of keeping themselves free of oppression.

HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... The Boxer Rebellion Dynasty From at least 1766 BC to this century, China was ruled by dynasties. A dynasty is a ruling family that passes control from one generation to the next. One dynasty lasted more than 800 years, while another lasted only fifteen years. The Chinese people supported their rulers because of what they called the Mandate of Heaven. The ancient Chinese believed their ancestors in heaven had chosen their leaders. The people would rebel against a weak leader because they believed he had lost the Mandate of Heaven. The Shang was the first dynasty to leave written records. The Shang rulers expanded the borders of their kingdom to include all of the land between Mongolia and the Pacific Ocean. The Shang practiced human sacrifice. If a king died, many of his slaves would join him in the grave. Some were beheaded first, others were buried alive. The Shang also developed a lunar calendar consisting of twelve months of 30 days each. When a Shang king died, his next oldest brother replaced him. When there were no brothers, the oldest maternal nephew became king. The Chou were nomads who lived west of the Shang. They overthrew the Shang and ruled China from 1122

is one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations , with written records dating back at least 3,500 years, and with 5,000 years being commonly used by Chinese as the age of their civilization. Successive dynasties developed systems of bureaucratic control, which gave the agrarian -based Chinese an advantage over neighboring nomadic and mountain-dwelling cultures. The forced imposition of a common system of writing by the Qin emperor ( 200 BC ) and the development of a state ideology based on Confucianism 100 BC ) strengthened the Chinese civilization. Politically, China alternated between periods of political union and disunion, and was occasionally conquered by external ethnicities, of which many were eventually assimilated into the Chinese identity. These cultural and political influences from many parts of Asia as well as successive waves of immigration and emigration merged to create the familiar image of Chinese culture and people today.

    Chinese Dynasties
The Chinese were ruled by various dynasties. A dynasty is a time period that is ruled by a specific family. When a new dynasty was to come into power it would overthrow the existing dynasty. Chinese civilization, as described in mythology, begins with Pangu - sometimes spelled Bangu - the creator of the universe, and a succession of legendary sage-emperors and culture heroes (among them are Huang Di , Yao, and Shun) who taught the ancient Chinese to communicate and to find sustenance, clothing, and shelter. XIA DYNASTY: 2000 - 1500 BC The first prehistoric dynasty is said to be Xia, from about the twenty-first to the sixteenth century B.C. Until scientific excavations were made at early bronze-age sites at Anyang , Henan Province, in 1928, it was difficult to separate myth from reality in regard to the Xia. But since then, and especially in the 1960s and 1970s, archaeologists have uncovered urban sites, bronze implements, and tombs that point to the existence of Xia civilization in the same locations cited in ancient Chinese historical texts. At minimum, the Xia period marked an evolutionary stage between the late neolithic cultures and the typical Chinese urban civilization of the Shang dynasty. SHANG DYNASTY: 1700 - 1027 BC Thousands of archaeological finds in the Huang He, Henan Valley - the apparent cradle of Chinese civilizationprovide evidence about the Shang dynasty, which endured roughly from 1700 to 1027 B.C. The Shang dynasty (also called the Yin dynasty in its later stages) is believed to have been founded by a rebel leader who overthrew the last Xia ruler. Its civilization was based on agriculture, augmented by hunting and animal husbandry. Two important events of the period were the development of a writing system, as revealed in archaic Chinese inscriptions found on tortoise shells and flat cattle bones (commonly called oracle bones), and the use of bronze metallurgy. A number of ceremonial bronze vessels with inscriptions date from the Shang period; the workmanship on the bronzes attests to a high level of civilization.
