Dinosaurs Like You've Never Seen Before! Fighting Dinosaurs: New Discoveries from Mongolia features more than 30 of the best preserved and scientifically important dinosaur and other ancient animal fossils ever discovered in Mongolia's famed Gobi Desert. On view through October 29, 2000 Velociraptor that was apparently buried alive while attacking a plant-eating, shield-headed Protoceratops Also featured are many new specimens from Mongolia, including a number of species yet to be named, some of the most complete meat-eating theropod dinosaurs ever found, several nesting dinosaurs, and some of the finest lizard and mammal fossils ever discovered. These specimens have enhanced our understanding of life in the Gobi region 80 million years ago, and they shed new light on the rise of modern bird and mammal groups. This exhibition showcases discoveries and research by Museum and Mongolian Academy of Sciences paleontologists over the last 10 years, and reflects the most current thinking on dinosaur traits, behavior, and evolutionary links to birds. Discoveries in China from just two years ago reveal that a number of dinosaur species had feathers; among the highlights of the exhibition are fully feathered models of Velociraptor (shown above) and a nesting Oviraptor protecting its eggs.

Back to Main The Mongolian National Museum was first established in 1924 with the aim of introducing the history, culture, and natural environment of Mongolia to its visitors. From 1940 to 1941, the museum was known as the Museum of Local Research and then from 1956 to 1991 as the State central Museum. The State Central Museum moved into its own building in 1956, with galleries for history, natural environment, paleontology, and Mongolian art. In 1964, the History Gallery was enriched by new exhibits of ethnography. The National Museum of Mongolian History In May 1991, the State Committee of Culture and Art decided to improve the museums throughout the country and it established the National Museum of Mongolian History by merging the historical collections from the State Central Museum with the Museum of the Revolution, which had been founded in 1971. The National Museum of Mongolian History is now located in the facility built for the Museum of the Revolution. The Memorial Museum of the Victims of Political Repression (also in Ulaanbaatar) is a branch museum of the National Museum of Mongolian History. The National Museum of Mongolian History is a cultural, scientific, and educational organization that presents Mongolian history and culture from the dawn of humanity to the present day. The museum has been implementing different projects related to museum research work in cooperation with foreign and domestic museums as well as scientific organizations. In the last ten years, it has organized exhibitions in Germany, Japan, the U.S.A., Korea, Italy, Norway, China, and the Netherlands.

Inner Eurasia from Prehistory to the Mongol Empire
by Professor David Christian of Macquarie University
Published by Blackwell, 1998
472 pages, with 21 plates, 17 figures, 23 maps, and 9 tables
In this excellent survey of the history of Inner Eurasia, covering the entire period up to and including the 13th century, David Christian explores the political, social, and economic development of many nations and peoples. The author presents Inner Eurasia as a coherent region with an underlying unity in geography and history despite its cultural and ecological variety. Various sections investigate the Scythians, Hsiung-nu, Avars, Bulgars, Khazars, Kievan Rus', Saljuks, and other civilizations. The sections are written in an objective style, utilizing a variety of source documents and secondary sources. There are many quotes from historical documents by Greek, Chinese, Armenian, and other writers. The text itself is easy to understand and well-reasoned, incorporating recent research from the 1980s and 1990s. The footnotes and bibliography are comprehensive and useful. Also valuable are the numerous illustrations and maps in the book. Without a doubt, this is the most important guide to the history and culture of Inner Eurasia that has been published in recent years.

Introduction to the tsam dance and the nadaam sports event.
http://www.indiana.edu/~mongsoc/mong/naadam.htm
INTRODUCTION TO FESTIVALS AND GAMES OF MONGOLIA
By Ts. Ayush "TSAM"- RELIGIOUS MASK DANCE Tsam is a mystery play based on Buddhist mythology. In ancient times Tsam were performed in big monasteries. This art of dance is almost forgotten now. Tsam originated in ancient India, and was brought to Tibet a thousand years ago by the divine Padmasambhava, renowned for his victories over demons and spirits. In the 16th century it spread to Mongolia. In Mongolia Tsam was enriched with elements of witchcraft and the pagan traditions of the nomads. The mystery play formed part of the local Buddhists' cult rites. The Tsam masks depicted the main Buddhist deities which numbered several dozens. During the 19th century, numerous monasteries were built in the country and magnificent Tsam performances were staged there. One performance a year was given at each of the 700 major monasteries. The last one was performed in the late thirties in the square in front of the Choijin-lama's monastery in Ulaanbaatar. There were three types of Tsam: the first presents episodes from the life of Milaraiba, a famous Indian hermit poet of the 1lth century, the second is about Khan Gessar, the folk hero, and the third, Erlik Tsam is about the struggle between good and evil.

    3, Haram gui (Feeling Generous)
I find it fortunate to be born.
    Wisdom, care and generosity,
gifts to me from my parents,
are much valued qualities that help me
to overcome the hardships of life.
    Out in the Steppes
I sit and take in the wonders of this world.
I recall encounters and times of joy in my life.
These, my stories and songs, I want to share with you. Under the gentle moonlight I look at the world surrounding me. I feel relieved, at ease. And I wish all the best to you, too.
    4, Taivshiral (Ease)
If my voice is the twin of the sun and my melody runs with the moonlight, they could join with the smiles of the stars and the universe would be at ease like never before. I offer these songs from my heart to my fellow human beings, hurrying and worrying in the bustle of this world. To put smiles to their teary faces, To make the world a more peaceful place.
    9, Beleg (The Gift)
