Adventures in Mongolia Suprisingly, there are few information technology initiatives in foreign-aide that I've been able to find. For American citizens, the Peace Corps does have a limited IT Focus Area in their application pool. Perhaps more intriguing, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) manage a UNITeS Program for professionally adept information technologists. If you're interested, I can say it's an experience of a lifetime with friendships that will last forever.

Background:
Long a province of China, Mongolia won its independence in 1921 with Soviet backing. A communist regime was installed in 1924. During the early 1990s, the ex-communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) gradually yielded its monopoly on power. In 1996, the Democratic Union Coalition (DUC) defeated the MPRP in a national election. Over the next four years the Coalition implemented a number of key reforms to modernize the economy and institutionalize democratic reforms. However, the former communists were a strong opposition that stalled additional reforms and made implementation difficult. In 2000, the MPRP won 72 of the 76 seats in Parliament and completely reshuffled the government. While it continues many of the reform policies, the MPRP is focusing on social welfare and public order priorities.

Geography
The Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region extends across the north frontier of China, covering 1.183 million square km, adjoining Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces in the east, and Hebei, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces in the south, Ningxia and Gansu to its west and bordering on the Republic of Mongolia and the Federation of Russia to the north. The bordering line extends 4221 km long. The topography of Inner Mongolia is mainly composed of plateaus, extending 3000 km from northeast to southwest, and most of them are more than 1000 meters above sea level. In the region, the area of grassland is 880,000 square km, or accounting for 21.7 percent of the nation's total, the leading of China's five largest grasslands. From east to west, are scattered grassy marshland, typical grassland, wilderness grassland, grassy wilderness, and desert as well as hilly grassy marshlands, low wet and grassy marshland, and marshy grassland, distributed randomly anywhere. In the east, there are boundless primitive forests in the Greater Xinggan (or Hinggan) Mountain Range, and in the west, there is a large area of desert centering on the Ordos Plateau. The extended areas from the plateaus are plains mainly formed by the reaches of the Yellow River and the Liaohe River, known as the Hetao area and Liao-Nen area.

Par for the course? 11,880, if you're golfing Mongolia
By James Brooke
NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE July 4, 2004 Then, with a powerful whirl and a satisfying smack, he sent the little white ball soaring far into the clear blue Mongolian sky. "I feel good about that shot," Tolme said, intently tracking the ball until it disappeared from view. "You could just hit the ball forever here." In a sense, he is. This summer, Tolme, 35, a civil engineer from New Hampshire, is golfing across Mongolia. Treating the enormous Central Asian nation as one course, he has divided Mongolia into 18 holes. The total fairway distance is more than 2.3 million yards. Par is 11,880 strokes. "You hit the ball, then you go and find it," Tolme said, explaining his technique in a land without fences, a nation twice the size of Texas. "Then you hit it again. And again. And again." With his caddy, Khatanbaatar, carrying water, food and a tent in a Russian jeep, Tolme teed off May 28 and calculates that he will finish his game in the trading center of Dund-Us, also known as Khovd, sometime around the end of July.

Mongolian Geography
Mongolia is a landlocked country located in Northeastern Asia between China and Russia. Most famous for its extensive Gobi dessert (gobi is a Mongolian term for arid lands that can support camels but not small mammals and is distinguished from real desert which cannot support even camels.), Mongolia actually has a terrain consisting of mountains and hills in the west and north, sloping gradually down to plains and low lands in the east and south. In addition to the large Gobi areas, the country has one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes (Hovsgol Nuur) as well as salt lakes, marshes, sand dunes, rolling grasslands, alpine forests and permanent glaciers in the mountain areas. The three mountain ranges in Mongolia include the Altai Mountains, stretching across the western and southwestern regions of the country and bordering on China, Russia and Kazakhstan, the Hangayn Nuruu in central and north central Mongolia and the Hentiyn Nuruu near the Russian border to the northeast of the capital, Ulan Bator. The eastern part of the country consists of a large plain with grasslands reaching from the Gobi to the northeast frontier with Russia; much of this land borders the Chinese autonomous regions of Inner Mongolia. While Mongolia has several major rivers, they are concentrated in the mountainous regions; the few rivers in the south and eastern portions of the country often run into the dessert and disappear. The exceptions are rivers in the north east which drain into the Heilong Jiang (Amur River).

Arrive in Beijing

Arrive in Beijing, China.
Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China. While many of its elements are common to other Chinese cities, the sum of this city—its scope and presence in history—has no equivalent in China or anywhere else in the world.
Beijing is not only the political and administrative center of the People’s Republic of China, it is also China’s single greatest repository of monuments and treasures from the imperial era. It is also the second-largest and fastest growing municipality in today’s China, the home and workplace of 9.3 million people. The city proper extends over 16800 km² (6,486 sq miles). It is divided into 10 districts (including 4 urban districts) and 9 counties.

Today we fly from Beijing to Ulan Bataar and transfer to our hotel.
Ulan Bataar, Mongolia's capital, has the look and feel of a neglected 1950s European city. The old Soviet cars and buses have been replaced by newer Japanese versions.
