About Mongolia
Mongolia remains one of the last great adventure destinations in Asia. Located between China and Russia, it is three times the size of France, yet with a population of only 2.6 million, is one of the most sparsely inhabited countries in the world. It is also one of the highest countries in the world with an average elevation of 1580 metres - the highest peak, Tavanbogd Uul, at 4374 metres, has a magnificent glacier that towers over Mongolia, Russia and China. Between the peaks lay austere deserts, but elsewhere Mongolia has numerous saltwater and freshwater lakes, the largest of which is Lake Hovsgol . The Mongolian climate is extreme with long sub-arctic winters. But, with over 260 sunny days a year, it is also known as the 'Land of the Blue Sky'. With a complex, colourful history and from a vast empire during the period of Mongol conquest under Chinggis (Genghis) and Kublai Khan, Mongolia, formerly known as Outer Mongolia (Inner Mongolia is governed by China), is now an independent democratic nation.

Allsen 153 pages In the thirteenth century the Mongols created a vast, transcontinental empire that intensified commercial and cultural contact throughout Eurasia. From the outset of their expansion, the Mongols identified and mobilized artisans of diverse backgrounds, frequently transporting them from one cultural zone to another. Prominent among those transported were Muslim textile workers, resettled in China, where they made clothes for the imperial court. In a meticulous and fascinating account, the author investigates the significance of cloth and colour in the political and cultural life of the Mongols. Situated within the broader context of the history of the Silk Road, the primary line in East-West cultural communication during the pre-Muslim era, the study promises to be of interest not only to historians of the Middle East and Asia, but also to art historians and textile specialists

The Mongol Khans and their Empire The Adventures of Ibn Battuta: A Muslim Traveller of the 14th Century by Ross E. Dunn
University of California Press, 1990; ISBN: 0520067436

This is not a translation of the writings of Ibn Battuta (an important primary source) but rather a good and highly readable synthesis of his 24 years of travel. While predominantly a vision of the many cultures of the Islamic world of the fourteenth century, Dunn also details Battuta's travels in the steppe lands of southern Russia and in Yuan dynasty China. Ceremony Seeks To Promote Greater Understanding And Appreciation of Mongolian Culture
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined Mongolian Ambassador Jargalsaikhany Enkhsaikhan, Permanent Representative to the United Nations; Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern; Cultural Affairs Commissioner Schuyler G. Chapin; and Commissioner for the United Nations, Consular Corps and Protocol Irene R. Halligan at a ceremony in City Hall Park during which the City of New York was presented with gifts symbolic of Mongolia's rich cultural heritage. Ambassador Enkhsaikhan presented the Mayor with a "Ger," a round portable nomadic home, and a traditional robe called a "Del," along with a hat. Today's ceremony concludes this year's two-month-long Festival of Mongolia, a series of events that included a two-day celebration in Central Park on June 23rd and 24th. "I am delighted to accept the Ger and the Del on behalf of the people of the City of New York," Mayor Giuliani said. "These two items are not only symbolic of the centuries-old tradition associated with the rich nomadic lifestyle of the Mongolian people, but are still in use to this day. I believe that it is very important that we, as leaders, find ways to promote and celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of our two great cultures. By doing so, we help to establish a better understanding and appreciation for each other."

General Questions Questions About Mongolia Why would I want to visit Mongolia? About Mongolia section Top of Page
Is Mongolia safe?
Based on their history, one might expect modern Mongolians to be aggressive and unfriendly to outsiders and strangers. Nothing could be further from the truth. The same harsh conditions that make nomadic existence so precarious and challenging have dictated the need for uncommon hospitality and warmth extended to all travelers and pilgrims encountered in one's own vicinity. It is firmly implanted into every Mongolian's beliefs, whether he or she is a city dweller or herder, that the courtesy extended today to a stranger will be repaid in the future when the situation is reversed, and that the welcome offered to a visitor into one's home is the same that you can expect when you are the guest. This is the basis for Mongolian civilization and the cornerstone of Mongolian culture that is intertwined throughout its institutions and customs. Of course, there are inherent dangers in travel to any destination, and particularly a remote country like Mongolia. Please ask us if you have any questions about trip itineraries or scheduled activities.

Aid Buddhism in Mongolia - Projects
Projects
While the Buddhism in Mongolia programme is, for largely administrative purposes, composed of a number of mostly small individual projects, each of these falls in to one of the five broadly defined categories that form the framework of the Programme, reflecting the most pressing challenges that face Mongolian Buddhists.
Traditional Buddhist Education
The majority of the programme portfolio is made up of projects that focus on education as a means of assisting the revival of Buddhism. By educating young Mongolians, mainly monks and nuns, we are contributing towards the development of a monastic and lay community that can return Buddhism to its rightful place at the heart of Mongolian culture in generations to come. This key aspect of the programme includes Education Exchanges Buddhist Education in Mongolian and Improving Tibetan Studies
Traditional Medicine
Buddhism in Mongolia is working with the School of Traditional Medicine in the National Medical University of Mongolia to strengthen understanding of the Buddhist foundation of traditional Mongolian medical practice. The School, established in 1989, trains doctors in the theory and clinical practice of traditional Buddhist medicine. The head of the school, Professor Tumurbaatar, requested support from the Foundation to help him "put Buddhism back in to the heart of traditional medicine." With funds from the programme, the School is currently producing a series of four medical textbooks in modern Mongolian language that will greatly assist in the re-establishment of traditional Mongolia medical practice.

Changing Perceptions of Genghis Khan in Mongolia An Interview with Dr. Ts. Tsetsenbileg
By Yuan Wang HARVARD ASIA PACIFIC REVIEW: You have done extensive research on the importance and prevalence of Ghenghis Khan in modern Mongolian society, a figure whose heyday ended well over 700 years ago. With that in mind, why did you become interested in pursuing this vein of research? DR. TSETSENBILEG: HAPR: Why would it be important to know the historical or the human angle from which most Mongolians view Ghenghis Khan? TT: HAPR: So what have you concluded from your research? TT: HAPR: Where did you find the most compelling evidence for your conclusions on the modern perceptions of Ghenghis Khan in Mongolia? 80. Mongolia - Buddhism
Monasteries were built across mongolia, often sited at the juncture of trade and the shamans to the religious and cultural fringes of mongolian culture.
http://countrystudies.us/mongolia/47.htm
Buddhism
Mongolia Table of Contents In Tibet Buddhism thus became an amalgam, combining colorful popular ceremonies and curing rituals for the masses with the study of esoteric doctrine for the monastic elite. The Yellow Sect, in contrast to competing sects, stressed monastic discipline and the use of logic and formal debates as aids to enlightenment. The basic Buddhist tenet of reincarnation was combined with the Tantric idea that buddhahood could be achieved within a person's lifetime to produce a category of leaders who were considered to have achieved buddhahood and to be the reincarnations of previous leaders. These leaders, referred to as incarnate or living buddhas, held secular power and supervised a body of ordinary monks, or lamas (from a Tibetan title bla-ma , meaning "the revered one)". The monks were supported by the laity, who thereby gained merit and who received from the monks instructions in the rudiments of the faith and monastic services in healing, divination, and funerals. Buddhism and the Buddhist monkhood always have played significant political roles in Central and Southeast Asia, and the Buddhist church in Mongolia was no exception. Church and state supported each other, and the doctrine of reincarnation made it possible for the reincarnations of living buddhas to be discovered conveniently in the families of powerful Mongol nobles.
