Children and Money Series
Allowances and Alternatives
Sharon M. Danes Everyone has attitudes and feelings about money which are based upon observations and experiences of childhood. How money was handled in a your family when you were a child will greatly affect how you handle money with your children. Because of these different attitudes about money, conflicts often arise between parents when money topics such as allowances are discussed. It is very important for parents to use a consistent approach to giving their children money and to teaching them about earning, spending, sharing, saving, and borrowing money. While this publication explains the ways children receive money, more general information is presented in Teaching Children Money Habits For Life listed in the reference section. There is no right or wrong way to provide children with money. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. Because each family's financial situation is different, choosing a method or combination of methods is a family decision. This publication talks about the pros and cons of each method and ways to make any method work for your family.
Developing A Consistent Parental Approach
Before any decisions are made about how or if children should receive money, each parent should identify and discuss his/her own attitudes about money. Parents should ask themselves the following questions as the basis for discussion. That discussion will eventually lead to a mutual view about money and their children. Parents will then be prepared to include children in the decision-making process.

Share-Save-Spend: Can Hello Kitty Teach Money Management Skills?
POSTED: 9:30 am EDT October 18, 2004 UPDATED: 9:57 am EDT October 18, 2004 Money can be a very tough subject for you and your kids, but you're probably doing something right if you're talking about it with them at all. Nathan Dungan can help you start your kids on the right track. Dungan is an author, award-winning speaker and national expert on family finances and the effects of mass marketing on young people. A top-performing financial adviser and vice president of marketing for a Fortune 500 financial services company, he founded Share-Save-Spend LLC, an organization that helps people of all ages develop and maintain healthy financial habits. Dungan offers insight drawn from his highly successful Share-Save-Spend approach to money. "Having a balanced approach to financial matters means aligning what you care about with how you use your money. While this sounds simple enough, it becomes seriously complicated by the compounding pressure on young people to spend, spend, spend, and to reach for an upscale lifestyle," Dungan said. Dungan offers a Share-Save-Spend tip, a question to prompt money discussions with your children, and a gotta-have-it-now fact that illustrates the incredible influence mass marketing has on our children.

PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release September 20, 2004
FEDERAL BANKRUPTCY OFFICIALS TEACH MONEY MANAGEMENT BASICS TO WEST BLOOMFIELD STUDENTS
DETROIT-Federal officials who supervise the bankruptcy system will kick off a volunteer program to provide financial literacy education to high school and college students on September 22, 2004, at West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, MI, at 10:00 a.m.
Lawrence A. Friedman, Director of the Executive Office for United States Trustees, and the Honorable John C. Ninfo II, Chief Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of New York, will draw on their years of experience in the bankruptcy system to teach West Bloomfield students the basics of personal money management in a 45-minute session.
"Each year, more than one out of every 70 households in the United States enters bankruptcy," Friedman stated. "Basic financial education can help consumers protect their future by enabling them to avoid stressful debt and possible bankruptcy. Judge Ninfo and I want to help students learn the principles of money management. Students in particular should understand that new technologies, which serve to reduce our use of cash and to increase our use of plastic and other convenient means of purchasing, require new skills in personal restraint and financial planning. We are grateful to Eugene Seaborn III, West Bloomfield High School Principal, and Dr. JoAnn Andrees, West Bloomfield School District Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, for inviting us to West Bloomfield High School."

Heir-Raising Lessons BY EILEEN AND JON GALLO Teach your children the value of money. Lesson One
Lesson Two

Lesson Three
"How much money does it take to ruin a child?" Eileen was asked this question several times during a multiyear study of family wealth she conducted for her doctoral dissertation in psychology. The answer is the subject of our book Silver Spoon Kids: How Successful Parents Raise Responsible Children . We found that money does not have to ruin your child. But raising responsible children in an affluent environment does not happen by chance; it takes intentional parenting. In the workshops we offer based on Silver Spoon Kids [Eileen is a psychotherapist and Jon an estate-planning attorney], we like to quote our friend Jilliene Schenkel, who also counsels families about the intergenerational transfer of wealth. Jilliene uses a red Corvette analogy when she discusses children and money. If you give your teenager a red Corvette for his sixteenth birthday but don't bother with driving lessons, why would you be shocked when he gets into an accident? Many of the affluent families we have worked with over the years treated money like a red Corvette. They gave money to their teenagers or young adults without bothering to provide them with a financial education and then were shocked and disappointed when their children dissipated the money through overspending or poor investments.

My sons and I have been playing CF4Kids for a couple months and I wasn't sure how much was sinking in then... A couple weeks ago I was talking with my brother about a purchase he was getting ready to make when one of my boys spoke up and said that he was purchasing a "big doo dad". My other son then said it seemed like a large purchase and asked him what Passive Income he had to justify such a large purchase. My brother and I just stood there for a moment, dumbfounded that this came out of 10 and 11 year old boys. I am now sure they are getting the financial education they need. Great game and again, thanks. Shelly Browne 01-28-2002 02:28 PM - I enjoy playing the game with my 11 yr. old daughter and her friends. We let the 4 year old play too. I can tell the business-minded kids because they ask to play the game as soon as they come in my doorthey'd rather practice making money than anything else! My daughter bakes and sells homemade bread with flour she grinds fresh so she is interested in learning how to make money. When she was 3, her life goal was to own a mall. I think she might do it!

Financial blogs teach money management
Finance experts show wide audiences their methods for success online
By Neville Medhora Media Credit: Kyohei Yoshioka First year MBA student Manuel Ugas works at the EDS Financial Trading and Technology Center in the McCombs School of Business Tuesday morning. The Center provides students with practical financial training and experience.
This academic year, 15,000 UT students will take out over $180 million in loans. Last spring graduates who took out loans left UT with an average debt of $16,000, in addition to a diploma, according to Henry Urick, the assistant director of Student Financial Services at UT. Dealing with tough money decisions in college has shown many students the importance of planning for one's financial future. A new method has emerged that allows students to keep track of their financial future and learn a thing or two. It's called blogging.

Summertime Is A Great Time
To Teach Money Skills To Children (June, 2000) With today's labor shortages, there are ample employment opportunities this summer for high school students who want to earn some extra money. If your teenager is taking on a summer job, now is a great time for parents to teach valuable money management lessons, suggests Stacey Roberts, financial counselor with Lutheran Social Service.
Roberts said that the JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy indicates most high school seniors lack basic skills in all aspects of personal finance, including checkbook management and use of credit cards. "While most people learn about money management through trial and error," said Roberts, "it doesn't have to be that way. The sooner children learn about financial responsibility, the better off they will be as they grow older." Roberts suggests that parents follow these steps as they help their children learn how to be wise money managers: Set goals.
