(September 15, 1982) On September 14, 1982, Princess Grace of Monaco died in Monte Carlo of injuries suffered in a car crash the day before. She had been driving her British Rover 3500 on the narrow, twisting roads above Monte Carlo when she suffered a stroke and plunged down a 45-foot embankment. With her in the car was her 17-year-old daughter, Stephanie, who suffered minor injuries. Princess Grace was 52 years old. The American actress-turned-princess was born Grace Kelly in 1929 to a rich Irish-Catholic family in Philadelphia. FRENCH RIVIERA - SIGHTSEEING Sightseeing in the Riviera, Principaute de Monaco: The Principality of Monaco is comprised of three main parts : Monaco (the Rock and Prince's Palace), La Condamine (a bustling shopping area at the foot of the Rock) and Monte-Carlo, the central area around the Casino with the classiest hotels. An independent sovereign state located between the foot of the Southern Alps and the Mediterranean, the Principality of Monaco borders on several French villages: La Turbie, and Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. At the foot of the southern Alps, in the far south-eastern corner of France, bordering the Mediterranean sea, the Principality of Monaco benefits from an exceptionally mild climate which makes it a particularly sought-after destination. Its climate is extraordinarily mild due to the combined influences of the Alps and the Mediterranean, thus making Monaco a place where one can make the most of sea and mountains. Constant exposure to the international community, modernity, and sheer determination have all contributed to the Principality's ability to develop and ensure its independence. The very origins of the Principality illustrate this; over seven centuries the Princes of Monaco have transformed what was once barren land and arid rock into an economic success story.

European Royalty: Monaco
Monaco is a fairy tale like principality located along the south of France on the " Côte d' Azur " near Nices The principality one of the smallest states in Europe. While the principality itself may be small, the history of its ruling family, the Grimaldis, is one of the longest of the ruling families in Europe.
History of Monaco
The Grimadi family's roots are in Italy, but their history has been intertwined with that of Monaco for nearly a millenium. The Grimaldi family seized and then bought the Domain of Monaco from the Genoese in 1308. The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign state of only just under one square mile. It consists of: Monaco, the old town; Monte-Carlo, the new town; La Condamine which links them and Fontvielle the industrial section. Monaco is a rocky peninsula jutting into the blue Mediterranean, Monaco-Ville is the seat of Monaco’s government. Here, guarded by ramparts, narrow streets climb the slope to the Prince’s Palace high above the sea. The oldest part of the Prince’s Palace is 13th-century; the buildings on the south side, in Italian Renaissance style, date from the 15th- and 16th-centuries. Monaco captured the attention of Americans in 1957 when U.S. movie star race Kelly married to Prince Rainier, the present Sovereign.
Origins
The Grimaldi's, one of the most influential Guelf families of Genova, were twice chased away from their city by the Ghibellines. In 1270, they retorted by seizing Ventimiglia, Menton and Roquebrune. After the insurrection of December 1270, the defeated Guelfs retreated to Provence, where Rainier Grimaldi, who was head of the family, began arming his fleet to retaliate.

Monaco, sinds 1191 a possesion of Genoa , becomes in 1297 a feudal posession of the family Grimaldi inside the Republic of Genoa. From time to time is under full control of Genoa. The Genoese protectorate shifts to Spain in 1524. In 1641 it develops into the Principality of Monaco under a protectorate of France . France annexes the principality in 1793 and renames it Fort-Hercule. In 1815 the principality is restored and becomes a protectorate of Sardinia The protectorate shifts to France in 1861. Monaco's sovereignty is recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. From that moment on Monaco can be considered independent. In 1911 the absolute monarchy is replaced by a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. In 1918 a treaty is signed providing for limited French protection over Monaco. The treaty establishes that Monegasque policy is aligned with French political, military and economic interests. The executive is headed by the minister of state, who is a French citizen appointed by the Prince for a 3-year term from among several senior French civil servants proposed by the French Government. Monaco is occupied by Italy between 1942 and 1943 and between 1943 and 1944 by Germany. Femal suffrage is introduced in 1962.

NICE : a History of Visitors
Though the English aristocracy of the mid-19th century somewhat arrogantly like to claim the RIviera for themselves, the majority of the towns along the coast of the Mediterranean have a truly ancient history - and Nice is no exception.
The citizens of Nice trace their city's name back to the Greek Nikaia- City of Victory. Though other accounts say that it was founded by the Marseillais in 350 BC.
Whichever is the closer to truth matters not. Nice has been created and shaped by successive waves of foreigners who occupied the eastern end of the Bay of Angels facing Antibes
Of course, the Romans had their time in Nice (as they did in most of Europe). After their decline and fall, the city became part of Provence until 1388. Then the Savoies of Switzerland and Northern Italy took over.
Promenade des Anglais
came to be built - and named.
After the incorporation of Nice into France, the railway from Marseilles was extended.

The Principality of Monaco is the second-smallest independent state in the world, after Vatican City. It is located on the Mediterranean coast, 18 kilometers (11 mi.) east of Nice, France, and is surrounded on three sides by France. Monaco is divided into four sections: Monaco-Ville, the old city on a rocky promontory extending into the Mediterranean; La Condamine, the section along the port; Monte-Carlo, the principal residential and resort area; and Fontvieille, a newly constructed area reclaimed from the sea.
The principality is noted for its beautiful natural scenery and mild, sunny climate. The average minimum temperature in January and February is 8oC (47oF); in July and August the average maximum temperature is 26oC (78oF).

    A Little History
The Shaky House of Grimaldi Monaco, according to Somerset Maugham, is 149 sunny hectares (370 acres) peopled with shady characters. According to a 1918 treaty, Monaco must maintain an ongoing stream of male heirs to retain its independence from France. The tax-free principality is the oddest fiscal and social anomaly in Europe, a blend of Las Vegas hype and aristocratic glitter whose luster has been sorely tarnished since the demise of Princess Grace ("a snow-covered volcano," said Alfred Hitchcock). The marriage of the world's most eligible bachelor and the Hollywood golden goddess dominated headlines in April 1956. However, like Grace and Rainier themselves, the marriage did not age gracefully. Rainier's snide public assessments of his celebrity wife's accomplishments showed an unpleasant rivalry. In turn, Grace, beneath her cool veneer, was a lonely and frustrated woman who sought solace in a string of affairs. The children of this ill-fated union have rebelled against the strictures imposed on them by their less-than-noble parents. More at home in the watering holes of big-city Paris than in the claustrophobic and judgmental homeland, they take turns being the one most likely to shock the multinational residents of their tax-free domain.

    The Grimaldi Family's Reign
In 1997, the Principality of Monaco celebrates the 700 years reign of the Grimaldi dynasty. It all began on January 8, 1297 when the Guelt Francois Grimaldi dressed as a Franciscan monk, seized the fortress protecting the famous rock and the port of Hercules. Surmounting the trials and tribulations of history and throughout the dark periods of foreign domination, the Principality has managed to affirm its identity and preserved its independence throughout the centuries due to the wise guidance of its Princes. Thus, at the threshold of the third millennium, it will celebrate its commitment and loyalty to the Grimaldi family, its territory and community.
On January 8, 1297, Francois Grimaldi took power of the Monaco fortress. In the book, "Monaco, its Origins and History ", the indisputable authority on Monaco's history, author Gustave Saigne relates the details of this paramout turning point in the history of the Principality : " During the night of January 8, 1297, a monk appeared at the gates of Monaco. Inconspicuously, Francois Grimaldi was let through. Barely having entered the enclosed grounds, the imposture monk threw himself over the guards, apparently few were holding watch, and a full pledged attack was launched as the large Guelf troops, which had been hiding closely behind concealed by the obscurity of the night, forced the gates before the guards could react. " By his actions, Francois Grimaldi forever engraved the family name on the flanks of Monaco's rock. Until that moment, its situation had remained precarious as events of the years preceding 1 297 witnessed:

PRINCESS CAROLINE OF MONACO Royalty Caroline is the eldest child of Monaco's Prince Rainier and his wife Princess Grace , and the sister to Monaco's current head of state, Prince Albert . Caroline inherited her mother's movie-star beauty and early on became a favorite with the European society press. She served as the ceremonial (if unofficial) first lady of Monaco after her mother's untimely death in 1982. Caroline's first husband was French banker and playboy Philippe Junot; they were married in 1978 and divorced in 1980. She then was married to Italian industrialist Stefano Casiraghi from 1983 until his death was in a power-boat racing accident in 1990. In 1999 she married Prince Ernst August of Hanover; their daughter, Alexandra, was born later that year. Her sister Stephanie (b. 1965) is also a favorite of the celebrity press.
Extra credit : Caroline had three children with Stefano Casiraghi: Andrea (b. 1984), Charlotte (b. 1986) and Pierre (b. 1987)... As the eldest male child, Caroline's brother Albert was heir to Prince Rainier. However, Monaco's constitution was changed in 2002 so that if Albert dies without children, the throne will pass to Caroline and then on to her children with Casiraghi.

The prestige and the fame of this attractive territory, landlocked within the French département of Alpes-Maritimes, spread much further than its borders, which the French writer Colette described as being "made of flowers". Its space is limited (195 ha.), but the site is enchanting and unfolds along a narrow coastal strip four kilometres long, bounded by the mountainous foothills of the Tête de Chien and Mount Agel.
The city is made up of four districts: Monaco-Ville, the historical seat of the Principality, situated upon the Rock where the Prince's Palace stands, Monte-Carlo, the district surrounding the Casino, La Condamine, around Port d'Hercule, Fontvieille, the new industrial district, built on ground gained from the Sea (22 ha.). Its history:
In spite of such an exiguous territory, Monaco is a land brimming with History, its origins lost in the mists of time. Since earliest antiquity, men have yielded to the charms of this natural shelter, where abrupt cliffs furrowed with caves once served as refuge for primitive tribes of the prehistoric era. This wind-sheltered enclave, enjoying an exceptionally mild climate, witnessed a succession of conquering civilisations from the Mediterranean Basin.
