History: The history of Monaco is inseparable from that of the House of Grimaldi. Originally of Genoese extraction, the Grimaldis rose to prominence during the 12th century, when one member of the family became ambassador both to the court of the German Emperor Frederick II (Barbarossa) and to that of his Byzantine counterpart, Manuel Commenus. In the late 13th century however, with the Holy Roman Empire rife with internal strife, the Grimaldi family was forced to take refuge in Provence. François Grimaldi led a group of partisans into the fortress of Monaco in 1297, which has been ruled by his family ever since; the Grimaldis have preserved their independence through a mixture of good luck and cunning diplomacy. At various times, they were to be found allied with almost every power in the region, particularly during the Italian Wars in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Monaco’s geographical position left them ideally placed to either help or hinder the repeated and largely unsuccessful attempts by the kings of France to conquer Italy. This Machiavellian approach – indeed, Machiavelli himself was in Monaco in the early 16th century to sign a treaty on behalf of Florence – paid dividends in 1612 when Honoré II was granted the title of prince by the French crown. He signed a treaty of friendship with France, and the principality remained independent from that time on, despite a brief interruption during the French Revolution.

Monaco - Monte Carlo History The Rock of Monaco was a shelter for primitive populations. Traces of their occupation were discovered in a cave in the Saint-Martin Gardens. The first sedentary inhabitants of the region, the Ligures, are described as a mountain people, accustomed to hard work and an exemplary frugality. The coast and the port of Monaco were probably the sea access for the interior Ligurian population, the Oratelli of Peille. The origin of the name "Monaco" has been subject to several hypotheses. For some, the name comes from the Ligurian tribe, the Monoïkos, who inhabited the Rock in the 6th century B.C. For others, the origin comes from the Greek. In antiquity, the port of Monaco was associated with the cult of the hero Herakles (Hercules for the Romans), and his name was often linked to the expression "Herakles Monoïkos," which means Herakles alone. This version seems to bear out, as the modern name for Monaco's main port is the Port of Hercules. At the end of the 12th century B.C., the Romans occupied the region. Monaco is part of the Province of the Maritime Alps. During their occupation, the Romans erected at La Turbie, the Trophy of Augustus, which celebrates the triumph of their military campaigns. During this same period, Phoenecian and Carthaginian sailors brought prosperity to the region. After the fall of the Roman Empire (5th century A.D.), the region was regularly sacked by different barbarian populations. It was only at the end of the X century, after the expulsion of the Sarrasins by the Count of Provence, that the coast slowly became repopulated.

Branch of Monaco
Historical Overview: A Shelter for the Grimaldis
There was a distant time when Monaco was little more than an inhospitable rocky peninsula offering a natural seaport for nearby villages. Since those times, the history of Monaco has become inseparable from that of the Grimaldis, as the enduring principality undoubtedly became the jewel of this ancient sovereign House. Standing high on the Rock , the fortress has sheltered countless sons of the House of Grimaldi — sometimes considered rebels — who in turn have rendered the courtesy by, literally and figuratively, raising their sword in its defense. It is thus said that the Grimaldis hold Monaco "from God and the sword only," and their sovereignty will regularly be recognized by neighboring powers. condominii ). The Grimaldi Family was numerically large and formed an albergo , a Genoese association of patricians similar in essence to today's corporations. Not only this kind of organization allowed the Genoese aristocracy to liberate the means to explore the trading opportunities the world had to offer, from London to Beijing, but those families came also to combine resources within powerful multi-family alliances. The Genoese concept of

The Republic of Genoa: The Roots of the Grimaldi
Genoa had few rivals in the Mediterranean and rarely missed an opportunity to consolidate that position whenever possible. Genoa's power crushed the maritime ambitions of Pisa (1284) and confronted the fleet of its twin rival, Venice, in four wars, which were as brutal as they were inconclusive. Genoa's initial commercial empire stretched to the Western end of the Silk Road and came to spread across most of Europe. Genoese merchants could be seen in the fairs of Italy and France, along the Danube, in the Canary Islands, and across to China, always seeking a business opportunity. Their regular sea routes stretched from the Black Sea to the North Sea, from Caffa and Chios to Bruges and Antwerp.

The Monaco was a C-body car from '65 thru about '76; there was a C-body Royal Monaco also from '75 to '77. There were also B-body Monacos in '77-'78 (rebadged Coronets). (The Eagle Premier-based Monaco in the early '90s was a completely different car. When the Monaco was first introduced in 1965, it was only offered as a 2 door hardtop in the US (Canada had Monaco convertibles as well, but these were never offered in the US). It appears to have been conceived as a specialty hardtop along the lines of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Olds Starfire. This solo offering was the top of the Dodge line in '65; other C-body Dodges following included the Custom 880, Polara 500, and Polara. The Monaco was most readily distinguished from lesser C-body Dodges by its unique taillight treatment, a tradition that continued as long as there were C-body Monacos. The Custom 880 was dropped in '66 and the Monaco line expanded to offer most of the former Custom 880 body styles (all except the convertible and 6-window four door sedan). A Monaco 500 two door hardtop was introduced to take the place of the original Monaco at this time, accompanied again by a

The Principality at the Cote d'Azu has only one commune, Monaco, whose limits are the same as those of the stater.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad linkup to France and the opening of a casino in Monte-Carlo.
On 11 April 1950 Prince Rainier officially became monarch, succeeding his grandfather Prince Louis II. With the marriage to U.S. actress Grace Kelly in 1956, Prince Rainier brought Hollywood glamour to his tiny Mediterranean state and put Monaco on the international stage. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery and gambling facilities have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center and a haven for really rich people.

Founded in 1215 as a colony of Genoa, Monaco has been ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297, except when under French control from 1789 to 1814. Designated as a protectorate of Sardinia from 1815 until 1860 by the Treaty of Vienna, Monaco's sovereignty was recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861. The Prince of Monaco was an absolute ruler until a constitution was promulgated in 1911. The 1907 Catholic Encyclopedia In July 1918, a treaty was signed providing for limited French protection over Monaco. The treaty, formally noted in the Treaty of Versailles, established that Monegasque policy would be aligned with French political, military, and economic interests.
