Molecular biology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Molecular biology is the study of biology at a molecular level. The field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry , particularly genetics and biochemistry . Molecular biology chiefly concerns itself with understanding the interactions between the various systems of a cell, including the interrelationship of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and learning how these interactions are regulated. Writing in Nature , W.T. Astbury described molecular biology as "... not so much a technique as an approach, an approach from the viewpoint of the so-called basic sciences with the leading idea of searching below the large-scale manifestations of classical biology for the corresponding molecular plan. It is concerned particularly with the forms of biological molecules and ..... is predominantly three-dimensional and structural - which does not mean, however, that it is merely a refinement of morphology - it must at the same time inquire into genesis and function"

The BMERC provides research support in both the development and application of computational biology / Bioinformatics methods in biology. This includes a graduate and postdoctoral training program. The Center's research focus is currently on full-genome comparative analyses, protein structure prediction, protein function identification and domain dissection. Our work has led to the formulation and testing of hypotheses in the areas of molecular evolution, gene regulation, developmental genetics, and protein structure-function relationships. The Influenza Sequence Database is a curated database of nucleotide and amino acid sequences. It is intended to provide the research community with easy sequence deposit and retrieval capabilities, together with tools tailored, in particular, to the analysis of hemagglutinin and neuraminidase sequences.
    Notable News and Announcements
    • Four of the ten most cited LANL publications between 1995-1999 , including the most cited article, were contributed by T-10.
    • George Bell, former group leader of T-10 and director of T Division, died May 28, 2000. Bell, a Laboratory Senior Fellow, came to Los Alamos in 1951, joining T Division's effort to design and develop the world's first thermonuclear weapons. Bell later co-founded T-10 and was at the forefront of the human genome project. He is also remembered as a world-class mountaineer.

    Description
Seminars in Cancer Biology is a review journal dedicated to keeping scientists informed of developments in the field of molecular oncology on a topic by topic basis. Each issue is thematic in approach, devoted to an important topic of interest to cancer biologists, from the underlying genetic and molecular causes of cellular transformation and cancer to the molecular basis of potential therapies. Every issue is edited by a guest editor, an internationally acknowledged expert in the field, and contains six to eight authoritative invited reviews on different aspects of the subject area. The aim of each issue is to provide a coordinated, readable, and lively review of a selected area, published rapidly to ensure currency.
Topics covered in earlier issues include:
    ISSN: 1044-579X
    Imprint: ACADEMIC PRESS
Subscription for the year 2006, Volume 16, 6 issues
